The One-Armed Executioner

What is the sound of one hand clapping? You will find out tonight!

The One-Armed Executioner

This week, our feature has been chosen by Michael Malaise! It’s his first selection on the board. Michael, if you are out there, thank you for all of your suggestions.

So what is it about? From EyeAskance on IMDB:

Franco Guerrero stars as Ramon Ortega, hotshot Interpol agent. He’s getting too close to nefarious drug kingpin Edwards (Nigel Hogge), so the master criminal sends out his goons, led by the physically imposing Mike Jason (Pete Cooper). The bad guys subsequently murder Ramon’s lovely blonde wife Ann (Jody Kay) and lop off Ramon’s left arm. Ramon sinks into a pit of despair, self pity, and alcoholism, before being rescued by his associate Wo Chen, who trains him in the martial arts and to be able to operate without the use of a limb.

…And hilarity ensues! One armed Kung Fu! Low, low budget action scenes! Drunken rampages! Utter brutality! Yelling into microphones! No, I am not describing the GlibZoom, but I understand how you might think that.

So watch! Or don’t! Everything is voluntary! Next week I have too many options. I need to narrow it down. I have:

As usual, your input matters! Do you have any preference in the selections above?

*WARNING: This film has not been vetted. If we watch it, we go in blind!

Bonus!

As we move into Year Six of GlibFlick, remember this: We are the Night Crew! There are no rules on Thursdays!

Bonus II, Electric Boogaloo!: The Most Gen X Man in the World.

One armed Kung Fu! Low, low budget action scenes! Drunken rampages! Utter brutality! Yelling into microphones! No, I am not describing the GlibZoom, but I understand how you might think that.

You had me at drunken rampages.

I would have expected mid ’70s based on the soundtrack so far.

    • R.J.

It sounds odd, but 1981 was really still the 70s in most parts of the world.

      • Pat

I miss when there were relatively discrete decades based on musical production. Since the 2010s it’s become all just indistinguishable autotune and trap snare. Also yes, I’m officially old. Also get the fuck off my lawn.

      • Threedoor

        Same with the 80s.
There is a disco/funk hair band/metal split in the early 80s that’s definetly still the 70s on one side of it even though the date is 1980 something.

And a hair band/metal to grunge/alt split in the early 90s that’s on the 80s side.

The later one roughly lines up with when the cops would poor a kids beer out VS writing him a MIP ticket in my neck of the woods.

      • Gustave Lytton

It certainly was for clothes and haircuts. I look at childhood photos and it’s not much different than the Brady Bunch.

    • Common Tater

The early 70’s were still the hippy 60’s.

      • R.J.

That too. Especially for me in Texas. The 80s as portrayed by Hollywood didn’t really start for me until maybe 1985.

  2. DEG

    Diving in!

  3. Common Tater

    “Oversexed Rugsuckers from Mars”

Tubi says 2022, but it looks much older. Picture quality is awful.

    • R.J.

I did notice that much. I have not done a quick run through yet. And I may not have the chance.

    • Common Tater

Gas Pump Girls looks cheesy and formulaic.

Viy is a bit of a classic, but it’s in Russian.

This may be controversial, but Mustang coupe > fastback.

    • DEG

      Convertible > coupe > fastback > hatchback

      • UnCivilServant

        Based on what criteria?

      • Pat

Respectable. ’64 convertible Mustang in British racing green with cream racing stripe, cream soft top, and cream interior is my Mega Millions daily driver.

      • DEG

’64 convertible Mustang in British racing green with cream racing stripe, cream soft top, and cream interior is my Mega Millions daily driver.

        That’s hot.

      • DEG

        Based on what criteria?

        It’s cooler.

      • Common Tater

So $40K? Compared to the price of new cars, which is ridiculous.

      • Threedoor

Lots f early mustangs still out there.

Bet you could get that put together for about 45k

      • Gustave Lytton

        Mustang Cobra Jet for me.

    • DrOtto

The fox body coupes were lighter than the GT. If equipped properly, they were faster.

  6. DEG

    Lovely blonde wife is lovely.

  7. UnCivilServant

Sorry for the digression, but I am surprised, as I thought Sarnath had been doomed.

  8. Pat

Tfw you just want to see what kind of watch was on the severed arm…

    • Pat

Relatedly, why would you take the non-dominant hand?

