Thursday Afternoon Soggy Links

by | Oct 8, 2026 | Daily Links, Florida | 73 comments

Sorry, its been raining here for days. And several more to go. Everything’s soggy including the links. Drought or downpour, that’s the way here. I mean, the retards who run the water districts are still insisting that we are in drought conditions and passed water restrictions through March 2027. We’ve received a year’s worth of rain in 3 months with more to come. But its really important that you only fill up your pool between 4 and 8 am on YOUR day. Retards.

Florida Man surprised to find out that sex offenders are regular felons who can’t vote.

The only way to get your hand blown off with a stun grenade is to be holding one when it goes off. I’m sure this French “boy” was just minding his own business in the banlieue when he happened to come across a stun grenade and picked it up.

So ape brains are the product of a virus?

Looks like another California company will be rehoming.

My 12 year old posited that since a lot of his classmates were out, they must have “that new mosquito virus“. Because flu season isn’t a thing?

Nephilium put this in my head the other day, and I’m sharing with all of you to get rid of the earworm

Brett L

Brett set out to find America, the real America, the America of strip malls and serial killers, of butthole waxing and kelp smoothies, of cocaine and maggots. He sought it in the most American part of America—Florida: swamp gas and fever dreams, where love arrives on a rickety boat and leaves when it doesn't have the money for its fourth abortion. Oh, where has Brett gone? He’s drinking at the neck of America’s wang, chewing its foreskin and working its shaft. Brett is becoming legend. Brett can never die. Brett can never die. Brett is America, facedown in his own patriotic puke: the red his blood, the white his stomach lining, and the cold, cold blue his gas station slushie, spiked with coconut rum and tetracycline.

Most people with dengue will not have symptoms or only have mild ones, and usually will feel better in about a week. But for others, dengue can progress to life-threatening conditions,

    Here we go again.

I get mosquito bites every day. BFD.

I’ve probably had that and a dozen other exotic mosquito-borne diseases.

Maybe they should mandate mosquito masks.

One of the clients I support, who travels extensively in the third world, has had Dengue twice. I’ve also had to replace his phone twice, once because he lost it in a punch-up with two asshole street robbers in Cairo, and once because he carelessly went to take a shower while fully dressed, with his phone in his pocket.

I keep hoping that he’ll write his autobiography.

Giant steaming platter of dog puke

The drinking, drugging and sexual assault culture on American college campuses is once again attracting national attention.

A former Cornell University student filed a civil lawsuit in September 2026 alleging that seven Chi Phi fraternity members gang-raped her when she was a sophomore at the school two year earlier.

The apparent failure of institutions she reached out to for help has become an important part of the story.

As a researcher who studies domestic and sexual violence – and as a college professor who works with students every day – the unfolding narrative about the so-called “Cornell 7” has weighed on me.

    Und so weiter.

Another person who “knows” what happened.

My advice: Film all sexual encounters, preferably with live observers present.

    • R.J.

      Yeah. Get consent on film.

    • rhywun

She thought Cornell would have her back after she chose to ride that train.

    • Rat on a train

      Did you bring protection?
      Yes, multiple cameras and witnesses.

    • Nephilium

Right. Close all the colleges. It’s the only way to be safe.

Everybody down there must be ecstatic to finally have a hurricane to fret about.

  5. The Late P Brooks

The plaintiff’s theory is narrower and more aggressive: if a company designs and markets filament for what California considers illegal gun making, that marketing turns the spool into a regulated precursor part. Even if the company doesn’t directly advertise to the gun CAD community.

Heads we win, tails you lose.

    • R.J.

It’s their fault for making high-quality printed plastic.

  6. The Late P Brooks

Only 37.5% of surveyed college students believed campus officials will take seriously sexual assault allegations when physical force or an inability to consent is involved – as was allegedly the case for Jane Doe. Only 7.1% of surveyed students who were assaulted contacted local police.

