¡Martes por la tarde, enlaces de elecciones!

by | Nov 3, 2026 | Daily Links, I Am Lame | 93 comments

I will keep it brief since it is election day for those of us in the US. Which means people knocking on my door at 8pm asking to remind my wife to vote are going to go back to fucking off at their union job instead of knocking on my fucking door at 8pm during Monday Night Football. That’s worth celebrating, right?*

Yay! Fuck off electioneers!

Here are four links discuss or not. I assume by publishing time some shenanigans will turn up that we will focus on. Otherwise no 30 min rule for today; enjoy the bouncy .gif.

A flying knee kills a fútbolero in Spain.

A mustache signifies a turn to secularism in Arab politics.

Rubio demands Venezuela stop being stupid about their elections. LOL you first, gringo.

Strokes more common among people age 55 and under. This is not a Billy Squier joke.

On that note: here’s Billy Squier!

*Nope. Another stopped by at 10am. I’m going to put a shotgun in the window.

    That gif is…nice

    • kinnath

yes, Mr. Sharpshooter, thank you for the gif.

      That brightened my day.

  2. Urthona

I’m trying to stay off social media, but I was not pleased with my earlier run through.

6 years of Talarico in Texas would be annoying.

      • Urthona

Yeah I mean… 6 years of that guy? Gross.

      • Threedoor

I’m sure James won’t see you as a pickle, but something more enticing.

      • Aloysious: Evil Dark Lord of Wonderful Smooches

A sort of plug, if you will.

  3. Shpip

The results of this effort, published in September in Neurology, showed that stroke rates among 20- to 54-year-olds in the region almost doubled from 1993-94 to 2020, while declining among older people.

Interesting cut-off date. I wonder if strokes among younger people have continued to rise since then, and what (besides general fatassery) could be causing the increase.

    Or would the Post…
    (dons sunglasses)
    …Spike that story.

    • Threedoor

Beginning of 2022 the local AM stations were flooded with stroke and blood clot awarnes PSAs.

It can happen to anyone! Even kids! It’s totally normal for twelve year olds to stroke out. Nothing to see here!

    • mexican sharpshooter

      American are fat asses. #justsayin

    • ZWAK, doktor of BRAIN SCIENCE!

Well, this guy turns 56 in 3 months. So dodged that bullet.

      • slumbrew

        I, too, am immortal now.

It seems like there must be a niche market for appliances that don’t have all that shit.

      • Nephilium

        They’re called vintage.

      • Pat

I’m still rocking a set I bought used on Craigslist in 2013.

      • Threedoor

Reminds me yet again that I need to pull my late 40s Westinghouse out and determine if it was packrats that killed it and if I can fix it.

  4. The Late P Brooks

    6 years of Talarico

Console yourself with the bitter tears of Beto.

    • rhywun

Talarico is gonna be way worse than Beto ever threatened.

      • R.J.

He will be about the same level of crazy. And since he may be in the Senate, the damage is limited.

      • rhywun

I say that because who knows WTF Talarico really believes, he has lied and flip-flopped so many times.

    • creech

Will he be on the 2032 with AOC?

  5. The Late P Brooks

Speaking of things, youtube excreted a video which I did not watch about “the end of smart washing machines”.

We can only hope it’s true, and spreads like wildfire through the appliance-verse.

    • Ownbestenemy

IOT machines need to go away. “Smart” machines that do things like load sensing, etc should stay

      • Urthona

I’m ok with it only if it exclusively sends data about how to really fix my skidmarks in future updates.

      • Nephilium

Probably more that they want the money for SELLING the data than the data itself.

    • Threedoor

      But can they play Doom?

  6. kinnath

At least I cannot succumb to a stroke before the age of 55.

  7. Pat

people knocking on my door at 8pm asking to remind my wife to vote

I’ve never actually had a political canvasser visit me, either in NV or here in TX. Vero Fiber, AT&T, and the Mormon church have sent envoys though.

    • Sean

I can’t recall that being a thing locally.

    • Threedoor

Mormons once and Seventh day once.

Kids trying to sell candy bars decades ago and coupon booklets more recently.

    • Shpip

I’ve had exactly one political canvasser in thirty years — for a very ambitious yet thoroughly uncharismatic housewife who got thumped in the R primary. Twice. She finally got the message and is now some local republican committeewoman.

