Sunday Morning Last Chance To Drink Links

by | Apr 19, 2026 | Daily Links, Food & Drink, Wine | 148 comments

Well, the State of New York finally disgorged a temporary permit for us to sell the Demon rum in lower alcohol forms. So beer and wine incoming. It also means that my small amount of remaining free time is now accounted for, so my personal drinking will soon slow to something resembling the trickled stream of a man with a massively enlarged prostate. Which, of course, would make an inability to drink a rather minor matter. But don’t draw conclusions from my simile, I have the prostate of an 18 year old. Hopefully, the cops won’t find it in a search of my refrigerator.

But enough about death, let’s celebrate new life and honor the birth of the guy who made sure we can’t have a quiet day at the lake; the original Drug Warrior; a governor whom I knew when I was a kid and continued the Maryland tradition of corruption; an actress who really knew how to give head; a guy who was either Flo or Eddie, can’t remember which; and a guy who had the best hair in the NFL.

And with that, let’s dive into Links.

Did any sane person expect anything else?

A good indication you’re doing the right thing.

Welcome to our side. We have cookies.

Sure, Leo, sure.

Look, he was a shitty big government president who loved foreign intervention. So perfectly on-brand.

Hang on, Snoopy, hang on!

“And now a rousing chorus of ‘Let’s Throw The Jew Down The Well!'”

Let’s be honest here: Kirsty is a tard.

In my paid writing gig, I’ve done a lot of articles on GaN power conversion. This one skips the obvious: replacing transformers opens a massive security hole.

Like from this, for example.

How would you like to have to give a piano performance with Count Basie three feet away and staring at you? Yeah. But well, this was Monk. There was only one Monk and there will always only be one Monk. As a commenter noted, he can be late, he can be early, but he’s always on time. This is The Old Guy’s favorite Monk composition played at an unreasonably quick tempo. Skip past the dull-ass proto-PBS host.

I have a suspicion that the solution to the aging grid is less a technocratic top down order to use new equipment and more deregulation and open competition. In fact I think that solution is broadly applicable to almost every problem in the economic realm.

    • juris imprudent

Hey, what’s the risk of a Carrington Event anyway? Just run the probability against the mitigation costs, and nope, nothing to worry about!

      • (((Jarflax

Is the current government imposed monopolistic grid safe from a Carrington event? Hell is it safe from a really hot or really cold day?

      • juris imprudent

No. No one is accusing the government of being competent here. Just that deregulation and competition are no guarantee of better results.

    • Threedoor

      Dumb
      Durable
And it had better be able to survive 308 AP.

In my paid writing gig, I’ve done a lot of articles on GaN power conversion. This one skips the obvious: replacing transformers opens a massive security hole.

Look, they work well in all kinds of industrial applications including EVs in both conversion and motor control. And I love me a little tiny USB charger that spits out 60W and packs easily and doesn’t weigh 10 ounces.

But the fact that transformers are dumb and simple is their strength in power distribution. Let’s keep it that way!

    • ZWAK, doktor of BRAIN SCIENCE!

I think there is more than meets the eye in this transformer talk!

But, seriously, the (spits) technocrats who think we can wave an AI wand and solve every issue are the problem, and, indeed, have always been the problem.

    • Threedoor

Making it ‘smart’ has allowed customizable and personal surge pricing.

That made my power bill go up $50 a month.

      Fuck you SEL.

    • Pope Jimbo

The problem with transformers is it gets both sides wound up at different rates.

  3. R C Dean

He shared a picture that he claimed was of himself showing his chiselled abs on the beach and claimed to be financially secure. He even used a banking website to persuade her he had $600,000 (£443,600) in savings.

But after two weeks of chatting, he said he’d been mugged and his phone and computer had been stolen, and he asked her to buy him a phone and to pay some bills for him with her money.

Jeebus. Enough red flags for anyone, you would think.

I do feel bad for people who are so lonely that they fall for this stuff, though.

