Sunday Morning Great White Northern Dad Links

by | Jun 21, 2026 | Daily Links | 166 comments

Heading up to the Great White North for a couple days at Prime’s beach cottage on Lake Erie. She has, without any expectation of success, begged me to be polite, not ask people why they have beady eyes and floppy heads, how they feel about becoming America’s 52nd state, and why they speak with funny accents. I take this as a challenge.

Birthdays include a guy to whom I owe a great deal; a guy who, if he were any better, would be famous for Tena; a rather nauseated fellow;  a tragically underappreciated comic actress; the Man Who Would Be Siegfried; someone who fucked Spock and Jim Rockford; a guy who can’t write songs, lead a band, or ride Space Mountain; a human punchline; and a guy famously persecuted by Obama for embarrassing his regime.

Links will embarrass anyone.

Remember when Trump said he wouldn’t be played? Here he is, being played.

Everyone in Hamas is either a doctor, a soccer player, or a journalist.

Or a turtle watcher.

More helicopters needed.

It is vital that America’s attention needs to be focused on the stupid.

Wait, maybe this is even stupider.

Uh oh, this could even be stupider yet.

But it was absolutely fine for COVID.

“Don’t vote for that Jew lady.”

It’s nice to know that the sophisticated Europeans have the same taste as Midwestern hicks. I’m sorry, that shit is pus, straight up.

The photo of the two fatties who have had to “practice fasting” was *chef’s kiss.*

I’ve been watching our local university go whirling down the drain. They are not alone.

We can find the downside to any good news.

      Except in New York.

And pretty much every news article about this includes a bunch of “why are the troglodytes in the non-far-left freaking out about this” boilerplate.

However, Nawrocki is a nationalist politician who has exploited anti-Ukrainian sentiment for electoral gain. Ukrainians in Poland have been facing increasing prejudice despite their contribution to the economy.

JFC, if the economy is the end-all and be-all, then Hitler should be celebrated for restoring the German economy post Weimar.

    • rhywun

That is where I tapped out. Cato is writing for CNN now?!

I’m pretty sure the 76 year old turtle lady wasn’t a threat to Israel. But they blew up her house anyway with bombs paid for with my taxes.

You can be sure all the facts were reported accurately and in context.

Anytime someone uses the word genocide we know they are full of shit.

      • Drake

“For every tear of an Israeli mother, a thousand Lebanese mothers must weep,” Ben-Gvir said in the Friday post on X. “All of Lebanon must burn!”

Technically he didn’t say “genocide”, he just described it.

Context: they think they can kill there way out of poverty, but someone has different ideas.

Also, if you want to win a war, it is better to kill more of them than they kill of you. And better to make it costly if they kill one of yours.

I’ve been watching our local university go whirling down the drain. They are not alone.

    Fuck you, cut administration.

    • ZWAK, doktor of BRAIN SCIENCE!

Doesn’t matter, not when enrollment is so far down.

Plus, the wife was admin, and she was cut months ago (starts new job on the 1st)

    • Old Man With Candy

They are the last to go. The university just laid off 11 employees whose combined compensation was lower than just the Assistant Vice President of Inclusivity.

      • juris imprudent

Pullin’ that ladder up behind ’em!

    • rhywun

Big U here is growing like gangbusters. Unless and until China craters there is a steady stream of scions coming here to learn and probably report back.

      • Nephilium

Several of the colleges here have closed, and there’s talk now of Baldwin Wallace partnering with Cleveland State in order to stay afloat.

    • Gender Traitor

So after we were overrun with chain drug stores a few years back when they were trying to get the state Medicare or Medicaid contract, a bunch of them eventually closed or turned into “dollar” stores. Big deal. That’s how it works. But heaven forbid an “institution of higher learning” ever go out of business. 🙄

    • Threedoor

      Cut humanities.
      Eliminate sports
Make it so a student can actually graduate in less than five or six years.

