IFLA: The “Road Work 3” Edition of the Horoscope for the Week of August 16

by | Aug 16, 2026 | IFLA | 76 comments

Luck and Love are the governing forces this week. Venus has a couple of auspicious arrangements tomorrow and Tuesday. Mercury picks up the handoff until a alignment with Jupiter on Saturday. Libra benefits most from these things, and Leo ends its time in the sun in a particularly powerful situation. It’s good to be the king.

The thing that’s interesting about practical shooting is it’s both a social activity and a reality-based (or at least reality adjacent) one. There are “correct ways” of doing things that get transformed into doctrine or dogma, and yet someone who manages to prove them wrong doesn’t have their achievement disregarded. He just gets to write the new doctrine. For example, here’s how literally tens of millions of people were taught to shoot a particular handgun:

And yet almost everything about this has now been deprecated as people have demonstrated ways of getting faster, more accurate hits. Same gun, same human hands, same human eyes, better techniques.

Leo: Knight of Wands – Departure, absence, flight, emigration. Change of residence. Getting laid while travelling.

Virgo: The Hanged man – Wisdom, circumspection, discernment, trials, sacrifice, intuition, divination, prophecy.

Libra: 4 of Wands – Country life, haven of refuge, a species of domestic harvest-home, repose, concord, harmony, prosperity, peace.

Scorpio: 6 of Swords – Journey by water, route, way, envoy, commissionary, expedient.

Sagittarius: 7 of Cups – Distractions, daydreams, faux or temporary achievement.

Capricorn: 4 of Swords reversed – Vigilance, retreat, solitude, hermit’s repose, exile, tomb and coffin.

Aquarius: King of Cups* – Man of business, law, or divinity; responsible, equity, art and science, including those who profess science, law and art; creative intelligence.

Pisces: Queen of Cups* reversed – Distinguished woman but one not to be trusted; perverse woman; vice, dishonour, depravity.

Aries: Blank – Nothing to see here. Move along.

Taurus: 6 of Wands reversed – Apprehension, fear, treachery, disloyalty, indefinite delay.

Gemini: The Star reversed – Arrogance, haughtiness, impotence.

Cancer: 2 of Wands – Riches, fortune, magnificence, physical suffering, disease, chagrin, sadness, mortification.

*This is analogous to that specific draw earlier in the month, except this time it’s an extremely auspicious draw.

Blank – Nothing to see here. Move along.

    😱 That’s not helping.

    • Ted S.

Well, you are moving this week, aren’t you?

      • rhywun

As a matter of fact, yes.

    • dbleagle

      Blank- I’ll take it.

Tropical Storm Lala is blowing through now. Not too bad so far. Power is cutting in and out because why would a place in the hurricane belt not put power lines underground? One branch is hanging down into the pool but not moving around so I’ll wait for dawn to get here before dealing with it.

By noon the wind will be back to normalish. The rain will probably last most of the day.

      • cyto

        Because earthquake?

  2. Trigger Hippie

Taurus: 6 of Wands reversed – Apprehension, fear, treachery, disloyalty, indefinite delay.

Well I woke up violently ill, puked a few times, somehow managed to pinch a nerve in my right shoulder while doing so, fell back to sleep for a few hours then when I went outside to go grab smokes I saw my back driver side tire was completely flat with a larg screw poking out of the tred.

Off to a helluva start this week.

    • Fourscore

Toughest part is getting out of bed. Once that’s been accomplished things seem to go a lot better and easier.

Get that first cup of coffee and life isn’t quite so tough.

      • Trigger Hippie

Oh, I’m on pot numero deuce as we speak. Tire has been replaced, now just need the naproxen sodium to take effect.

      • (((Jarflax

The first pot often leads to number 2.

      • ZWAK, doktor of BRAIN SCIENCE!

Or, the first number 2 is taken in the pot!

    • Toxteth O'Grady

      Jeez, mon chou.

  3. PieInTheSky

physical suffering, disease, chagrin, sadness, mortification. – i think i need to take out a wisdom tooth

  4. The Bearded Hobbit

Capricorn: 4 of Swords reversed – Vigilance, retreat, solitude, hermit’s repose, exile, tomb and coffin.

I’ve gotta say, not loving the “coffin” part.

    • Ted S.

I think the “coffin” part is Pie’s horoscope.

    • cyto

Well, if ya gotta do the Tomb pa r, you’re gonna need some furniture….

