Thursday Links in the Afternoon

by | Aug 20, 2026 | I Am Lame | 122 comments

Hello good people. And Glibs. Mostly Glibs. How are you all doing this fine afternoon? I am prepping a brisket for barbecuing this weekend, along with some beef ribs. Also, my mother is making seafood paella this weekend and invited us. That’s one of my absolute favorite dishes. And one I don’t attempt. I think it would just taste like disappointment if I made it. Okay, here we go, let’s link some links.

Well, she seems smarter than the average collaborator with FBI informants. She at least googled how long she’d go to prison for. I don’t usually root for ISIS, but this one has me on the fence.

Man bites dog story: Portland jury finds $0 in damages for business owner who shot a burglar. And threw a cup of urine in the burglar’s face. Who among us hasn’t wanted to throw our piss cup in a bum’s face?

I believe Eric Swalwell may end up in prison.

Uh oh, Lil Big Kim is getting uppity. He’s shooting missiles again.

This news is going to be “too local”, but they might as well call this the Bum Express. Atlanta/Warner Robbins/Valdosta/Gainesville/Tampa/St. Pete? Who the hell is poor enough to take the bus from Atlanta to Tampa, but has legitimate business there? I mean, its great for UF students from Tampa, St. Pete, assuming Greyhound didn’t already do that route.

Was picking up my older kids from the movies this weekend, and this came on the dad rock channel.

“Dad, can you turn it down?”

::Turns it up::

“Dad, turn it down!”

::Turns it up::

Me: “It won’t go any louder!”

Brett set out to find America, the real America, the America of strip malls and serial killers, of butthole waxing and kelp smoothies, of cocaine and maggots. He sought it in the most American part of America—Florida: swamp gas and fever dreams, where love arrives on a rickety boat and leaves when it doesn't have the money for its fourth abortion. Oh, where has Brett gone? He’s drinking at the neck of America’s wang, chewing its foreskin and working its shaft. Brett is becoming legend. Brett can never die. Brett can never die. Brett is America, facedown in his own patriotic puke: the red his blood, the white his stomach lining, and the cold, cold blue his gas station slushie, spiked with coconut rum and tetracycline.

You know that plagiarism scandal that ended up with a professor committing suicide?

Well, academia has responded. The professor who exposed the fraud has been suspended, and says he will surely be fired.

His boss began the last academic year with an epic defense of academic freedom.

Today? She(he) says that academic freedom has its limits. (And presumably being entirely correct is not a defense)

Bowie had allegedly discussed her plans with FBI informants and spent weeks doing surveillance of the Capitol, including taking pictures from various vantage points, including an “observation hall nearby,” the criminal complaint said.

Why do I get the feeling that those FBI informants were setting her up?

    • cyto

That would be a shocking development with absolutely no precident.

    • Brett L

I mean, if she hadn’t gotten their encouragement, advice, and support, she would have just been another angry person saying they wished someone would blow up the capitol building in Albany. You can’t arrest people for that. But seriously, ISIS in 2025/26 is a good indication that it’s the FBI.

Sadly, the article has a partial paywall – because I wish to know more. Like, why was there a cup of urine close at hand?

My first thought upon reading the headline was, “A Portland jury?” I’m sure y’all can relate.

    • Brett L

The owner was sleeping in his business to save money, and I guess had a piss cup because he didn’t want to get up and walk all the way from the office to the pisser?

        Been there done that.

      • Brochettaward

Weirder part isn’t just that he had a piss cup, but that he had it in his hand when the bum came in. Like his first thought when he heard someone breaking in was grab the pee.

TOO LOCAL NEWS: Veto Day round-up

If Gov. Kelly Ayotte launched a veto war by rejecting a record 33 bills passed by her fellow Republicans, then Veto Day was “The Legislature Strikes Back.”

Republican majorities overrode seven of Ayotte’s vetoes, the most overrides of a governor by a legislature controlled by the same party in at least 100 years. And they did so by margins that were either impressive or embarrassing, depending on one’s perspective.

For example, when Ayotte’s veto of the state’s 10-year highway plan reached the House floor, just 25 Republicans voted to sustain it. In the Senate, not a single Republican stuck with Ayotte. The veto was overridden 24-0.

