UV Protection Advised

Every once in a while I get a form of writer’s block where I struggle to find an article that I can easily link to a beer I have queued up.

This is my review of Jack’s Abby Copper Legend Oktoberfest Lager:

This is not one of those times*. Today I was given a weirdo on the internet. How weird? Well at first its not that weird. A woman takes up a hobby, and after getting attention from “people” on the “internet” decides to run for senate.

Krentcil, a former Nutley resident who now lives in Boca Raton, said on Tuesday that she officially filed to run for the Senate. She first garnered fame during a viral arrest in 2012, when she took her then-5-year-old daughter to a tanning salon. She also starred in her own extreme makeover television show, “Tan to 10.”

“I know that I am different. And I have suffered for it. But us all being different is what makes this country so amazing and unique,” Krentcil said of her decision.

According to a statement of candidacy filed with the Federal Election Commission, Krentcil intends to challenge Florida incumbent U.S. Sen. Rick Scott in the 2024 election. She will run as a Republican.

Emphasis mine. Thankfully, Florida voters decided Rick Scott looked absurd enough to truly represent them. What? A skeletal white guy suits them.

Anyways, it turns out she now claims ICE nearly detained her because they didn’t realize she was a white woman (TW: TMZ):

Patricia says she told the agents she was a U.S. citizen … but claims the situation nearly escalated to the point where she was going to be handcuffed and taken away, all because of her dark complexion.

She says she had no idea where the agents might have taken her and admits the encounter was terrifying.

In case you are not willing to pursue that last link I am going to leave this one here because it will embed into the article and thereby make it more difficult for you to ignore what this woman actually looks like:

As one of the few brown people here, I think I speak for everyone when I say there is absolutely no problem with ICE detaining this woman.

Copper Legend, get it!?* Okay, I will see myself out.

Last week I reviewed a Hoppy Pilsner from this brewery that I said probably named with the intent to confuse me into thinking it was Oktoberfest and buying it out of mistake. Later that day it published…I found this. Too bad for them I am going to give them the full review process not the Oktoberfest process. Is this true to style? Yes. Is it a good example of the style? Honestly, I was pretty meh on it. At the very least they didn’t leave me simulated skunk, but something else seemed a bit off about the hops so I may as well note that one. In the end, I probably won’t go for this one again, but the Hoppy Pils I reviewed last week is still good. Jack’s Abby Copper Legend Oktoberfest Lager: 2.2/5

Krentcil, a former Nutley resident who now lives in Boca Raton, said on Tuesday that she officially filed to run for the Senate.

I remember her from her NJ days. Glad to see the NYP still keeping tabs!

OT – I’m also going to move this over, just because in some ways I consider this progress in NJ:

I’m a new shooter and I’m looking for a safe, welcoming, beginner-friendly range. I’m a visibly queer woman, so I’d like to avoid ranges with an ultra-conservative culture. I’ve heard good things about Recoil, but I’d love to hear recommendations for the central jersey area. I live near Princeton and would cool with a 45 minute ride tops.
I’ve got to say – one of the most interesting things I’ve found since I’ve gotten back into shooting here in NJ is the left trying to reconcile NJ draconian and discriminatory approach to firearms with their support and voting habits. The towns that drag permitting and CCW licenses the most are the most solidly blue and with the highest minority populations.

My local range is probably 1/3rd non-white and it makes me quite happy to see stereotypes punctured.

Do any of the nontypical shooters ever express any concerns about the state making every possible effort to squelch their Second Amendment rights?

      • Sensei

        Occasionally.

The usual reaction is deflection. They never actually address what the state is doing to their 2A rights. Instead you pick some random thing that right supports that they don’t and argue that.

It’s the usual – so close and after that proceed to miss the point.

    • Ted S.

Why am I not surprised that the queers are into drag permitting?

    • Threedoor

Commentator asked what “visibly queer” is and gets hit with a bot saying “homofobia is not allowed”. Reddit is gay.

      • Sensei

He didn’t even ask. He stated he wasn’t sure what that means.

      • Threedoor

Enough to get dinged on wrong think.

      • Sensei

A bot can’t be too careful!

      • rhywun

Have you any idea how it feels to be a Queerbot living in a Manbot’s Manputer’s world?

      • Threedoor

        I can’t even!

That woman looks crazy. Not elect me to office crazy. I’m mentally unstable crazy.

      There’s a difference?

    • Tres Cool

She’s ‘Tanning Mom’ that was often on Howard Stern. As I recall she was nutty as squirrel shit 15 years ago and I doubt its improved.

However, looking up the name sent me down this NSFW time waster:

    She wears combat boots?

In the end, I probably won’t go for this one again, but the Hoppy Pils I reviewed last week is still good.

Usually I like Jack’s Abby beer, but there are much better Oktoberfest beers out there.

“At the very least they didn’t leave me simulated skunk…”

Oooh, they gave ya the real thing! And it pleases you! (Huh? I thought skunky bear+ was bad. Or it got you *actually* drunk w a typo? Or… Well. many things. Me confuse.)