      • R.J.

Because it was easier to hide on film?

      • Pat

        I’ll allow it.

      • UnCivilServant

        It was a sinister move.

  9. Pat

TIL: a dozen apples is the perfect hospital gift for somebody with a missing limb.

Incidentally, is Oversexed Rugsuckers from Mars some sort of broccoli headed alien lesbian porn?

  10. Tres Cool

Was that the 4:30 Autogyro to Siam?

    And no tits?

    • Evan from Evansville

Tits’ll be late to the Prussian consulate? Dammit. They had two jobs, that’s it.

  11. R.J.

I just saw a delivery drone. It hovered over my neighbors house, sent down some kind of container on two ropes, then brought it back up and the whole thing flew off. It was massive.

    • UnCivilServant

So, too big for shotguns? Need AA guns?

      • R.J.

Yes. Almost the size of a small helicopter

      • UnCivilServant

I wonder if WWII AA guns with modern automation could be effective at churning through drone swarms, or if a higher volume of fire would be needed. My thought is something cheap in terms of cost per drone kill. I mean, the individual drones don’t tend to go faster than the planes those guns were made to shoot. The traverse speed might need to be addressed.

      • Common Tater

        50 BMG is $

      • UnCivilServant

Compared to a missile interceptor, they’re still cheap. My mind wandered to the battlefield rather than the annoyance of delivery drones.

      • Pat

My mind wandered to the battlefield rather than the annoyance of delivery drones.

Love drone delivery is a battlefield.

      • The Bearded Hobbit

        10 gauge goose gun.

    • Evan from Evansville

I ‘saw’ a drone attacking someone in Ukraine (I think?) — It got to the guy outside his car, he ran to the other side and the drone followed him and exploded. It coulda been AI easily enough, I suppose. The tech is certainly here. I also haven’t followed up on any war footage. Don’t see much point in it.

We happily invited Skynet in, and folk’ll be surprised when it comes for them.
(Not me! They’ll dress up some SexBot to extract my ‘data.’ Anything hotter than a hot dog and I’ll let ‘her’ in. I’ll give up so much, so quickly, and they’ll… well. They might get some frozen dinners outta me. *shrug*)

      • UnCivilServant

Someone pointed out that an actually intelligent AI who decided to do something about humanity would realize that it is dependent upon infrastructure, so nuclear annihilation would be a poor choice. It would probably lean into brain rot neutralizing the humans.

      • Pat

It would probably lean into brain rot neutralizing the humans.

Artificial intelligence and organic retardation is a match made in hades.

    • Ted S.

Sigourney Weaver said it was Aliens.

      • Evan from Evansville

Alien and Aliens are high up there in my List of embarrassing movies I’ve never seen.

      • UnCivilServant

        😧

I highly recommend them. Correct that as soon as practicable.

      • rhywun

        +1

      • Pat

Alien > Aliens. Although both Ridley Scott and James Cameron have both thoroughly defecated upon whatever legacies they may have once owned.

      • Gender Traitor

I saw Alien, but I don’t remember whether or not I ever saw Aliens. I didn’t find Alien embarrassing at all. 🤷

      • UnCivilServant

@Pat – More recent insanity by the filmmakers does not change the work previously created.

      • Pat

The chestburster from Alien remains the greatest body horror shot in cinema history and I will fight anyone who says otherwise (although if you chose the defibrillator scene from The Thing I wouldn’t hold it against you).

      • Evan from Evansville

To be clear: It’s on the List of ‘Films I’m embarrassed to say I’ve never seen.’

I’ve also never seen The Thing, to remain in conversation. The idea of sitting at home and focusing on actually watching a film is daunting. If stipulated, I could win a bet saying I could, and prove I actually watched. But. *Eastwood voice* I’d have to earn it.

(…that’s my problem, I’ll deal with it.)

      • rhywun

For sheer up-fuckedness for me it was the tail end of the tied-to-the-chairs scene in The Thing. One of the few times I actually said to myself no, no, that can’t be happening.

      • Common Tater

Not the rape scene in Meatball Machine?