However, I regularly get some cult members who try to convert me into worshiping a weird shade of blue.

      I’ve come to loathe cyantologists.

      • Aloysious: Evil Dark Lord of Wonderful Smooches

        *insert LeAnn Rimes singing ‘Blue’*

    • mexican sharpshooter

I got 4 in the last week, and 6 since August which is when AZ holds the primary.

Because Shpip’s Guadalcanal story reminded me of this:

We did a ceremony once for a retired Marine that had been at Guadalcanal and Pelilu if I remember correctly.

I was his liaison, so I went to meet him in his old folks home and we talked for a long time.

He had a lot of stories about boot camp and his infantry training.

He also talked about lugging his BAR, which since he was a tiny dude, would have been a chore.

He never once talked about anything that happened on the islands.

The ceremony was to give him his Purple Heart and a Bronze Star because of some paperwork snafu.

He had pictures from where they gave it to him in the hospital, but never received his commendations.

I don’t remember exactly what the citation said now, but I remember thinking “Holy Shit!” when they read it.

He died a couple months later from lung cancer, but he told me that we gave him one of the best days of his life.

    • Sensei

      Nice story!

One of the Brothers at my HS was a belly gunner. He never mentioned his service once.

    • CatchTheCarp

The battle for Guadalcanal is one of my favorites to study. New books are still being written about the battle – one on my list is Guadalcanal’s Longest Fight: The Pivotal Battles of the Matanikau Front by Dave Holland. Dave Holland is the same person who operates the fantastic youtube channel Guadalcanal – Walking a Battlefield. Check it out sometime. In Mr. Holland’s opinion Paige’s medal of honor action is the most epic of all the medal of honor’s awarded at Guadalcanal, surpassing even John Baslione’s MOH action.

  10. The Other Kevin

Hey Glibs, I have been sparse here lately but I hope you are all doing well and are successfully avoiding election coverage.

    • Gender Traitor

Hope all is well with you and yours!

    • ron73440

Hey Glibs, I have been sparse here lately but I hope you are all doing well and are successfully avoiding election coverage.

I was until you mentioned it.

Hope you’re doing alright with the gym and your concussion.

Did you find a car yet?

      • The Other Kevin

I have many things going on. I played hockey in Utah, then we went to Disney for a week (which was about the worst of my many, many Disney trips). I came back from Disney with a nasty virus that’s still hanging on. Tomorrow I got to Vegas for more hockey, then Monday I give a deposition for my lawsuit.

And since you asked, we now have a court appointed mediator, and a deadline for this all to be over. Unfortunately that’s in April, so once again opposing counsel can speed this along or take it slow. And then I will get a car.

      • Threedoor

That’s insane on the car crash. What a damn mess.

      • Sensei

They will drag it out as long as possible.

      • The Other Kevin

It is a damn mess. I had my 1-year crashiversary while I was in Disney. We took a Lyft, and it happened to be a Honda Civic. That was a bit unnerving.

I have the police report now, one paragraph stating I was slowed or stopped for traffic and the other guy hit me, caused major damage, then my car spun and I had more damage. All accurate. He was cited for no insurance and not slowing or stopping for traffic. The cops have the dash cam video. This is all very simple, but hey, why not keep dragging this out and causing me more grief?

      • Sensei

Because at this point because you have representation there is minimal upside for them.

You could die, your attorney could die, you could get fed up and walk away or settle for less money.

I’ve had claims settle right before jury deliberations on courthouse steps so to speak.

It’s the way of the industry and especially Allstate. They have attorneys on staff just for this. Claimants don’t.

I got my start at third party P&C claims administrator.

OTH, they will settle very quickly for minimal dollars.

  11. The Late P Brooks

Acton says Rammy is a DANGER to the state.

No specifics. Maybe she’s afraid he won’t hold the state hostage over a sniffles outbreak.

    • Nephilium

There was an Acton/Pepper sign I saw that for a slogan was some “Bring Prices Down!” bullshit. The only things I’ve heard for ‘lowering prices’ has been government subsidies… because that’ll help!

      • ron73440

If the subsidies don’t work, they could try price controls.

Surely those have no negative consequences.

      • rhywun

I just got (another) check in the mail from Kathy Hochul. Sucks for her that I can’t vote for her.

  12. The Late P Brooks

And since you asked, we now have a court appointed mediator, and a deadline for this all to be over.

