Frankenhooker

Welcome to the second Thursday in October, where every Thursday is Halloween! Tonight I am showing one of my beloved films, Frankenhooker. I got to see this in the theater, apparently I was one of ten people who saw it during the theatrical run. It barely cleared $200K, on a budget of over $2M. Once it hit the mom and pop video stores though, it became a cult classic. I remember it even had a rental VHS box with a little button you could push that said the classic line “Wanna date?”

So what is this movie about? Tonight we turn to the review posted by claudio_carvalho on IMDB for an explanation:

In New Jersey, Jeffrey (James Lorinz) is a talented inventor in love with his bride-to-be Elizabeth (Patty Mullen). During a barbecue to celebrate the birthday of Elizabeth´s father, she activates a remote controlled lawnmower that Jeffrey built for his father-in-law. However she stays in front of the device and her body is cut into pieces. Jeffrey studies how to bring Elizabeth back to life and realizes that he will need body parts. He drives to New York to get the necessary parts from prostitutes but his experiment loses control and he blows-up several women with an exploding crack he had developed. Now he has the necessary parts to build his fiancée back, but when Elizabeth flees from his laboratory, Jeffrey has problems with the pimp Zorro (Joseph Gonzalez) that lost his girls.

The cult “Frankenhooker” is one of the best black-comedies ever made. The plot is a grotesque joke with “Frankenstein”, but the result is hilarious. James Lorinz and Patty Mullen steal the film with cynical and lovely performances. My vote is seven.

Thank you Claudio! And now, some trivia!

The scene where Jeffrey goes driving looking for ladies of the night to provide body parts was filmed in what is now Tribeca. It was a much different place then though, and they got the shots from the open door of a moving van. The women featured were real hookers, who are in SAG now. –IMDB

Hahahahaha! Welcome to the union, girls! Chances are your wages just went down. Oh, and don’t forget those union dues…

More Trivia! Our version tonight is the Troma version, which is the full 1 hour 25 minutes. Somewhere out there is a version from Synapse Films that adds in another minute and 25 seconds of exploding hookers. I did look for it, I know how this sausage party loves its exploding hookers. I did not succeed.

So watch! Or don’t! Everything is voluntary! Next week we will watch Re-Animator together!

I hope everyone is enjoying cooler weather. Here in Texas, it hit October 1st and immediately started raining every day, like I live in a simulation or something.

Bonus

It’s a cartooooooon!

    Beautiful.

Diving in. This will be the second time I’ve seen this movie. I remember it being fun.

      That is absolutely beautiful.

It’s available! We have an action packed November and December. But I can fit it in early next year. I will add it to the list for you.

I bet. Tribeca is now the most expensive neighborhood in Manhattan – full of Hollywood glitterati. Even all the tranny hookers I remember from slightly north of there in the early aughts are long gone now.

    • Evan from Evansville

Do you scope for the good ones? The paparazzi’d would want to be with a trans person for the best public image. They don’t want an ugly one. [REDACTED] (You know the really hot trannies, either direction, are there. You should investigate with your peepers.🧐 )

      • rhywun

        Pass.

      • Common Tater

NYC had “newspapers” for whatever kind of hooker back then.

    • Chafed

Really? I thought they would be popular with the Hollywood set.

  5. Aloysious: Evil Dark Lord of Wonderful Smooches

I don’t want anybody girding either of my loins. No touches.

Except Samantha Fish. That chan-teus-e can gird both my loins.

  6. Aloysious: Evil Dark Lord of Wonderful Smooches

    That is one big cast.

Fun fact, IMDB says that Skeleton, who plays the skeleton on stairs part, is uncredited.

Well, I commented on the astrology post on Sunday that the only thing missing was birth and death. Wouldn’t you know, my brother passed this morning. I got the news while driving to our VA place. So I am sitting in the trailer with the dogs, drinking. With our family history, 76 ain’t bad.

    • Common Tater

      Sorry for your loss 🙁

    • Evan from Evansville

Woah. My condolences as well and RIP. I know little, but 76 is a really good run.

    • Aloysious: Evil Dark Lord of Wonderful Smooches

Just saw this. My condolences and best regards.

You’re drinking with dogs, so you’re all good?

    • Fourscore

Sad to hear the news, JI. Good that you have the dogs, they will listen and seem to understand.

      • juris imprudent

Turns out there was a bottle of Glenlivet 14 stashed in the trailer. Not hitting it too hard, I’ve got lots to do tomorrow. Dogs are fine company.

    • Threedoor

      Sorry to hear that.

    • DrOtto

Condolences. My girlfriend in high school had a step-father that told me he wanted to go at 75. Old enough to have enjoyed life, but not so old as to have worn out your welcome.

