Sunday Morning Rush Links

by | Sep 6, 2026 | Daily Links | 166 comments

It’s “Rush Week” at our local college (not the university, which banned frats and sororities about 20 years ago). I don’t pretend to understand how any of that works- my college didn’t have any frats or sororities and if it had, I can’t imagine that I’d have had any interest in that shit. The connection with Greek letters is mystifying. And despite my love of fine wine, I am not a heavy drinker. So we have lots of drunk sorority girls dressed as sluts staggering around the Gulch at night. And they show up at our café in the morning looking quite a bit worse for the wear looking for something, anything, that will quell their hangovers. Before you have a mental image of hot-mess ASU or UCLA chicks, understand that the local college is pretty much Ag and Voc-Tech, and the girls are… consistent with that. If you’re a Californian, it’s Davis, not Berkeley.

That said, I have to compliment the various frats and sororities- they respect the quiet hours in the residential parts, keeping the carousing to the business district and the two village bars, and they have volunteer crews out the next day cleaning up the mess. The cops take care of any problems efficiently and without a heavy hand, and the kids respond accordingly. They’re good kids.

Birthday searches are much safer than driving through the Gulch at night, because you find people like the father of atomic theory; a guy who was not only a true piece of shit, he handed us an enduring legacy of putrid turds (at least normal pieces of shit get flushed away); a guy who empowered the Soongs using some nose paint; one of the better-known gaseous pseudophilosopher-frauds; the Ezra Pound of rock; a woman who was the quintessence of failing upward (and was a good punch-line during the 2016 debates); the inspiration for The Hair; and a grandmaster whom I met and will never forget (in a good way!).

I will forget these Links after a bit.

Sunk cost fallacy. This is gonna dribble on forever until the OMWC Plan is implemented.

And you know if HE says it, it must be true.

The NYT is in fine form, as usual. Nazis, lol.

I am now convinced that the trolling is deliberate.

The original movie didn’t have Henry Fonda get shot. This guy inevitably will be.

And guess who will pay the hit man?

Another guy waiting for the inevitable bullet.

God, what a horrible choice.

Reeking of desperation to get people to swallow this shit.

Hilarious. I wonder if they had the mandatory “diversity” statements in their grant proposal for this research.

I always wondered why Eric Clapton’s reputation survived and Robin Trower has been mostly forgotten. Trower did almost the same thing stylistically as far as playing, had power trios much like Cream, same genre and style, and was (to be honest) much better at it than Clapton was.

The Greek system was a place for kids to find a compatible group to conform to. It’s obviously outdated in the age of Grievance Studies which mandate that the students conform to the ONE TRUE GROUP.

    • ZWAK, doktor of BRAIN SCIENCE!

Now it seems to be the bulwark against the idiots. And if its an ag school, is there an AGR sorority? Or, are they “little sisters”?

  3. Shpip

You can disagree with this juror and the outcome but still celebrate that our legal system comes down not to judges or lawyers, but to simple citizens doing justice in thousands of cases a year.

Frankly, that’s what scares me — especially when I see just how simple a lot of citizens are.

    • (((Jarflax

This is the true sign that our society is hopelessly broken. When the chaos and tyranny are produced by the powerful you can hope to overthrow them. When they are emergent from the populace at large you can’t.

    • Stinky Wizzleteats

It’s a mess that’s easily manipulated in all directions. If that woman had strangled three puppies in her basement the same people braying for a not guilty verdict would want her head on a stick and she’d be behind bars on a good long sentence already.

      • SarumanTheWoefullyIgnorant

Depends upon the political affiliation. IMO Fauci did much worse with the beagle puppies and he’s still idolized by the same crowd.

I just cahn’t tell you all how sorry I am to have made public my domestic abuse from a fellow Glib. How awfully inconvenient.

    Moj, you cool.

    • (((Jarflax

Help has been offered. Suggestions have been made. You respond by vaguely hinting at secret obstacles that prevent you from taking any action. Then you come back a day or two later and start the process over. What precisely do you want us to do? Wail and rend our garments at your plight? I sympathize, I truly do. I understand that it is hard to uproot your entire life to get out of a bad place, but it is the only solution. He is not magically going to become nice to you, and if you cannot kick him out or persuade your mom to do so, then you need to leave.