Some of the other override votes drew as few as six House votes in support of Ayotte’s position.

For Republicans, the votes were not only about ensuring conservative legislation became law. They also sent a signal to a first-term governor that it was time to collaborate more closely with party leaders.

    • Brochettaward

Why exactly is a Republican governor basically telling her own party to fuck off that many times? I see one of the more high profile one was trannie bathroom shit.

Is it just an example of people in New Hampshire mostly needing a R next to their name to win, and that the party basically consists of Rino’s and then more conservative types and the governor is the latter?

      • DEG

Ayotte is GOP Establishment. Very similar to the previous governor, Chris Sununu, except somehow managing to be friendlier than him to law enforcement probably due to her background as a prosecutor.

Libertarians have been making in-roads in the state Republican party thanks to the Free State Project, people bailing on the LPNH, and several strong liberty lobbying groups (the NHLA being the biggest and strongest). It’s easy to get elected to the State House of Representatives. There is roughly one representative per 3100 people (400 representatives for a state of roughly 1.3 million people). There are 102 state representatives with an A or higher rating from the NHLA. It’s less easy to get elected to the State Senate. There are 24 senators. The senate tends to be friendlier to the major party establishments and lobbyists. However, we have two NHLA A rated senators with four being A- rated.

On the trannie stuff: A similar bathroom bill has passed before and been vetoed by Sununu. I forget how many times Sununu vetoed it. On the other hand, Sununu signed legislation prohibiting transing minors and signed legislation requiring all kids (I think restricted to public schools only but can’t remember) compete in sports based on sex on their birth certificate.

TOO LOCAL NEWS: Opinion piece on the end of car inspections in NH. They haven’t been gone more than a year as inspections ended in late January. Otherwise, I agree with the author.

As a member of the House Transportation Committee, I spent years trying to make this system reasonable, even before I was elected. We did not start out trying to throw the whole thing in the trash. We sat down with stakeholders and asked simple questions: How can we make this fair? How can we stop predatory practices while keeping people safe?

Instead of working with us, the special interests dug in their heels and refused to negotiate. When they ran out of actual evidence, they defaulted to the worst kind of fearmongering. They told us that if we got rid of the mandatory inspection sticker requirement, “people were going to die” on our roads.

Well, the mandatory inspection sticker requirement has been gone for more than a year now, and guess what? The sky has not fallen. The fearmongers could not point to a single accident, let alone a fatality, caused by the end of mandatory inspection stickers. Not one.

    • Threedoor

Anyone that uses the word “stakeholders” with a straight face deserves every terrible thing that could possibly happen to them.

      • Pat

I’m with Threedoor on this one. Use the term shareholders if you’re referring to the people with a stake in the business. Everyone else is either an employee, customer, or vendor.

      • UnCivilServant

Shareholder is a specific subcategory of stakeholder who is a partial owner of a business. It only applies in the context of a joint stock corporation, and is not fit for purpose in other contexts.

      • Threedoor

You are a shareholder, with legitimate interest and ownership or you are not part of the equation at all.

Stakeholder is like using the Marxist language of class.

      • Pat

In those cases, substitute “owner” or “proprietor.” The punters are still just customers, the employees are still just an operating expense, and the vendors are still just suppliers. If you don’t have money or property on the line, you have no stake.

      • R C Dean

Stakeholder means someone who wants to stick their dick in your business even though they have no position or role to do so.

In classic Newspeak, a stakeholder is someone with no stake in whatever they want to stick their dick.

      • UnCivilServant

Okay, you’re all correct, people with a direct stake in the success of an institution but no shares are irrelevant and should be ignored at all times.

      • Pat

people with a direct stake in the success of an institution but no shares are irrelevant and should be ignored at all times

The people you’re describing defintionally have, at best, an indirect stake. That doesn’t mean their concerns aren’t worthy of consideration, only that we shouldn’t make a category error in describing them. When the company I work for lays off its entire human workforce in the next 5 years once our LLM is sufficiently developed I’ll be affected by it, but that doesn’t make me a stakeholder.