  7. Common Tater

    Who wouldn’t fuck Jim Rockford?

    • Drake

The guy had a Camero and a beachfront house.

      • DrOtto

It was a Firebird, not a Camero. And that is back when they actually did have different engines.

      • Threedoor

I put a Pontiac 400 in a 63 GMC. It was a fun pickup. Loads of torque.

      • Common Tater

“And that is back when they actually did have different engines.”

Besides the 400, most V8 Firebirds had a Chevy 305 or 350. Not that a Pontiac 350 was ever that different in the first place.

      • Threedoor

Pontiac 350 is the same as a Pontiac 400 as far as architecture goes. Only similarity to a Chevy 350 is the displacement, the location of the transmission alignment pins, bottom four transmission bolt locations, and some fasteners/acessories.

      • DrOtto

In that generation, they used mostly Pontiac engines in the Firebird, either the 455, 400, 350 or 301. They stuck some Chevy 305 and 350s (and Olds 403s) in towards the end 1979-up, but that was usually either for CA emissions reasons or altitude. In 1980 and 1981, the Trans Am had an optional turbocharged 301 Pontiac engine.

      • Threedoor

Oddly enough the GM TH400 transmission to Cummins I have in my pile uses the Buick/Oldsmobile/Pontiac bolt pattern instead of the more common Chevy transmission case which also came with the K designation and had a thicker bellhousing and overall case. Why GM did that I don’t know but it’s a useless fact I now have in my head.

  8. PieInTheSky

OMWC ITGWN short Q. Should I make it to the gulch, i can assume there is no place there where one could purchase a spot of good rye or burboun?

    • Nephilium

There’s a couple of places in the area. The local distilleries focus on gin primarily (but have some damn good gins). Any in particular you’re looking for?

      • PieInTheSky

Not really. Just a good bourbon and a good rye that aint available here. i guess the good stuff is allocated and secondary priced and you have to hunt for it and 8 have no time for that. I liked the willet 4 rye. I understand there is a 7 and an 11, the 11 is probably too pricey for me but a 7 at decent price. Or any good rye a glib may recommend as long as there is some age and proof to it. Or something like a weller full proof or antique 107 or similar. Or some better buffalo trace product.

Old proofy rye i only have a bottle of michters 10 barrel strength in my bar.

I am not that sure really just thinking.

      • PieInTheSky

Nevermind the 7 is also probably ro expensive

      • DrOtto

EH Taylor has a good portfolio and is a Buffalo Trace brand. Since the Canada tiff, it has become more available. I recently scored both a rye and a single barrel bourbon from them.

    • Old Man With Candy

There are numerous craft distilleries within a reasonable drive of here.

      • PieInTheSky

But are they any good compared to the kentucky stuff

      • Old Man With Candy

Supposedly good. But if you want anything special from Kentucky, I can arrange it to be brought up here.

      • PieInTheSky

I generally like high alcohol in my whysky but lower in my wine. Are you a high or low abv wine guy?

This which i saw at a wine fest is…. Special

        https://photos.app.goo.gl/1NXuLiV4oofLEkwY7

      • Old Man With Candy

I prefer lower alcohol stuff, especially cool climate wines.

    • PieInTheSky

Who is the number 1 whisky glib 😀

      • Nephilium

If you want some real specialty stuff, there’s a local bottler who sources barrels, and makes their own blends. I can arrange for some to find its way to you

The allotments and rules for distribution differ state to state.

      • Old Man With Candy

        SugarFree for Bourbon.

      • PieInTheSky

I honestly want some good stuff that is worth the money. I dont know but assume most allocated stuff are not worth full secondary price.

      • PieInTheSky

What i would like to bring home is 2/3 bottles of good bourbon/rye and a 2/3 of good finger lakes wine

      • PieInTheSky

The river roots thing looks good. I will anyway wait to see how the visa resolves now i am just brainstorming.

