Saturday Morning Pre-Football Links

Despite her sentimental attachment to The Bills, Prime is not much of a fan of watching football. This is one of her very few shortcomings as a human. Part of this is that even after 67 years on this planet, the majority of them spent in pro football cities (Buffalo and Boston), she has never, even, not even once been to an actual live game. Thanks to the annual generosity of our own Nephilium, we are about to correct this. And what better way to be initiated into the cult of watching 50 or so hyperpituitary multi-millionaires slamming into one another at high speeds than experiencing Real Football at the one and only House of Pain. OK, maybe tailgating in Green Bay, but still, this is a close second and much more reachable. Best yet, the seats are in the Dawg Pound. And her boyfriend will be wearing the colors of the visiting team. Hilarity will ensue.

And today’s include a woman who could keep up with the Joneses; the other female lead in The Devil and Miss Jones; the William Henry Harrison of popes; a guy who invented the most iconic character of the 20th century; a guy who was a step ahead of Joe DiMaggio; a guy who was the perfect “moody and sensitive” gay stereotype; a guy who, like Fred Willard, managed to transcend his material and always be funny; an incredible guitarist who was patient and helpful with questions from an untalented teenage me; a holy gimmick act; the Patron Saint of Butte, Montana; a ridiculously talented and versatile musician and actor; Jeff Garlin’s spirit animal; the most insightful and brilliant comedian of my lifetime; the most insightful and brilliant film and TV auteur and voice actor of my lifetime; and a big fan of the New York subway system.

And I am a big fan of Links.

Here’s an idea: just eliminate the position and attendant staff.

And you know that if this had happened in New York or California, the guy who killed the shooter would have been arrested, tried, and jailed.

“Now he can kill Jews instead of politicians. Fair.”

So much noise and in the end, exactly nothing will happen.

Yes, this is clearly the issue driving US voters.

Aim better next time.

Wait, how does this “apartheid” thing work?

It seemed like a great concept. How could it possibly fail? Shocking.

I’ve seen this movie. Wait for Reptilicus to spawn.

A perfect “wet streets cause rain” article. The writer is likely neither smart nor cynical.

Here’s two of the absolutely finest British electric blues players just pickin’ and grinnin’. So absolutely wonderful.

Amara, 41, undertook a process to deradicalize while incarcerated and has used his day parole “for its intended rehabilitative purpose,” demonstrating “positive change, both in attitude and in behaviour.”

I know the day is young but I doubt I will read anything stupider today. Oh, Canada. 🙄

    • Chafed

Perhaps not but I think we will be reading about this guy again. Authorities will be taken by surprise when he is found to have participated in another Islamist terrorist plot. Even more shocking will be the radical sermons his imam delivered that went unnoticed by authorities.

    Happy birthday Bernie Goetz!

    • DEG

That’s a good one except he was born in November.

Most Americans feel unease or alarm about the climate crisis and, in both red and blue states, want to know how political leaders are going to fix it.

    🤣😂

It is amazing their readership is even able to crawl out from under the covers every day.

Aren’t both parties owned by tech bribes? Is there anything in the world less environmently friendly than data centers?

      • UnCivilServant

A solar farm. Acres of windmills and their broken fiberglass vanes. A Chinese factory. An Indian Shipbreaking yard. California wildfire mismanagement. Moai Contruction.

      • (((Jarflax

Lots of things are less environmentally friendly than a building with a bunch of servers in it. The fear mongering about data centers is almost as stupid at this point as the idea that AI is going to usher in a post scarcity world. They are just server farms, like the ones that host everything from this site to the movies our alien friend streams for us.

      • Drake

They take vast quantities of power and water. Puts out heat and noise. Produce nothing useful.

      • UnCivilServant

Those newfangled technologies. What use have they ever been.

      • Chafed

@Drake I don’t know what you read/watch/listen but your outlook has gotten unbelievably bleak.

      • Drake

Explain to me the benefits of a data center in the neighborhood.

      • Chafed

Lower property taxes. See, for example, Loudon County, Virginia.

Not to be confused with The Devil in Miss Jones.

Some years back TCM’s Silent Sunday Nights ran a really interesting anti-war film from the wake of the Great War called Behind the Door. On a movie board talking about upcoming films on TCM, I joked, “No mention of whether the door is green.”

Some people didn’t seem to get it.

I admit it. That’s exactly what I did.

United States Representative Jamie Raskin, a Democrat from Maryland, described the reported attack on Levine as “unconscionable and a moment of reckoning for the world.”

Too local. Why is this of any concern to a United States Representative?

    • (((Jarflax

Because it allows them to blame the (((Joos)))

      • Chafed

Indeed. And it’s the least curious/skeptical people who do it.

Israel’s Arab citizens, who make up about 20 percent of the population and are plagued by violent crime and discriminatory housing policies.

That kind of accusation might warrant some evidence to readers not steeped in NYT’s supreme knowledge of everything Israel.

The evil Zionist landlords won’t let them conduct their cultural practice of making bombs and strapping them to their wives and kids.

      • rhywun

I suspect they’re playing the usual DemSoc game where “unequal outcome” is ipso facto evidence of “systemic racism” or some such bullshit.

      • Ted S.

Look up “unrecognized Bedouin villages”, although most of the hits have a decided political stance.

It’s partly the tragedy of “nomadic community meets government that wants people settled in towns” going back to Ottoman times: Bedouins didn’t want to make land claims since they’d then be taxed with no services provided. The other part is that latter-day governments are reluctant to regularize things they see as part of squatting since they have an interest in not encouraging more of it.

      • Ted S.

It should be pointed out that the Bedouins were there long before the Israelis realized the land was strategically important.

      • UnCivilServant

Just because people stopped caring about it after the Romans displaced the Nabateans doesn’t mean the Bedouins can just claim to have lived there since time immemorial – Even if they have.

      • rhywun

TBH, I couldn’t care less. It is certainly not up to the level of hysteria the Democrats are going to cosplay over it.

      • Chafed

        Thunderous applause for UCS’s links.

    • Old Man With Candy

The violence part is unquestionably true. Arab gangs are just as vicious and pervasive in those areas as the gangs of, ummm, yoots in urban American areas. And for similar reasons (control of black market goods and services).

  8. Gender Traitor

I enjoy watching pro football on TV and have been to plenty of high school and college games, but never a pro football game. I think I might be inclined to make my first game one played by the St. Louis Battlehawks, as they play at a rather more temperate time of year.

The Stevens County Sheriff’s Office is working with state and federal agencies to identify a large metallic object found in a cornfield in Scott Township.

I mentioned the other day I took my new toy out to the range. Worked great with no malfunctions. The weak part was me who recently returned to the range after a long absence.

On the CZ family of pistols with a hammer and firing pin blocks they use a roll pin that will deform under use and especially when dry fired. I would argue it’s a big weak point of any otherwise very good design. I put through about 200 rounds and probably have 300 rounds dry fired with a snap cap. I pulled the pin out and checked it after my trip the range. Only thing on it was a slight mark, but no noticeable wear.

Now this guy OTH – CZ P07 firing pin retaining pin.

Say what you want about plastic pistols, but I remain a big fan of my Glock 21. I just bought a 43x while I was at the range. This being NJ and all despite having all the required paperwork I’m still going to have to return to pick it up next week when the NJ NICS finally completes.