    • Grumbletarian

Domestic abuse from a fellow Glib that you repeatedly refuse to leave. Are you chained to a stake in the cellar with only a laptop that he conveniently leaves for you to log into this site and call for help? That seems strange to me.

      • Grumbletarian

Or is this one of those situations where the woman just wants some empathy and doesn’t actually want the problem solved? If so, then here.

I’m sincerely sorry this is happening to you. Sounds like Bob is a shitty individual. Maybe he’ll be a different person tomorrow. Fingers crossed for you!

If it is TOG, I am reminded of Prime’s basic question in situations like this: “Advice or shoulder?” You all default to advice and TOG may be looking for a shoulder.

The only thing that’s surprising about that diversity article is that it was actually published. It is nice seeing all of the neat bar graphs and whatnot confirming what we already knew though.

A GoFundMe supporting Lindsay Clancy’s parents has raised over $1.1 million in the aftermath of the mistrial of the Massachusetts woman accused of killing her three children.

A small part of me likens this to the Erik and Lyle Menendez case. For those who don’t recall, they are brothers who shotgunned their parents to death in 1989. They were motivated by fear from their father’s purported sexual and psychological abuse.

Since there was a substantial amount of money from the parents, Erik was able to retain the services of Leslie Abramson as lead counsel. After a prolonged, televised trial, Abramson got the brothers a mistrial.

Then the money ran out. The brothers went from a famous southern California litigator to the public defender, were swiftly convicted of murder, and have spent the last 30-some years in prison.

I think we’re seeing a similar scenario play out now, with Kevin Reddington playing the Abramson part. Cause a commotion, play on the suicidal empathy of females, get a mistrial (and get paid).

Come the re-trail next year, the money to pay Reddington is gone, Mrs. Clancy is represented by public defenders, and she’s convicted.

Maybe I’m wrong. Guess we’ll see.

    • Stinky Wizzleteats

Yeah but those poor guys were orphans though. Not guilty.

      • Fourscore

        Mrs Clancy lost 3 children.

        Have you no compassion?

Gotta say, though, I do have some respect for her husband getting revenge by marrying someone else and having a kid with her.

I mean, since he didn’t just finish her off on the spot, I think that’s probably the best he could do.

      • ZWAK, doktor of BRAIN SCIENCE!

I am still surprised that none of them have killed themselves.

Having had a close personal experience with a schizophrenic it can be difficult both to get help and get the person to heed the help. Prescription medication is not followed, etc.

Clapton was a passable vocalist, Trower just made goofy faces. It shouldn’t matter for judging guitar skills, but it does. I recall hearing that someone told Stevie Ray Vahn early in his career that he had to be the lead singer, no matter how bad he was if he wanted to be successful.

      • Don escaped Memphis

        I’d add

        Clapton was a passable vocalist
the popular trope is that Layla was his big breakthrough: he found his voice and then the public found it

        someone told Stevie Ray
if you can’t figure it out at the knee of Jimmie or Albert, you ain’t figuring it out at all

Trower just made goofy faces. It shouldn’t matter for judging guitar skills, but it does
I thought about pointing this out to Howlin’ Wolf………..and then I thought against it

speaking as someone who was born at The Crossroads, I’ll just say that it took Clapton decades to bore me, whereas managed it in a single concert; in fairness, after burning at least 10,000hours stealing all those licks, I’m shocked that I ever cared so much

      • Don escaped Memphis

whereas [Trower] managed it in a single concert

      • Common Tater

I was listening to the live record of Wheels of Fire last night. Clapton can sing, not as well as Jack Bruce, and he’s always going to be known more for his guitar playing.

  8. Mojeaux

@Bro: I washed my hands of Bob years ago because he was an asshole to me with no provocation, although he’s been an asshole to everybody without provocation, so there’s a reason he’s not around here (or is he?). He’s responded to me on Twitter several times and I finally blocked him (I almost never block anybody) because I don’t need to see his name in my stream.