The thing is chock full of sleight-of-hand and stolen bases like this. The term “sexual violence” (which infuriates me more every time I see it) is a giant stolen base, turning anything from an uninvited touch on the arm to an eyeroll or ill timed snort of derision into some sort of bloody rape fantasy.

    • Brett L

Giving a young woman exactly what she asked for, respecting her boundaries, and having to have the president of the sorority call the president of the fraternity and say “she’s going to do it again if she gets invited to this party” is definitely sexual violence and not women’s liberation.

      • Oy the Billy-Bumbler

Do you have any sources that report those conversations? Google “filters” search results.

  7. Sensei

I’d like to know aside from the evil brown color what makes this brand’s filaments unique.

I just looked at their web site and didn’t see anything proprietary in the kinds of plastics it offers.

  8. The Late P Brooks

Right. Close all the colleges. It’s the only way to be safe.

Exactly. My god, how can we allow the endemic “drinking, drugging and sexual assault culture on American college campuses” to persist? 1 in 5 women are victimized. Or worse.

    It’s shameful.

    • Nephilium

I’ve heard it was 7 out of every 5. Almost makes you wonder why women would want to go to places with such terrible rape statistics.

      • DEG

What is the world coming to? I remember when it was 5 out of every 4.

      • Fourscore

        Wishful thinking?

    Prison guards and poaching

Three men who pleaded guilty to poaching more than 40 bobcats and exporting them to Canada had ties to New Hampshire law enforcement.

At one point, Randy Inman, Sherwood Dubrey Jr., and Sherwood Dubrey Sr. all worked for the New Hampshire Department of Corrections, according to New Hampshire Fish and Game Col. Kevin Jordan.

“The thing that bothered me the most, frankly, these were people involved in law enforcement. That disturbed me,” Jordan said.

    Revaluation time in NH

Homeowners raised concerns at the Board of Mayor and Alderman meeting on Tuesday after receiving letters containing higher property value rates.

“Taxpayers need to know that these are not tax bills,” said Charles Kurfehs, chair of the Manchester Board of Assessors, at the meeting. “With everything coming up to market value in the city, we’re anticipating that the tax rates are going to drop significantly.”

The letters were part of a routine evaluation that the city is required by state law to complete every five years. This year’s revaluation reflects how much property values have changed since the last one.

On the campaign trail in NH

The results were mixed. At one door, a woman who declined to give her name (as did nearly every voter visited that day) said she was voting Republican and supporting President Donald Trump.

“I agree with like pretty much everything that the president has done. I think it’s great,” she said. “And I think it’s really sad that people just hate him instead of looking at what he’s done that’s been for the good of the country.”

One of those haters lived right down the street. Nick, a retired union member who was working in his garage when Justin approached, called himself a Democrat who is “a pretty conservative guy. I’m a middle-of-the-road guy.” But MAGA Republicans are a political bridge too far.

“They’re a bunch of hypocrites,” Nick said. “Isn’t the Republican Party supposed to be conservative and support the rule of law and things like that? The deficit — this president’s putting more money onto our kids than any other president has ever done.”

When Justin reminded him that Trump isn’t on the ballot in November, Nick shot back, “But he’s telling everybody vote like I’m on the ballot!”

    Touché.

And so it goes on the Granite State campaign trail for the candidates, volunteers, and paid staffers knocking on New Hampshire doors.

    Dead thread on EV trucking.

I charge $1.70 a mile. I get on average 9mph between two midrange trucks.
It covers maintenance, fuel, insurance, $30 an hour windshield time and a little profit for me.
Most class 8 trucks are charging 2-2.50 a mile loaded.

Two years ago I looked at a new Kenworth box truck, $160,000 +.

The last of the 900 series class 8 (over the road semi) trucks started around $250,000

The EV trucks are going to be short haul, lot trucks, and in town until they can manage to figure out how to get a 600-700 mile range out of them and a 30 min recharge time.

    • R.J.