  5. Sean

“ Cancer: 2 of Wands – Riches, fortune, magnificence, physical suffering, disease, chagrin, sadness, mortification.”

On point, other than disease. Yikes!

  6. juris imprudent

Nothing to see here. Move along.

    Whatever you say officer.

    • (((Jarflax

Oi, You got a license for that ram?

      • juris imprudent

        Wouldn’t ewe like to know!

  7. (((Jarflax

I am glad to learn that the Lincoln is headed to San Diego, not Norfolk, because the Ford is at Norfolk and you never send the Lincoln into Ford’s Theater.

    • dbleagle

      Boo! Hiss!

      • (((Jarflax

        Too soon?

    • rhywun

My new apartment has a gas stove. Squee!

No more POS electric that is required by law in dumbass Ithaca. No more “guess how hot I am” or “I think I’ll just ramp up to max and stay there without telling you”.

      • (((Jarflax

OMG, are you safe? the CO gonna getcha!

  8. Toxteth O'Grady

TOG has a brief moment to be circumspect but still not enough to catch up on the well wishes. Un peu de lumiere au fin du mois, p-e. Je me reste malade, off and on. J’essai d’emballer, me porter seule au docteur, et puis je peux lire ici. Je regrette.

We all enjoy Morley Field Sunday mornings.

PS. Canned Heat; yes! How to make emoji or diacriticals from borrowed Windows desktop?

  9. Evan from Evansville

“Taurus: 6 of Wands reversed – Apprehension, fear, treachery, disloyalty, indefinite delay.”

Those symptoms are far more negative than what I’m feeling, but, yes, that’s the ballpark. The delay at Apprehension Field will take some time for me to figure my way out of. First, I *am* getting paid for two weeks of escrow work next Friday. Very profitable July. Good to focus on positives. I’m highly streamlined (and family-friendlied) my Crest Quest piece and am going to shop it around. That may be interesting. If they bit, I’d likely ask to scrub the original from here, but that’s heavenly optimism ahead of the cart.

Best lead this week were my applications for State Eligibility Consultant, where (theoretically) I’d look at folks’ financial+ info and verify what programs they’re available for, like SNAP and TANF. Hey, a (possible) job is a (possible) job. As for now, may watch the end of the Yankees game with ex. That idea sounded better on Friday, but we’ve both cancelled once on each other this weekend.
… “Apprehension, fear, treachery, disloyalty, indefinite delay.” Oh! The stars are talking about HER! In which case, abso-fuckin’ -lutely on point. I should add more delay to my temper my apprehension of her treachery. *scribbles*

Onward, ho(!) to your afternoons, Ladies and Gents.

    • Shpip

State Eligibility Consultant, where (theoretically) I’d look at folks’ financial+ info and verify what programs they’re available for, like SNAP and TANF.

That could be a helluva job for a libertarian with a sadistic streak. “Well, Sasquee’chia, you have three kids, no husband, no job, no skills, and no prospects. Oops. Looks like you don’t qualify for shit. State programs are designed to be a temporary safety net for folks who, through no fault of their own, have fallen on hard times — not a hammock for people who consistently make stupid decisions. Better work on those skills getting the fries into the bag. A job, after all, is the best welfare program.”

Hey, a guy can dream, right?

  10. R C Dean

    Change of residence

Interesting. For reasons I am not going to go into, I’ve just started looking into our options for selling this house and moving.

    • Fourscore

But, but, but you just moved in not long ago.

      • juris imprudent

Some things you don’t know until you have to live them.

    • dbleagle

Oooh Oooh Oooh! Can we partake in crass speculation, as is our habit?

      • (((Jarflax

The crass market is oversaturated. You will lose your speculation.

      • R C Dean

Go nuts. It will be entertaining, at least.

      • EvilSheldon

Finding the remnants of a hooker in the crawl space isn’t that big a deal (as long as she (?) was dead…)

      • (((Jarflax

Be careful not to miss-gender the dead hooker!

      • Fourscore

I’ll see your hooker and raise you snakes, scorpions, armadillos and coyotes.

      • Threedoor

It’s one thing to find a dead hooker inside your hotel mattress.

But snakes and scorpions?! Come on man

      • Aloysious

His house is in the middle of the Chupacabra breeding grounds?

      • slumbrew

        I’m not saying it’s aliens…

    • ZWAK, doktor of BRAIN SCIENCE!

Hopefully not at a loss, RC.