    • Gender Traitor

My co-workers who deal with fraud hear these pathetic stories all the time. And the victims get pissed at these co-workers who tell them it’s a scam.

      • (((Jarflax

He luuuuuvs me, he wouldn’t steal my money! Same as it ever was. The only difference now is that people are so desperate the scammer doesn’t even need to wine and dine them first.

      • Gdragon

“The only difference now is that people are so desperate the scammer doesn’t even need to wine and dine them first.”
        ————-

That’s the incredible thing to me, the number of victims who seem to be getting a very bad return on their payments. Once people are on the hook they will convince themselves of all kinds of things so I “get” that part of it. It just amazes me how many people end up on the hook before a meeting (of any kind) and a kiss.

    • rhywun

      It is mind-blowing.

But please sometime tell the BBC that countries don’t need to “do” anything about this more than maybe alert citizens to just not be fucking stupid.

      • EvilSheldon

If the citizens weren’t stupid, it would be that much harder to rule them.

    • Pope Jimbo

She’d borrowed £50,000 of it from her family, in the belief the man she loved was in trouble.

To be fair, tardation seems to run in Kirsty’s family.

My family doesn’t do a lot of borrowing to each other anyhow, but you’d think that a) one of them would have told her it was a scam and b) not borrowed her the money.

  4. Gender Traitor

Welcome to our side. We have cookies.

Before reading the rest of the article, I’m going to guess that these zealous converts will dutifully turn in their new toys/virtue signals to the dreaded po-po (or some such pointless gesture) as soon as “the right people” are back in charge.

    • rhywun

Yup, it’s all for show. They will return to the safety of their comfortable neighborhoods and continue to vote for assholes who are causing actual damage that doesn’t impact them at all.

    • EvilSheldon

      Some, certainly.

David Yamine (quoted in the article) didn’t.

“Believing Radical Gridiron Reforms Necessary, Mr. Roosevelt Calls College Athletic Advisers to White House to Start Movement for Reform,” read an October 1905 article in The Washington Post. Hillsdale is not that bad. I’m on their Imprimis mailing list. There are neocons and other big government conservatives writing for it, but I’d say the bulk is small government conservativism, libertarian-lite, plus some general philosophy. Of those 320,000, the center said 245,000 were born to parents who were illegal immigrants.

Another 15,000 babies were born to mothers who had temporary legal status, while the fathers were not citizens or lawful permanent residents.

  16. Mojeaux

Yanno, I know lots and lots of words. I even know how to string them together correctly sometimes.

In 10th grade my English teacher tried on this new thing about examining parts of words, their original language, what they mean, and why the WORDS are put together the way they are, and sometimes I could only do that if I could shift pronunciation. Taking them apart didn’t work for me. BUT FUCK THAT I ONLY NEED THE WORDS!

I’m also not good at word games (Scrabble, suchlike) because it forces me to think of them out of context. FUCK YOU WORDS ARE ABOUT CONTEXT!

So imagine my chagrin that I was 2-days-ago-old when I figured out that “hypothesis” is “sub thesis,” after I’d asked someone why people call “String” a THEORY instead of a HYPOTHESIS because that shit sure doesn’t look baked enough to be a THEORY.

      • Threedoor

In my neck of the woods the Dems run as Rs knowing they will get elected because people punch the ticket for the party. During the primary they have been known to run two candidates, one running ‘moderate’ the other running very conservative to split the votes against the actual Republican. Many run in positions that have no competition. Sure we have closed primaries but they change their affiliation years prior.

    Crisis

Research has consistently found that when Black economic conditions worsen, Black birth rates fall. During the Great Recession, Pew found that Black Americans were more than twice as likely as whites to delay having a child. During the pandemic, while births among white women eventually rebounded, Black birth rates kept falling. This is not a coincidence. Black women are disproportionately their families’ breadwinners, and when our economic security becomes precarious, our birth rates follow.

We are watching it happen again and doing nothing about it.