      • kinnath

told me he wanted to go at 75

        Hell no.

        Looking for triple digits here.

    • Chafed

I’m sorry JI. My condolences to you and your family.

    • Gender Traitor

Oh, dear! I’m so sorry, JI!

  8. rhywun

I wanted to see if it was actually filmed in Ho-Ho-Kus but IMDb only offers “New Jersey”. 🙄

    Still gonzo, maybe.

    • Common Tater

      Is that a real town?

      • rhywun

        Yes.

      • Evan from Evansville

Fantastic question. I’m guessing a name made for the film. Too perfect.

      • Common Tater

Holy shit, it’s actually spelled that way.

        WTF, NJ?

    • Evan from Evansville

Okay. “Ho-Ho-Kus” – Flag on the field. They’re taking two holidays with their little fun. Ho ho ho and ‘hocus (pocus)’ has gotta be a marketing gimmick from some time back, some Macy’s or similar big thingy in the ’50s.

I apologize in advance to the Hohockus or similar family, if you exist. And are watching. (Hmm) If real. your name is rad. Well played.

      • rhywun

        Nope. It’s some Indian name.

      • Threedoor

        Appropriating the English language.

Indian names should have to be written in their native writing.

    • Evan from Evansville

Yep. Flag BACK on the Field, but a new one. That BOROUGH is full of itself: “As of the 2000 census, Ho-Ho-Kus was the 15th-wealthiest community in New Jersey… The borough’s median household income was $165,827 in 2013.In 2011, New Jersey Monthly magazine named Ho-Ho-Kus the best place to live in the state of New Jersey.

Some earned: “Established in 1790, The Ho-Ho-Kus Inn was once known as The Mansion House and consists of five rooms: Chateau, Crystal, Hermitage, Tap, and Zabriskie.” Cool, but ya wealthy fancy folk.

See also: ‘The Hermitage, located in Ho-Ho-Kus is a fourteen-room Gothic Revival house museum built in 1847–48 from designs by William H. Ranlett for Elijah Rosencrantz, Jr. Members of the Rosencrantz family owned The Hermitage estate from 1807 to 1970. The site was designated a National Historic Landmark for the excellence of its architecture and added to National Register of Historic Places in 1970.’

Hahahaha! – There were 1,462 housing units The racial makeup was 92.03% (3,753) White, 0.22% (9) Black or African American, 0.07% (3) Native American, 5.79% (236) Asian, 0.00% (0). Teehee! I stupidly first thought the name was ‘Asian.’ Korean bartender at “Santa Claus” in Daejeon was great, Mr. Ho. Common enough.
      —
      I’m easily pleased.

  9. Aloysious: Evil Dark Lord of Wonderful Smooches

In fact, there is a handful of parts that are listed as uncredited. How can you not credit the actor playing john on stairs, or pimp?

    I’m slightly miffed for them.

    • R.J.

Some independent films were really diligent about giving screen credit. Others just shot film out of a van.

      • Aloysious: Evil Dark Lord of Wonderful Smooches

Yeah, but pimps are important, dammit.

For example, Max Ryan played the pimp in Kiss of the Dragon.

        Small part, but very important.

The story wouldn’t be the same without a greasy dirt bag getting beat up by Jet Li.

  10. R.J.

Some of the good prosthetic limbs got stolen from the film so they had to resort to mannequin parts in some scenes.

The emotional overlap between fantasy and pornography is interesting.

The intended audience for A Princess of Mars and the other John Carter books was teen boys. They read it a think “wow, I wish I was a 6-foot-tall badass killing monsters and aliens and having hot women like me!”

And then there’s the other end. Having read a plot summary of Jane Eyre, I can see why it is incredibly popular in North Korea: hunger, death, misery, and very little hope.

And then there are the umpteen novels about middle-aged men having unsatisfying love affairs.

I read a book called something like “1,000 books to read before you die”. Just one love triangle after another.

    Blessed are the poor?

Sell everything you have and give it to the poor?

Take nothing for the journey but the staff?

    Store your treasure in heaven?

I agree Jesus wasn’t a socialist, but he clearly believed that it was bad to be rich or to want to be rich.

    • Evan from Evansville

One way or another, social primates being such, (nearly) every fantasy has a sexual element to it. If it isn’t, the *lack* of it represents tension itself, becomes a ‘theme’ or reveals character. Everything we do, one way or another, is attached to it.

St Francis of Assisi, along with many other monks past and present, did their best to model their lives on Christ.