      • Nephilium

        Pie:

River Roots recently started even selling in liquor stores here. To say they’re niche is an understatement, but everything I’ve had from them has been amazing. Yesterday I headed down to another distillery and picked up a new release they did, a Black Cherry Mead Cask bourbon. Aged in black cherry wood barrels (not the fruit) and then finished in a mead cask for 3 years.

      • PieInTheSky

        looks dismal

      • ZWAK, doktor of BRAIN SCIENCE!

Well, it is single malt, so, yeah.

      • Chafed

        Whoa! Slow down Zwak.

  9. rhywun

why they speak with funny accents

I asked one of them something like that (I think I was more gracious) on a field trip to Toronto in sixth grade.

  10. Common Tater

“Manley said he and a few other Black candidates had discussed coalescing behind a single challenger to take on Wasserman Schultz, but that effort ultimately “fell apart.”

  11. Common Tater

“Every Thanksgiving, the government agency reminds travelers that while a container of stuffing and turkey breast leftovers can be enjoyed at home, liquid cranberry sauce in larger amounts needs to be packed inside the checked suitcase.”

    That’s retarded.

    • Common Tater

“On its website, the TSA also identifies foods that most often get taken away at security as yogurt, hummus, creamy dips and spreads, jam, peanut butter, and cream cheese.”

None of those things are a liquid.

    Hypocrisy, thy name is OMWC!

    • rhywun

      He’s right, it’s disgusting.

And I would like to turn on the tv and NOT see another goddamn story about this shit.

      • ZWAK, doktor of BRAIN SCIENCE!

Eh, because I am the most basic bitch when it comes to food, I don’t mind it. Although I do think mayonnaise in its plain form is disgusting.

I am also at the point were I automatically loath all ’60s music and the boomer worship of it.

      • Nephilium

        ZWAK:

Hold on now… there’s a lot of good reggae and first wave ska that came out in the 60s.

There is Neph, but that isn’t really infected with Boomer Slobber

(also some great jazz from that time period, but that is sketchy for the aforementioned issue)

      • Threedoor

I would like to try mayonnaise in its original, non seed oil formulation. As it is it’s nasty.

        Bring back the whalers!

      • Fourscore

Anyway, I’m guessing whoever commies the hardest will win because that is the new hotness. Color takes a back seat.

    • DrOtto

Talk about burying the lede, the real story is Uncle Luke ‘Skywalker’ from the 2 Live Crew is also running for that seat as referenced in that article.

“Fifth-graders at a woke Upper West Side elementary school pantomimed getting shot by police during a pupil performance, shocking some parents and educators, and outraging cops.

The students at PS 075 on West 95th Street also hoisted radical left-wing signs during the caught-on-camera June 11 Multicultural Day event….

At the end of the performance, students rushed the stage carrying signs proclaiming “ICE Out,” “Respect LGBTQIA+,” and “Terrorism has no religion.” One placard said “No place for antisemitism.””

Children are our future — unfortunately.

    • Common Tater

“PS 075 also hosts a “Rainbow Room” for LGBTQ+ content — which can be accessed without parental consent for kids in K through fifth grade; has an all-gender bathroom where boys routinely harass girls; and held a book reading about transgenderism for 7-year-olds, parents and critics said.”

    • rhywun

Why do I suspect that every school there is exactly like this.

There is a reason that communism is taking over and without a shot fired this time.

  18. The Other Kevin

I watched Smokey and the Bandit last night. I hadn’t seen it in decades. Still a fun movie. I like how they jumped right into it without a drawn out intro. I’m noticing that about older movies.

    • ZWAK, doktor of BRAIN SCIENCE!

I watched Star Wars the other day, and same thing. Just the reel of a little back ground, and then you are off running.

    • Nephilium

Over the past couple of weeks, I’ve watched both They Will Kill You and Good Luck, Have Fun, Don’t Die. Both were fun romps.

      • Threedoor

We watched the Redheaded Stranger last night and then it started auto playing a spaghetti western with Bridget Bardow. The blood was amazing! Found where Tarantino got his stick from.