This year marks the 30th anniversary of the 1996 welfare-to-work law. Whatever you think of that policy, many of us Black women spent those three decades running from the “welfare queen” stigma. We got the degrees. We waited to get married. We delayed childbearing. We worked, then worked some more. And still, the jobs are gone, our fertility is declining, and the gap between the children we want and the children we have keeps widening.

So as we come out of Black Maternal Health Week and head into National Infertility Awareness Week, I want to ask: does this country actually care about Black babies? Black women already die in childbirth at three times the rate of white women, so the track record isn’t good. But the Medicaid picture makes it even clearer.

This article might make sense to somebody, but not to me.

“Approaching white people who are living in slum rental trailers, rationing their medications or going without meals by talking to them about their white privilege isn’t the way to build a powerful multiracial movement — it’s a good way to get a door slammed in your face. Instead, we can talk about the ways that racism hurts us all when our organizing campaigns are based around a vision of the future where all of our needs are met. When we talk with white people about their suffering and point their anger where it belongs — toward those at the top, not immigrants, Black people or trans kids — we can build enough power to not just defend against fascism but to also win the world we need. And every time we don’t take this opportunity, we know the far-right does. We can’t leave people like Roxanne behind to be recruited by MAGA.”

    Don’t forget price controls

But although increases to the minimum wage help those lucky enough to keep their jobs, hours and benefits, they hurt many more.

A better approach with less downside is to lean on three established policies: direct subsidies to help cover expenses, cash transfers to boost incomes, and pro-growth policies that expand job opportunities.

Obviously, the egghead technocrats and their Inner Party advisors at the Ministry of plenty will tune the economy like a fine stringed instrument, once we throw off the false gods of capitalist individualism.

“Thomas spent an inordinate amount of time attacking Woodrow Wilson as progressivism’s intellectual and spiritual leader, when I would guess that most people who identify that way today couldn’t tell you when he was president much less what he believed in. And if they do know who he was, they would almost certainly reject vast swathes of his philosophy. He was, after all, an unreconstructed racist and eugenicist — something Thomas seems to suggest is a feature of progressivism, which could not be more wrong….

But Thomas’ attack on the left is really just a slightly more elegant indictment than the ones you might read on an obscure Reddit thread, or have read on an old Usenet forum back in the 1990s. His argument — that the left is determined to take away individual freedom and destroy the Constitution — is an old one, and it’s as stale and tired as it gets.”

So, what to do? As needy families struggle to cover rising gas and utility bills, rent, health care, child care and food, the World Bank suggests the answer lies in “pro-poor” and “pro-growth” safety nets — direct subsidies to help families cover essentials, cash transfers to boost take-home pay, and business-friendly policies to help create jobs.

    ——-

Recognizing New York City’s small businesses face some of the highest costs in the country — including compliance with more than 6,000 rules and regulations — Mamdani recently signed an executive order launching a comprehensive review to cut red tape and slash fees and fines. In the absence of steep minimum wage hikes, this should help control prices, keep employers in business, and motivate others to expand.

Minimum-wage laws feel good but often fall short. A better way to tackle affordability is to help struggling workers cover expenses, provide cash transfers to boost incomes, and promote policies that create jobs.

It’s simple, really. Prime the pump while the Job Fairy waves her magic wand. It just takes a little Democratic Socialism.

“Pro-poor” means “make more of them”. The Left has been excellent at doing just that.

I wonder what the fine print is; because that does not sound like something he would do at all. Probably race-based like all his other plans.

There is no chance Mamdani will do anything about the regulatory burden on businesses.

“Black women already die in childbirth at three times the rate of white women”

“Black women are three times more likely to die from pregnancy-related causes than white women, and the reasons are rooted in systemic racism and unequal access to care.”

Hispanics and asians have lower rates than white women. My wild guess is that they eat healthier food.

SNAP/WIC is hardly limited to black people. Most SNAP recipients are white.

        Same with tribal populations.