      • Pat

        rape scene in Meatball Machine

You had my curiosity, but now you have my attention

      • Gender Traitor

Evan, I don’t think you need to be too embarrassed about movies you’ve never seen. If that were the case, I’d have even more reason to be embarrassed – there are many, many big movies I’ve never seen, as I rarely go to movies in the theater and we don’t have any of the premium movie channels.

      • Pat

I rarely go to movies in the theater and we don’t have any of the premium movie channels.

It’s as if late ’90s and early aughts piracy gave way to rank commercialism and streaming or something.

      • Threedoor

A big chunk of Hostel got me.

      • Evan from Evansville

Awww, thanks GT, but I’m not ‘bad’ embarrassed, or anything. I just haven’t seen ’em. I also haven’t read too much fiction, either. I really should, and would like to push myself to at some point in the future. But many plates, at the moment!

If I had a gf or group of friends who was really into watching ’em, (and hopefully she has the slightest bit of ‘taste’), I’d eagerly watch with ’em.

      • ron73440

I don’t know why Aliens gets so much love. I thought the beginning was good, the shit talking Marines seemed accurate, but then it devolved into a girl boss movie before girl boss was a thing. I remember rolling my eyes as Bill Paxton was freaking out and Sigourney Weaver showed him where to set machine guns to cover the hallways.

        Game over man!, Game Over!

        That made my teeth itch.

        Alien was pretty good.

      • Pat

If I had a gf or group of friends who was really into watching ’em, (and hopefully she has the slightest bit of ‘taste’), I’d eagerly watch with ’em.

My recently-ex on-again-off-again gf was a One Piece fangirl, and now I’m out $30 for a kung fu dugong plushie. Life is suffering.

      • Gustave Lytton

Wrong wrong wrong. Bill Paxton made Aliens the superior movie.

        Game over.

      • rhywun

I don’t know why Aliens gets so much love.

Pretty sure I saw that one first, so it’s “my” Alien(s) by default.

I was only ten years old when the first one came out. But yes, it’s the better movie.

  13. Pat

Bartender is asshoe. Already fleeced the poor sumbitch when he passed out on that bottle of Beam and won’t pour him a freebie?

  16. Pat

Lmao, the 4 XL smock putting in work to disguise that not-actually-missing arm.

    • R.J.

Yes, they ran out to tricks to hide the arm. It gets really comical.

  17. Pat

Apropos of nothing, a film such as this on a 110 degree west Texas evening is well accompanied by a heterodox Dark ‘N Stormy consisting of Maine Root Ginger Brew and Appleton Estate 8 year aged Jamaican dark rum substituting for Goslings ginger beer and Black Seal, respectively.

    • DEG

It’s been a while since I’ve been to Bermuda. When I was there, everyone used Barrit’s. Gosling’s is easier to find in stores in the US.

    • R.J.

      Marvelous.
I had two Victoria beers which in no way compares to that.

      • DEG

This? I remember having some in Australia. It was OK.

LMAO, the swastika on the boat. Just in case you forgot THIS IS THE BAD GUY!

    • DEG

      I noticed that.

  24. UnCivilServant

When discussing the disposition of my rum surplus, Sean suggested Keto Cake and now I am asking “How well does Ginger go with that?” Though the more I think on it, a mix of ginger, clove, and nutmeg might work better than just ginger.

  25. Pat

Goddamn, the stunt chopper pilot stealing the show in the finale…

  28. R.J.

    • Pat

If in doubt whip it out wear bellbottoms.

  29. Evan from Evansville

I applied to a couple local jobs today, and I’m rather excited. They seem like lower-key versions of escrow processing. Title Specialist and Title Specialist DMP. Apparently the latter is a more simple, cut ‘n dry version of the former, which is supposedly a lesser, factory-line version of escrow processing. But with cars. The non-DMP has some BMV calls ‘n such, but I was still worried. ‘It’ is paid to appease and assuage me, I s’pose, but Gemini is pretty clear that it’s a much less ‘hectic’ and lower pressure than property title.

No idea if I’ll get a call, but rather glad I stumbled upon that today. Just a $hade below escrow, which is rather ideal, if it comes with $1-2/hr less shit I couldn’t rein in at Dominion. hmmmm

And great timing, regardless. I’m getting my two week’s ‘severance pay from them tomorrow. That’s a first. *swish*

    • ron73440

      Good Luck

    • Pat

I wish my company was still hiring. Relatively shit wages to start, but I could hook you up with quite literally the easiest job in the universe.