        ***
Indulged by his parents, Francis lived a high-spirited life, typical of a wealthy young man.[8] As a youth, he became a devotee of troubadours and was fascinated with all things Transalpine.[10] Francis was handsome, witty, gallant and delighted in fine clothes.[15] He spent money lavishly.[15] Although many hagiographers remark about Francis’ bright clothing, rich friends, and love of pleasures,[14] his displays of disillusionment toward the world that surrounded Francis came fairly early in his life, as is shown in the “story of the beggar”. In this account, Francis was selling cloth and velvet in the marketplace on behalf of his father when a beggar came to him and asked for alms. At the end of his business deal, Francis abandoned his wares and ran after the beggar. When he found him, Francis gave the man everything he had in his purse. Francis’ friends mocked him for his charity while his father scolded him in rage.[16]

Around 1202, Francis joined a military expedition against Perugia and was taken as a prisoner at Collestrada. He spent a year as a captive,[17] during which an illness caused Francis to re-evaluate his life. However, upon his return to Assisi in 1203, Francis returned to his carefree life. Two years later, Francis left for Apulia to enlist in the army of Walter III, Count of Brienne. A strange vision[vague] made him return to Assisi and lose interest in worldly life.[8]

Ignatius Loyola, founder of the Jesuits, turned to religion after his leg got blown off by a cannonball when he was a mercenary.

        ***
On May 20, 1521, during the Battle of Pamplona, Ignatius Loyola, then a soldier, was struck by a cannonball that shattered his right leg and seriously injured his left. The wound left him with a lifelong limp. While recovering in a Basque farmhouse, he was unable to read the chivalric romances he desired. Instead, he was given The Life of Christ by Rudolph of Saxony and Flowers of the Saints in Spanish. These readings sparked a deep interest in Christian life and led to his conversion, setting him on the path to founding the Society of Jesus (the Jesuits)

“Employees at the Obama Presidential Center in Chicago are unionizing over their working conditions, claiming benefits have been cut and workloads are increasing just four months after the center opened in June. — Some of the complaints suggested the $900 million presidential center — often maligned for resembling the Star Wars Death Star or a huge trash bin — could already be facing financial trouble.”

The unwinding story of the Obama’s Glory-Hole Star *should* be a perfect example to show how hard the Lefty leadership thumbs the noses of their True Believers, Useful Idiots. It’s obviously a slush fund, just like the BLM Trained Marxists who openly took the money and ran to their ocean side mansions. However, no. Simply no *anger,* and nothing will happen until that erupts, which I don’t think even *can* happen without a Dem collapse or Big Event shakes things up.

That monstrosity is the greatest piece of evidence that Obama really is just a fool with a massive ego but a pleasant voice.

Trump is also an egomaniac, but at least his proposed arch is not an eyesore. I saw the Trump whatever in Vegas.
It seemed silly, but it was eye-catching and not offensive. Also, I could at least read the letters on it.

“Gaze upon my works, ye mighty, and despair!”

      • rhywun

Trump likes gaudy historicism, and I’m not entirely opposed. It’s a breath of “fresh” air compared to the crap that architects have been delivering for decades.

Obama is obviously a sucker for trendy starchitect modernist claptrap, because that is the nature of every leftist. They get a thrill from being “transgressive” but the architecture that comes out of it is always ugly and oppressive.

There were artists in communist Yugoslavia who made interesting, nontraditional monuments:

        https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5TKZsnujzk0

        from the comments:

        ***
The philosophy behind these monuments is best described by one of their most famous architects Bogdan Bogdanović: “While I built them, I wished for a world without monuments. It seems that these people are created to suffer, and new generations complicate that suffering further. Monuments to suffering are dishonest, often stupid and comical. They explain nothing and call for nothing. Philosophical and metaphysical ideas don’t need matter. Every monument is a little bit aggressive, and the memories it evokes are always dangerous. The world without history is truly impossible, but we should build a history of intelligence, ideas and sensations, not of overpowering. But it seems that is just my wishful thinking.”

    Today I learned:

    ***
In 1969, Chernova was interviewed by American journalist William Craig, who asked her about her time in the Hares. Confused as to how he got this information, she immediately asked him where he heard that, and Craig replied that Zaitsev had told him. In the book Enemy at the Gates: The Battle for Stalingrad, based on his interviews, Craig wrote:

More than a quarter century after her vendetta against the enemy, the graying sniper still refers to the Germans she killed as “sticks” that she broke. For many years after the war she believed that Vassily Zaitsev, her lover, had died from grievous wounds. Only in 1969, did she learn that he had recovered and married someone else. The news stunned her for she still loved him.[3]

Part of Craig’s book details a love triangle between Commissar Danilov, Chernova and Zaitsev, which has been described as a work of fiction by English military historian Antony Beevor.[2]