That sounds like potentially good news.

    • The Other Kevin

It is. We are pushing the other side to schedule mediation quickly, but they can decide to be dicks about it and make it in March if they really wanted to.

  13. Pat

Mamdani raises eyebrows with new look, ditching beard and sporting surprising mustache

It looks like he couldn’t decide between the Stalin and the Hitler.

  14. The Bearded Hobbit

I just got back from the grocery store. I bought some charcoal lighter fluid and the checker asked for my ID. I thought that I had misheard her but, nope, ID required. That set off my bullshit alarm. Another example of how the morons in DC (or the morons in Santa Fe) have nothing better to do but make life more miserable.

    No ID for gasoline.
    No ID for propane
    No ID for Coleman fuel
    No ID for BIC lighters

Why charcoal lighter fluid is singled out is a mystery to me. I guess that’s because I’m not a moron.

PS @Slumbrew: my Monocle problems disappeared just after I mentioned them. Firefox is still weird.

    • Pat

I’ve been tackling household projects, and it’s always an interesting lottery game seeing what’s going to require an ID check. Bondo, spray paint, spray primer, and spray adhesive do. Latex paint, non-aerosol primer, acetone and mineral spirits don’t, although any glue that contains acetone does. Here’s Texas’ controlling legislation.

  15. The Late P Brooks

It looks like he couldn’t decide between the Stalin and the Hitler.

He can grow the little welcome mat under his lower lip and go for the Frank Zappa look.

  16. Pine_Tree

The video of the soccer incident makes it clear that it was a deliberate assault on the part of the goalie. He wasn’t “just going for the ball”. It’s a lot like the hockey homicide from a year or 2 back, but not quite as overt since there’s not a de facto weapon. Depraved indifference in both cases.

    • Urthona

If he were in the box, a mistimed jump might make some sense. He wasn’t.

I think he’s banned for life.

    • Grumbletarian

      That was clearly a flop.

      • rhywun

        *snork*

I hesitate to watch the video again. It did look ugly.

    • Threedoor

      Dying in/over a game. Crazy.

      • Urthona

It doesn’t *feel* like someone should die from that, so I clearly know nothing whatsoever about the human body.

      • Urthona

Maybe his knee hit the guy’s heart.

      • Threedoor

It’s wild what kind of impacts can kill a guy.

      • Grumbletarian

Maybe his knee hit the guy’s heart.

Yeah, kneecap to sternum at speed will be a hell of a hit.

Momdummy now looks like Groucho Marx without a sense of humor.

    • ron73440

Those are my principles, and if you don’t like them… well, I have others.

  20. The Late P Brooks

    Trust us

Control of the House and Senate may not be immediately clear on election night, and some of the 2026 midterm election calls will take longer than others. But that’s not unusual or an indication of fraud, as some candidates may claim.

As the nation watches to see how the elections unfold on Tuesday night, election experts advise voters against listening to politicians who cry foul without offering evidence of fraud as ballots are being cast or counted. Many key races will be close. And when they’re close, the results are likely to come later.

    ——-

Becker says there is a type of candidate who’s likely to complain early and often about the integrity of the election.

“It’s almost certain that the candidates who think they’re doing poorly are going to be spreading lies and disinformation about it, trying to fill that vacuum,” Becker said, adding that he believes President Trump “will probably spread lies and disinformation about the election on election night because he did it in 2020.”

Don’t worry, we’ll get the count right if it takes ’til Christmas.

    • Urthona

We don’t have to worry about that though. That only happens when republicans are winning.

    • rhywun

“And that’s the way it was.” *WINK*

    • Pat

Control of the House and Senate may not be immediately clear on election night

I like how this mantra is repeated during every election now. Couldn’t we just consider that the standard disclaimer or “new normal” and save the trouble? Don’t worry, you’ve sufficiently psychologically primed people to understand that it takes advanced computers that can run physics simulations and discover new particles smashed together in an accelerator weeks or longer to perform a job that took hours when performed by human hand for the previous century.

      • mexican sharpshooter

What if historically they were wrong, and Dewey really did best Truman?

      • Pat
  21. The Late P Brooks

Apparently Haley Stevens’ fiance exerted some sort of evil patriarchal Svengali mind control bully-fu to get her to endorse the Trumpublican.

It’s like regret rape, only worse.