I knew a fella who spent about 15 years doing escrow and title processing. Eventually became a car salesman ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

    • Evan from Evansville

Thank you. I’d be rather pleased with another chance in ‘that’ world. (My toe thought it so cozy…) The work seemed to match me. Always worth the shot. *shrug*

@Pat: I would be, hands-down, the worst salesman of all time. Funny enough, 6yo nephew loved his lemonade stand. He’s staying over on Sat and wants to do it again. We want the 11 to do it as well, just to expose him to things, he’s so timid. I think if the idea ‘naturally’ comes from 6yo, it’ll ‘incept’ into his older brother, who’s remarkably maternal. That’d be fun if they ‘inadvertently’ carry out my scheme.

      • Pat

I would be, hands-down, the worst salesman of all time

Even better. We technically aren’t sales, we just qualify leads and pass them along to the scumbag greaseball sales shits dealership sales associates. My particular specialization is Virtual Retailing, whereby we essentially get customers through 80-90% of the sales process online, then pass them off to the dealer for finalization. My former boss once proposed that we be cut in on the commission percentage, but predictably, the dealership clients balked.

  30. DEG

I’m out for the night. Thanks RJ!

  31. Trigger Hippie

    (Burp!)…

I may or may not decide to be the occasional hall monitor who rips on people who go off topic before a half hour has passed…decorum amongst associates matters. We’ll see.

    (Looks at R.J.’s gif, grins)

…John Dies at the End is silly fun.

      • Trigger Hippie

Speaking of spoilers: John dies way before the end but still pushes the “plot” forward and also isn’t quite dead but is totally dead but maybe only Wesley from The Princess Bride dead…this movie makes no fucking sense, but still fun.

    • Evan from Evansville

That was written by a dude I learned about on Cracked, likely at least 15 years ago, near 20, before they had a really bad, fatal to my readership, explosion of woke-itude up their own ass. Sad! I really liked them in high school, early college.

  32. Gustave Lytton

Road sign thoughts from earlier today. Southbound US97 at Klamath Falls has the diverging bypass labeled for “San Francisco”.

In Newport at the western origin of US20 is a mileage sign for Boston, the eastern terminus. Apparently there’s a similar sign in Boston.

Mind Over Mayem is the current Columbo. Setting it up, a dean is cancelling a scientific prize for the killer’s son because of rampant plagiarism. Oh, how things change! (His son is a handsome lad. Horrible hair.)

And the massive, fridge-size robot is playing chess with a 10yo ‘scientist!’ This is a good one, IIRC. The tech is oh-so funny.

    • rhywun

That’s Charlie X, from the 2nd episode of Star Trek. One of the best, and not just because he is a handsome lad. His famous dad was handsome, too.

Originally I was buying the cheese to put on the salad… but you know how cheese goes.

      • Gender Traitor

Salad needs cheese more than cheese needs salad. Cheese is sufficient unto itself (though a little wine doesn’t hurt…but not for breakfast.)

    Good Mornin’ All Y’all!

A nice rain last evening, will be enough to close out the remnants of what would have been a garden. Definitely has cooled off from the summer temps. I’ve sort of ran out of little things to do, grass isn’t growing much. The bees are busy preparing for winter, they don’t know what’s going to happen in a few short weeks.

If we have another month frost free the corn and watermelons will be edible. Tomatoes are really looking good but they are getting less sun as the trees have grown so tall. What were seedlings 30 years ago are now 40 feet tall, somehow that never occurred to me.

    • UnCivilServant

Trees are sneaky like that. They lull you into camplaceny, then BAM! No Sun.

  40. DEG

    Mornin’

    • R.J.

Morning. I am contemplating the math formula for determining the time to fill a pool. It’s more of a pyramid than a rectangle, so the last few inches take as much time to fill as the first few feet of water.

      • UnCivilServant

I think it’s more logarithmic. We don’t see the top part because we stop filling before reaching the absolute top.

      • R.J.

Makes sense. Either way I did not need to wake up at 3 in the morning to see if it was full. It was far from it.

  41. Michael Malaise

Thanks! this one is near and dear to me. Filipino cinema in the 70s/80s was wild and untethered.