@Jackdaw has made several accurate points. “All of my recollections of Toxteth’s comments are of coherent discussions of actual topics.” Yes. The Commenter Formerly Known As Toxteth O’Grady does not, in fact, sound like Toxteth O’Grady.

Finally, “I’m too busy to read replies” while actively begging for help to escape a potentially lethal situation is the stupidest thing I’ve ever read.

    • Ted S.

She’s also sorry the rest of us are too stupid to see her brilliance.

    • (((Jarflax

He’s a grifter. That became very obvious to me a long time back when he repeatedly asked for and received help from us, talking about hardships and his plans to restart his life, then started his life of smoking dope and playing frisbee golf. He’s a stupid one because he kept fishing this tiny pond until it became obvious to most, but on the other hand it has largely worked out for him. I’m not sure what he’d gain by accusing himself of abuse on TOG’s account, maybe trying to suck some more money out of us? But when I offered her financial help she did not take it. Maybe because I insisted on hearing an actual plan to leave before I’d send money?

      • Chafed

That’s very likely right. I had a brief phone call with her in which I referred her to a local battered women’s shelter. I still have no idea if she contacted them.

      • Q Continuum

If it’s true that Chafed or others have actually spoken with her, then it’s possible whoever she is (ToG?) is in on it and trying to get money. I agree that it’s definitely not real/happening as described.

I’ve chosen to keep an arm’s length from Glibs IRL (nothing personal, I have my reasons) but if it’s real I’d say to her. Get in a car and leave. If you don’t have a car, call an Uber. If you can’t call an Uber, go to a neighbor and say you’re in fear of your life. These are not altogether difficult things to do if you’re truly in such a pickle as is claimed. The fact that it’s been several weeks/months with no movement in that direction and continued semi-coherent, cryptic posts finally concluding with an ask for money leads me to think it’s fiction and a grift.

      • Threedoor

I’ve met some of you monsters in person and it was awesome. Great folks.

Okay, look, people. It’s one thing to be told that you can’t delete several lines in Salesforce by checking a few boxes and hitting delete, then forgetting and doing that very thing, only to watch ALL the lines go away.

It’s an entirely another thing to DREAM about deleting a file in YOUR OWN local file directory independent of Salesforce, and then every case in Salesforce vanishes. I cannot even.

    • Tres Cool

      Salesforce is my nemesis.

      • ZWAK, doktor of BRAIN SCIENCE!

You are not wrong, brother. Shitforce is evil.

      • Tres Cool

Next for me is Workday. And then some genius decided that the excel sheet we used for our weekly schedule just wasnt adequate, so the company bought a license for this POS called ScheduleIt. Which behaves just like the excel sheet we’d been using.
I’m going to guess that some hot-shot higher up has a brother-in-law that works for ScheduleIt and needed someone to buy his crappy software.

      • Mojeaux

I can see the point of Salesforce. I even like it. It suits the way my brain thinks. HOWEVER, either its functionality is stunted or the dude who configures it doesn’t know how a) it’s being used or b) how to configure how it needs to be to be useful.

We are having to go back and forth between Outlook (flags and tags 🙄) and Salesforce, and some emails can’t be sent from Salesforce to *a different person for the same case* so you have to do it from Outlook and then that syncs with Salesforce and becomes another case and all of a sudden, you’ve got 2-4 cases for one Issue and merging borks the entire Issue.

And then add on top of that there are 3 of us managing one Outlook account and it is VERY busy. Things get missed. Toes get stepped on. People forget to stake their claim on any particular Issue.

I’ve decided to get that cert because yeah, I can see it working for me, if it’s configured correctly.

      • Don escaped Memphis

        excel sheet we’d been using
anything too complex for Excel is just mental masturbation: angels on a pinhead stuff

        dude who configures it

configuration is everything, and software has the general sales problem: how to help someone in spite of the crappy answers and descriptions they have provided

      • ZWAK, doktor of BRAIN SCIENCE!