      • UnCivilServant

        Why discard the taxonomy?

      • Nephilium

In the world I came from, stakeholder was used frequently for projects. Generally as a term for “interested parties” or “groups using the new software daily”. As an example, a change in call center software, or big call flow change would have the following people as stakeholders:

        Call center manager
Supervisors over teams being impacted (depending on the size of the change)
        Lead Implementer
Support representative (who will need to support the new process/software)
Business representative (who will be impacted by changes to flows/processes/software)

      • Threedoor

They don’t have a stake in it.

        They have a hustle.
They have a grift that relies on the government continuing that particular program.

Those that have a true share in the process are the taxpayers and those negatively impacted by the hustle.

      • R C Dean

UnCiv, you will note that I left room for people who aren’t owners/shareholders.

“Stakeholder” is a catchall term for people who aren’t employees, customers, etc. People who have no role or relationship with the business, but claim some secondary impact/“externality” entitles them to dictate terms.

When these people are middle-aged women, we call them Karens or possibly AWFLs.

    • UnCivilServant

I would like to elaborate – The term itself is not an issue.

The question is of context. In the operation of an institution, you have to factor in additional categotires, you talk as if you want to ban the discussion of one of those categories by eliminating the word.

Do stakeholders get to say whether a business changes direction or sheds dead weight? No

Should we get rid of the term and categroy? No.

      • Pat

Should we get rid of the term and category? No.

Ehh… I just think there’s more precise language that better defines the categories. A broad view of “stakeholder” is how you end up with union contracts that assume fixed market conditions over a multi-decade period, or “interstate commerce” being affected by Roscoe Filburn failing to export his wheat beyond his farm.

      • R.J.

I prefer the term “motherfucker.” Replace stakeholder with motherfucker and read it again.

      • Pat

Replace stakeholder with motherfucker and read it again.

This may be the new “Christ, what an asshole” inasmuch as nearly any sentence affected by the substitution loses no value thereby.

      • R C Dean

Unfortunately, the term “stakeholder” is universally used to give those people a say.

      • UnCivilServant

RC, I think we run into the verbage in very different contexts. See Mr Ilium’s summary above. It’s always been a neutral term of people who should not be ignored in a project if you want success.

      • Threedoor

It’s been about three years since I first heard the term.

It’s 100% of the time been used as RC Dean has described it since I have been aware of the term.

Jury awards $0 to homeless burglar after owner throws cup of urine at his face, shoots him 3 times
    —
I’m remarkably surprised. Paywalled and couldn’t sneak around it, mostly out of ignorance, but I’m strongly guessin’ burglar Kenneth Voyles carried a bit of a reputation. A ‘polite’ way for ’em to silently bark a ‘FINALLY!’ or similar. If he wasn’t a semi-known troublemaker, I’d suspect more of a rally to ‘help’ the troubled, homelessnessed individual. But HE is white. Big problem for him, and negates everything else I said, sadly.

Here’s a positive: Pic of him as he “the positioning of his body when he was shot” reveals a suspicious(?) scar on his inner arm. Well, I, Evan, would cover that up unless it helped me. I presume public defender, but can’t verify, but they gave him a shower and gave him decent enough court clothes, probably a shave and a hair cut. (More than two bits. Damn inflation, Time.) That’s a really under-thought of ‘decency’ for American courts to ensure and provide for those who can’t get their own lawyer.

Not the biggest of things, but not at all meaningless. Good job, USA.

    • Threedoor

Should have put one more round in that bum.

    • UnCivilServant

If I recall, the burglar got out of rehab shortly before breaking in to the store. Either that or was ordered in to it. I forget the order of events.

I’m somewhat annoyed that there’s no good sanctions for lawyers who abet these frivolous lawsuits. You break in to some place and get yourself shot, you should know you won’t get a dime, and the lawyers should know 200% that they would suffer consequences for pursuing it.

    • Brochettaward

Firefox has an extension to bypass news site paywalls. Seems to let me access it in full. There’s other workarounds with the paywall crap.