    • Tres Cool

“Give me a Diablo Sandwich, a Dr. Pepper, and make it quick, I’m in a god-damn hurry.”

      • DrOtto

I used that line to order the Diablo Sammich at a local BBQ (w/Dr. Pepper BBQ sauce). The kid squeamish responded “OK”, while the pitmaster laughed.

    • Threedoor

70s and 80s movies seem to pack in two or three times the story as modern movies in the same or less time.

  19. The Other Kevin

Happy Father’s Day where applicable. I will probably get a call from my youngest, a text from my oldest, and nothing from the middle one. So today we’re visiting my dad and father in law.

    • ZWAK, doktor of BRAIN SCIENCE!

My son will probably call, although I always ask him not too. I am not a fan of Hallmark holidays.

“Gov. Kathy Hochul has quietly extended a pilot program providing free healthcare to sex workers – with taxpayers footing the nearly $2.5 million bill.

The state Health Department in 2023 awarded $1 million in public funds to two contractors as part of Hochul’s plan to help the “world’s oldest profession,” but new documents reviewed by The Post show the program extending through June 2028, with $1.5 million more in costs.

Under the initiative, sex workers in NYC and the Buffalo area will continue to receive primary, sexual, behavioral, and dental care.”

    https://nypost.com/2026/06/20/us-news/hochul-extends-free-healthcare-program-for-hookers-and-taxpayers-will-foot-the-2-5m-bill/

    • ZWAK, doktor of BRAIN SCIENCE!

You know, if you are gonna support sex workers, don’t you need to support the johns, also? But they always seem to go after them, when this is what funds that economy.

Aggregate enrollment data for next year won’t be available for months, but several schools have already missed their enrollment targets for next fall. A demographic clock determining college-aged student supply started ticking 18 years ago in the wake of the Great Recession, when insecure American households decided to put off having children. With the eldest of that cohort now of college age, schools are having to pay for those decisions taken almost two decades ago. As one university president put it recently, it has left higher education at a “crossroads.”

It has nothing to do with the product, it’s just the birth rate.

    • The Other Kevin

“Insecure”, or they learned in college that human beings are parasites who are ruining the planet?

      • DrOtto

This is at least one of my kids stance. The teachers should be proud they’re bullshit works and accept the job loss as a win.

    • The Other Kevin

      • DrOtto

Lol – this is the way.

  24. Common Tater

“There’s roughly eight billion people on our planet; multiply that by one hundred thousand and you get one hundred trillion – and that’s the estimated number of microbes living in your gut.

    Gravy train derailed

“It is now the position of the United States government that people with disabilities don’t have a right to be part of their communities,” says Alison Barkoff, a health law and policy professor at George Washington University who led disability law and policy efforts during both the Obama and Biden administrations. “I can’t overstate how significant this change in position is.”

Without the federal government requiring that states provide these services – to help disabled people integrate into their communities – advocates and legal experts warn that cash-strapped states could cut them and return to what was once common practice: de facto segregation of Americans with disabilities in nursing homes and large institutions.

Pushback from the disability community was swift.

    “Advocate community” hardest hit.

    • Threedoor

I simply want my hometown to stop wasting money on ADA compliant crosswalks. All they do is damage tires and become filled with dirt when it rains.

    • rhywun

NPR. I don’t believe a word of that.

  26. The Late P Brooks

“This opinion is a direct threat to decades of progress toward community living for people with disabilities,” said Shira Wakschlag of The Arc of the United States, a nonprofit disability advocacy group. “People with disabilities shouldn’t be forced into institutions because a state refuses to provide services in the community.”

Taxpayers shouldn’t be forced at gunpoint to fund your do-gooder-ism.

  27. DrOtto

Did I miss the link on the Supreme Court knocking down a significant gun control law? Just saw it in a local Fox feed, but didn’t see anything on here.