I hate salesforce because I both was a good proactive manager and when I did do sales, my numbers were good and I don’t need to be micromanaged. I know some people do, but that is were being a good proactive manager comes in. You should be talking to your employees, seeing what they need, what are the blockages to getting the best out of them, and then letting them go. If they want to use it for personal management, go for it. But I don’t want to know what you are doing in 15 minute intervals.

I hate 360’s for the same reason. Either my workers are doing good, or they are already on a PEP and being managed out.

      • Mojeaux

We’re customer service (very niche customer service, tho) and it’s extremely fast-paced because there are 3 of us (supposed to be 2) for hundreds of clients.

We are required to use SF for metrics and that is all, which…

Now that I think about it, the more closed cases the better for our numbers. My boss is like, they all have to be closed by the end of the day. We get no credit for “in progress.” So yeah. There’s that.

      • Mojeaux

        @RCDean

        configuration is everything

Exactly. This is my first W2 job in 23 years, and I’m used to finding software and utilities I need to solve a problem.

The CTO and I have already gone a few rounds because I had to wait 10 days for software to do my job, so I just zipped it on over to my computer, did the thing, and zipped it back to myself. This was such a no-no that legal had to get involved. When I reminded them that I had been asking for 10 days for this and I am a problem-solver who solved the problem because this is my business, the only thing he could do was growl at me and tell me NEVER to do that again because it was his department’s fuckup because I was just a contractor (at the time) and thus, unimportant.

Anyway, I’ve asked for several utilities. All but one got denied, but that one, he gave me a vastly inferior product, so I’m still pissy. He is also not happy that I can find ways to set settings that should not be set, but hey. Disconfiguration pisses me right the hell off.

Dude, just give me total access to my computer and we’ll all be happier.

Years ago our local talk radio had Norm Macdonald on. Of course he trolled the host (Scott Sloan). It was during the ‘killer clown’ craze and the exchange went something like:

Host: “Norm what do you think of these people dressing up as clowns to scare the hell out of people?”
Norm: “Wait- they’re dressed up as clowns?”
Host: “Yes. And wielding weapons and scaring people.”
Norm: “Oh. So they’re not actual clowns?”

What kind of rats are we talking about?

Boise’s “Pied Piper” is taking on Ada County’s rat problem with a keyboard, not a flute. Robin Hadder is the coder behind Treasure Valley Pied Piper, a website committed to mapping Ada County’s escalating rat infestation through “civic science,” logging and verifying crowd-sourced sightings to map the pests’ spread across the region.

Hadder has only seen one rat in her hometown of Boise — a nest squarely in the mid-engine of her Porsche Boxster. But since launching the website a couple of months ago, she has helped validate some 540 more sightings, with more mapping — and features — yet to come.

    ——-

A self-proclaimed “science geek,” Hadder thought the rat infestation would be “an interesting intellectual problem to solve.” “I just wanted to be community-minded,” she said.

    Of course you did.

Where are the photos? Are talking Norway rats or pack rats or something else? Great journalisming, kids.

    • Threedoor

      Either pack rats or Californians.

    Brown shirts, ho

An eastern German region was voting Sunday in an election that could bring to power the first far-right state government in the nation’s post-World War II history.

The vote for the state legislature in Saxony-Anhalt, a region of 2.1 million people west of Berlin, has gained outsized prominence because it represents the best chance yet of a governor’s post for the far-right, anti-migration Alternative for Germany, or AfD.

That would be the biggest prize in the party’s 13-year history, at a time of widespread discontent with an unpopular national government that has yet to persuade voters it can get the country’s sluggish economy moving. It would be at least a symbolic blow to Chancellor Friedrich Merz, whose center-right party has led Saxony-Anhalt for 24 years.

Don’t do it, Germany. Stick with the proven losers. Anything is better than national pride.

    • rhywun

widespread discontent with an unpopular national government

      I can’t imagine why.

It’s almost like the damaged people have had enough of the… uh… “center-right”. 🙄

Just to be clear – are we saying Toxteth O’Grady is possibly a mythical libertarian woman?