I get that news outlets need to make some money to keep themselves going at least in theory they serve a useful function, but it’s pretty fucking stupid to block people from reading your site at all. If people can’t see your content to judge it, they sure as fuck aren’t just going to start paying for it. And most of these ‘papers’ aren’t producing anything that’s so immediately interesting or compelling as to get people to cough up money for it period let alone just at a glance.

Nothing in that article even bothers to describe why the guy had a cup of pee. Which was my only real question.

But shooting a homeless man who is fleeing from you and kind of trapped isn’t exactly the picture perfect case for self-defense. Guy shouldn’t break in, and I’m not sympathetic if dumb shit happens, but firing bullets when he’s clearly trying to escape from you

      • Evan from Evansville

“Nothing in that article even bothers to describe why the guy had a cup of pee. Which was my only real question.”

God dammit. We talked about this, or were you not here? I’m not the only one who has a piss jug. (Yes, I still do. But not the fancy schmancy one I had in the hospital.) Dude was likely there late, possibly sleeping for something early in the morning, and turning on all those lights, or walking around in TREACHEROUS, dimly lit aisles with fragile product at stake, uh. Don’t wander through it all! You’ll never get back to sleep. Fill your jug.

Then, burglar shows up and is ripping his way in! Well, I presume he had his weapon ‘near’ him, but ya know that piss didn’t go far. Use whatcha got.

      • R C Dean

Fuck him. He’s a burglar and a thief. Defense of property should justify lethal force.

      • Brochettaward

I don’t argue with the notion that defending property justifies lethal force. I argue with the part where they are shot when they flee. In this case, the property is the business. He hadn’t taken anything, he hadn’t even done damage. Shooting him as he attempts to escape is kind of murder to me and seems to only have been protected by the law through castle doctrine (which applied because he was sleeping in his business).

It isn’t like he grabbed a piece of merchandise or cash and tried to run off with it. Whatever the bums intentions were, once he saw there was resistance he fled.

This is the same category as someone who is an altercation and the other person relents, but you continue to beat them for the fun of it.

      • UnCivilServant

        e hadn’t even done damage.

This part is untrue, he damaged the structure to gain entry.

      • Brochettaward

I skimmed the article, but he seemed to have gained entry through a dog door or some shit?

      • UnCivilServant

The linked article omits the details of his entry which involved removing a few panels. The doggie door was his first attempted egress, after which he picked up bolt cutters to attack a padlock. Also, he had picked up at least a tool bag and power drill with the intent of taking it with him prior to the initial confrontation – it is unclear when this was dropped or discarded. The shooting happened when the burglar was facing the owner with bolt cutters upraised. So he was in a posture easily seen as threatening.

  19. Brochettaward

Apparently there’s either multiple guys using Family Guy characters to peddle conspiracies of various credibility. This is one I hadn’t heard of myself.

I had long had some idea that consolidation in the food industry was the result of government policy as it has been in most sectors (all the while the left cries about market failures and monopolies). Just hadn’t heard it connected directly to farms. This seems less deliberate though and more unintended consequences and small farms getting caught up in fuckery which left their land to be bought up by the big guys.

    • Threedoor

      Most farms are small farms.

And most of them are corporations.

So many farmers lose it all by the third generation. Typically because they don’t upgrade equipment, don’t do maintenance on it, or spend like typical farmers (worse than drunken sailors) and buy dumb shit like alcohol and King Ranch F450s all the time. The cyclical debt so many of them get into is insane. So many of them live off of debt rather than being solvent and paying cash for their needs.

      • Brochettaward

I think part of that probably comes from relying on credit to begin with.

Once you start, spending money you don’t have, it’s kind of hard to stop and think about tomorrow when the person who actually paid for it comes knocking.

    • Pat

This seems less deliberate though and more unintended consequences and small farms getting caught up in fuckery which left their land to be bought up by the big guys.

Pretty much. It’s not as if the government swooped into an otherwise free market and tilted the playing field toward Big Business. More like farmers had already become welfare queens, the man paying the piper changed the tune, and the people who could only dance the waltz lost out to those who knew how to tango. The people who lost the farm to Big Ag probably would have lost it to a ruthless capitalist 50 years sooner in an actual free market.

      • Threedoor

The small farmers that don’t screw up become big Agg.