Thanks. Now we need real figures on California EV truck operating costs. Everywhere I looked was ratty freaks beaming about how cost effective they were. If they are so cost effective, why the Hell do they need multiple subsidies?

      • Threedoor

Expect to get about 700,000 miles out of a new truck before an in frame engine overhaul.

DEF/DPF are the major causes of failure on newer trucks. And fuel system work on the newer stuff is insane.

I had injectors, some sensors and a high pressure oil pump put in one of my trucks last year. $16,000. Modern big truck would have cost way more. Most of which was labor and had I known I could have done all the work. Shops charge crazy amounts for labor.

      • Sensei

Strictly analytical I know Tesla has really tried to engineer for maintenance cost and uptime on its semis to offset energy costs for TCO.

They aren’t dumb and absolutely understand math, but I’m not sure how they beat physics here.

  16. The Late P Brooks

The EV trucks are going to be short haul, lot trucks, and in town until they can manage to figure out how to get a 600-700 mile range out of them and a 30 min recharge time.

How much freight capacity would be left in a truck capable of a 500 mile trip, after accounting for the weight of batteries? Enough to make it worth pulling out of the gate?

    I crack myself up.

    • Fourscore

Put the batteries in a trailer with a generator to keep them fully charged.

      • Threedoor

A hybrid truck with a front electric drive axle would be decent and more efficient than a diesel truck.

        Better grade pulling.
        Faster acceleration off a stop.
        Regen braking.
        All wheel drive.

      • Threedoor

And you could use the battery pack overnight to run the AC, heater, or even a refer trailer. Refer trailers are ran by a small 3 cylinder diesel engine with a 50-60 gallon fuel tank slung under the trailer.

Prop up a Tesla car sized battery behind the cab and it wouldn’t even change the length of a truck.

    • Threedoor

The Federal DOT is letting EV trucks have extra weight that normal trucks don’t get. Another 2-3000 pounds I think.

The real range killer will be hills and mountains. In the central flatlands they will be OK when it’s above freezing and cool.

The range will suffer in the west because we have mountain passes that will suck the battaries dry a lot harder than it impacts fuel milage.

      • ZWAK, doktor of BRAIN SCIENCE!

I am guessing they will all be lot mules, for every reason you stated. It just doesn’t pencil out for long haul.

    ***
In the early years of the 1980-1988 war with Iraq, a pond with several sections was built near an area dedicated to martyrs at the Beheshte Zahra graveyard in Tehran. Its fountain spurted blood. It became known as the “Pond of Blood.” Obviously, it was not actual blood but only red coloring mixed in the water.

The fame of this pond even reached overseas, to the point that foreign journalists would strive to take pictures of it.

Once, the Iranian daily“Etelaat” published a special issue about the war with a picture of the fountain on the cover, with a caption consisting of a saying by Imam Khomeini: “All in all, our revolution was a blessing.”

The publication of that picture with that caption provoked the rage of the Hizbullahi fellows and protests began. The forces of the Revolutionary Guards were sent to the newspaper’s offices to arrest and punish those behind the publication. In the end, the matter was solved by the dismissal of a few “Etelaat” employees and an apology from the head of the newspaper.

    Pearl Harbor attack footage

    https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tGRoq6b4TLI

The parts from the Japanese perspective make sense, but the bit starting at the 1:56 mark looks like a scene from an action movie rather than the work of a combat cameraman. It’s like the cameras were staged in advance. And the American carriers were away from the harbor during the attack.

The US broke some Japanese codes in the 1920s which gave them an advantage in negotiating a naval treaty in 1922. The American negotiators knew in advance what limits the Japanese would accept.

    https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Japanese_naval_codes

Putting it all together, I’m certain FDR knew the attack was coming and chose to sacrifice some battleships in order to save the carriers and have a reason to declare war on Japan.

Churchill famously chose not to evacuate Coventry when he knew in advance it would be bombed so as not to alert the Germans that the British had broken some of their codes.