    • Mojeaux

No. We are saying the real ToG IS a mythical libertarian woman whose identity has now likely been stolen by Yusef/Bob.

      • Tres Cool

        …allegedly

  21. The Late P Brooks

Despite consistently strong support, though, its chances of taking power are uncertain even if it finishes well ahead of its opponents.

On Sunday, AfD hopes to win an absolute majority in the state legislature. That would overcome the so-called “firewall” of mainstream parties’ refusal to work with AfD, whose regional branch is one of several classified by the domestic intelligence agency as a proven right-wing extremist group. AfD vehemently rejects accusations of extremism.

Democracy is too important to be run by just anybody. We can’t allow the wrong people to have a say.

    • rhywun

If the “far-right” wins despite the entire weight of elite government and society arrayed against them I will LMFAO. We think our pols are out of touch in the US… Germany says “hold my beer” when it comes to out of touch.

      • Common Tater

Garden variety conservative from 20 years is “far right” now, and “far right is “fascist”.

      • rhywun

Yup. It’s all buzzwords and FUD from the MSM. The more running-scared they get the less sense their drivel makes.

  22. The Late P Brooks

Merz said an AfD government would be an economic own-goal. “If there were to be an absolute majority for a right-wing populist party next Monday, then international investors will think three times about whether they still invest in Saxony-Anhalt,” he said.

    You’ll always have Volkswagen.

“It’s hard to know what was in the mind of the lone holdout juror, the one who wanted to find Clancy guilty of being in her right mind when she killed her children even as he realized the prosecution has not proven its case. I can certainly speculate: Some people want a simple story of good and evil. Some people need a punitive outcome to a horrific event, no matter actual fault or responsibility. Some people just want women punished.”

The legal battle has dominated national headlines, with even President Trump weighing in to respond to news of the mistrial.

“It’s a shame. It’s a horrible tragedy,” Trump said when asked about the case during an executive order signing ceremony in the Oval Office. “She did a horrible, horrible thing.”

“I guess they’re going to go through another trial. It’s too bad,” he concluded.

Trump just can’t help himself. He’s always saying the cruelest and most inflammatory things.

OT did you see I Do Cars tear down of a replacement Toyota turbo V6?

Factory replacement lasted 6 months. Destroyed main bearing. Comments suggest undersize mains or block is distorting or both. I’m coming around to that as the debris story seems less and less likely.

It’s nuts. At this point I don’t think I’d buy anything with that motor.

“The More Dysgenic, the Better”: Beatrice Adler-Bolton Says the Left Must Give Up the “Fantasy of Being Fitter Than the Fascists”

At Socialism 2026, Adler-Bolton argues that “fitness is a measure of relative disposability under capitalism” and says the goal should not be to become “more useful to the ruling order.”

She says the left should not try to beat fascists “at their own game” by becoming “fitter, more eugenic.”

“In fact, the more dysgenic, the better, I think.”

She closes by arguing that revolution is not “a contest between optimized and properly prepared bodies” and that the very idea is itself fascist.”

Communists need the fat stores to survive the famine after they take control. Fascists need to be fit to survive the hopeless war their leaders will start to distract from the fact that their everything for the State economic policies are making everyone starve. Two solutions to the same problem! Of course actually avoiding the problem by leaving people free to follow their own pursuits is a non-starter.

OT: Completed my first month of HVAC installation work. It’s physically challenging in ways that surprised me, but I’ve learned a ton and can’t wait to finish training and get in my own van. Love it so far. And with a few years of experience and some more certifications, there are jobs in that field with excellent pay (BAS/controls, test and balance, etc.) that are more doable as you get older. I plan to keep exercising and eating healthy the rest of my life, but it’s probably no fun crawling through attics and lugging condenser units around when you’re 60.

did you see I Do Cars tear down of a replacement Toyota turbo V6?

Yes. That motor was brand spanking new. My theory on why there wasn’t more “anti-seize” distributed through the oiling system: they shortened the pickup tube on the oil pump to keep from pulling the sludge off the bottom of the pan.

    • Sensei