    • (((Jarflax

I am highly amused that the left seems to think we should feel guilty because he killed himself once his entirely fraudulent career imploded when exposed. The entire movement is made up of that angsty girlfriend who threatened suicide when dumped apparently. Look what you made him do!

      • juris imprudent

Just reading Chris Bray on point.

The Italian writer Luca Dellanna has succinctly described the descent into a culture of “ritual over merit,” a social world he calls a “mimetic society.” In that kind of society, he argues, people regard themselves as important and high-status because they can perform the status-defining rituals with exceptional uniformity. “In mimetic societies,” Dellanna writes, “conversations are rituals where turns are taken to reassure the other that he is performing well.”

      • (((Jarflax

What else can you expect when whole lists of thoughts are forbidden and the dogma is almost all lies?

    • Threedoor

      Rocks for jocks.
      Kinesiology majors.

      Those that cans do teach.
      Those that can’t teach coach.

    • DrOtto

He should have applied to be superintendent of Des Moines schools instead of offing himself.

      • Fourscore

        Maybe over-qualified.

I used to hear that from Liberal Arts people.

Actually the Lib Arts were a good fit in a bookstore environment. Other qualifications people would move on at first opportunity.

    • rhywun

zOMG she has experienced financial hardship, people!! Do better, Wisconsin.

  11. Toxteth O'Grady

    WP ate my comment.

I really am in fear for my health. I don’t trust YB even to call 911.

The French has been on purpose: expliquer plus tard.

    • Toxteth O'Grady

Come make a home visit if you doubt me. It is AWFUL. Surprised neighbors haven’t called Code Enforcement.

I realize there isn’t much traffic on Sunday mornings…

  12. juris imprudent

    Apropos to the post…

“When astronomy as a field morphs into astrology,” the report warns, “administrators will face a largely unprecedented situation in which disciplinary expertise itself cannot be trusted” (italics in original). The largely unprecedented situation may soon arrive: The committee’s evidence suggests a substantial risk of humanities disciplines as a field morphing into quackery.

    • (((Jarflax

Poe’s law applies to Academic Journals more perfectly than anyplace else. The idea that openly mocking the idea of objective reality would be a red flag in the modern academic world is naive. The morphing is well on the way to complete, not a risk to be avoided.

  13. Threedoor

    sacrifice, intuition, divination, prophecy

After I sacrificed a few ounces of my tissue in a blood ritual last week I’m going to do some soothsaying and hit the Indian casino.

They’ll surely pay out when I hit multiple jackpots, right?

  14. EvilSheldon

In shooting news – I leveled up! Just made Limited Optics Master at the special classifier match at Southern Maryland Practical Shooters. Yay!

    • UnCivilServant

So when you you make it in Impractical Shooters?

  15. Toxteth O'Grady

Y’all gonna have another Dead Libertarian Woman. For want of a Forum.

    Adieu.

    • Toxteth O'Grady

I am sure should that happen that Bob will log in and go on about his beautiful lady, how TOG saaaved him. Not about how last week he kicked me into the pony wall, hurting my driving finger.

Told him yesterday I pitied dead Wendy, not him.

      Fuck all y’all.

    • Oy the Billy-Bumbler

Are you looking for someone to come to your house and physically remove Bob?
If you actually want some help, try expressing clearly what you want to happen. You’re chatting with a bunch of dudes

  16. The Late P Brooks

For reasons I am not going to go into, I’ve just started looking into our options for selling this house and moving.

    You hit the lottery?

    • Sean

It’s not zoned for a meth lab.

    • whiz

      Another victim of an HOA?

  17. The Late P Brooks

The committee’s evidence suggests a substantial risk of humanities disciplines as a field morphing into quackery.

    Suggests?!

That ship kicked the lantern quite some time ago.

  18. The Late P Brooks

Sagittarius: 7 of Cups – Distractions, daydreams, faux or temporary achievement.

I am the hero of this here minstrel show.

  19. ZWAK, doktor of BRAIN SCIENCE!

Aquarius: King of Cups* – Man of business, law, or divinity; responsible, equity, art and science, including those who profess science, law and art; creative intelligence.

Received a bid at listing price for the house, had a nickel-and-dime inspection and now they are trying to use that to come in way under cost. We shall see what happens (I think we originally offered at too high a price, and it is now settling to true market value). So, Man of Business? Maybe. I was going to treat myself post closing, but the double rifle that had been sitting on GB just out of range sold. Bastards!

Also, some idiot ran the stop down the block and went full steam into the basement two doors down. KIA, both the basement and driver.