    • Nephilium

Light struck beer will have a distinct skunk aroma due to interactions between UV light and compounds from hops. As most German beer was shipped over in clear or green bottles, they developed a reputation for being skunky, to the point that when cans were introduced, people said they tasted wrong because they didn’t have that flaw. There have been advances both in UV blocking in clear glass, as well as hop extracts that do not react to UV light, but to at least a full generation of American beer drinkers, if the Heineken doesn’t have a kiss of skunk, it’s wrong.

  10. Evan from Evansville

I went to Oktoberfest in Munich in 2010, my second big trip out of Korea. (Japan was first.) Went back to visit Freiburg, where I studied for a semester in ’08, and also went to Konstanz. On the way back, I spent a few days in Thailand. That was my first year in Asia, and I don’t think I knew how long I’d end up staying there. Busy travel year for a 22-23yo.

Glad I got to go. Wish I had a smartphone back then for pics –a holdout until 2012, I think– but I’m happier it forced full immersion into my travels.

Almost noon. I’m gonna day drink today. Maybe order some Indian food later. Party on!

Meh. I don’t mind that. Most of the flags for taunting are bullshit though.

    Trains!

“It should be much harder to automate something that’s on-road, that has all of these various obstacles coming at it, compared to a fixed-rail system,” said Baruch Feigenbaum, senior managing director of transportation policy at the Reason Foundation, a libertarian think tank that has advocated for transit automation. “I don’t know a nice way to say this, but basically the transit world is where innovation goes to die.”

    Union train drivers gotta eat.

    • rhywun

Automated trains have been a thing for at least a couple decades.

    • Threedoor

They make damn sure there has to be two of them on a freight train but manage to only have one on light rail transit.

I imagine Amtrack has two or three in the cabin.

    • Threedoor

“But David King, an associate professor of urban planning at Arizona State University who has researched automated transportation, said the success rate has to remain perfect to keep the public trust. That’s why the Fort Totten crash and others involving automation put the technology so far behind, he said.
“We allow a certain amount of failure with private industry that we don’t tolerate when the state does it,” said King, citing the several rockets blown up by Elon Musk’s SpaceX — a record he argues would cripple NASA’s budget if it happened in the public sector.”

      You don’t hate professors enough.

      • Threedoor

And seriously in what mad world does a subway in an urban jungle need environmental review?

        Only in California.

      • rhywun

The “environmental review” is mostly just a stalling tactic in order to allow extracting as much graft as possible – often before shooting down a project they never wanted in the first place.

  13. The Late P Brooks

“We allow a certain amount of failure with private industry that we don’t tolerate when the state does it,” said King, citing the several rockets blown up by Elon Musk’s SpaceX

Okay, egghead, now explain automobile crash testing.

    • Nephilium

So… all the stuff I read about the Osprey and other VTOL military craft were really private enterprise failures, not government ones?

While the literacy and math scores tanking are signs of success with government policies?

    • rhywun

I’d love to see death stats on various CCP-funded infrastructure projects. This guy’s head would explode.

    Parasites

Fresh off landing a $25 billion judgment against Meta for misleading the public about its privacy protections, New Mexico Attorney General Raúl Torrez is putting artificial intelligence and Silicon Valley on notice they could be next.

Torrez (D) took a gamble when he opted not to join a $17 billion multistate settlement with Meta in August. But that move paid off with a record-setting ruling against the company Wednesday.

The case relied on consumer protection laws to claim Meta deceived users about its privacy controls, a tactic states are already using against AI developers.

“Anyone in artificial intelligence, people who are building products that they can’t control, people who are making representations in the marketplace about what a product does or doesn’t do, or how it uses or doesn’t use specific types of consumer data, we are going to be watching, and we are prepared to do this again,” Torrez said in an interview. “The message should be received in Silicon Valley that this is not the end, it’s just the beginning.”

That goose? The one laying all those golden eggs? We should kill it and drink its blood.

    • rhywun

I wonder what happens with the rest after the lawyers and various NGOs pocket the first $24.99BB.

  15. The Late P Brooks

Unlike data privacy, AI, online safety or any other tech policies, every state has its own version of consumer protection laws, and the verdict in New Mexico puts together a road map for other states to follow, experts said.

“New Mexico didn’t sue over content or speech, where tech companies have built legal shields. It sued over deception: Meta told users one thing about its privacy practices and did another, and the state had consumer protection laws to meet the moment,” Nidhi Hegde, executive director of the American Economic Liberties Project, an anti-monopoly advocacy group, said in a statement.

How do they define and quantify the “harm” and “damage” from these “violations”?

    • CPRM

It’s nice how he’s looking out for the little guy. All those harmed by Meta will be made whole when New Mexico gives them a nice big check. Right? Right?

  16. The Late P Brooks

“There is a hunger in this country for people that are ready and willing to fight these corporations,” Torrez said. “Even if you lose but you’re doing the right things, you’re fighting the right fight, there’s going to be a high tolerance for that among citizens, among everyday people.”

Fight the good fight. Taxpayer funding is limitless.
