Rosie O’Donnell Is Back in the USA
Donald Trump has forced more than one comedian into a bout of seeming madness. How odd that the same guy who once could have run into Kathy Griffin, Jimmy Kimmel, and Stephen Colbert at Emmys after-parties would eventually become such a nuisance to each of their careers. All three enraged him in different ways, before and after he became president, and all three have had their livelihoods affected to varying degrees as a result. But no one is more synonymous with early Trump—New York City Trump, Apprentice Trump, the Trump who was always calling Page Six on himself—than Rosie O’Donnell.
O’Donnell has had a four-decade career, but at least a few years of it have been colored by a spat she had with the owner of the Miss Universe pageant. She was a co-host of The View in 2006 and 2007, and she did a little imitation of Trump in 2006. “I just think this man is one of those snake-oil salesmen in Little House on the Prairie,” she said. “Donald, sit and spin, my friend.” O’Donnell’s comments set off a now 20-year feud between the two of them, with both fighting on social media well into Trump’s presidency.
After Trump’s reelection, O’Donnell decided to move her family out of the U.S., and her old foe has since threatened to revoke her citizenship. In that time, she’s had comparatively little to say onstage or on television.
But this month, she has returned to New York with a new off-Broadway one-woman show. Common Knowledge, a 75-minute production that is not quite stand-up and not quite a monologue, features O’Donnell onstage talking to the audience about her move to Ireland, her wise and wry and nonbinary autistic child, and the unbearable realization that you actually have very little figured out, even at 64.
Despite his bluster, Trump would had almost no way to revoke her citizenship, but if he was able to it would have been funnier than anything Rosie ever said…

The people demanding that we smother AI with a pillow are really the height of delusional. No matter how bad the potential consequences of it all is at some point, the reality is that the technology is already out in the wild. Everyone has it. I’m going to guess the Chinese skipped a few hundred billion in R&D costs and just engaged in much cheaper corporate espionage. Whatever they do have, they have enough to where it’s probably even more dangerous to allow them to develop the tech unchecked while we handcuff ourselves.
It’s an arms race and has been from the start. And attempts to de-arm or deescalate will be even less effective than attempts made with nuclear weapons.
It’s a lost battle and some other solution is going to have to be found here.
Smart is a loaded word. It has access and the ability to parse through data at orders of magnitude from what a human can. It’s potentially powerful and dangerous.
People have this tendency to judge where the tech is when we are really in its infancy. I have little real doubt that it’s going to get far more impressive and more dangerous as time goes on.
But like I said, the idea of killing it in its crib is long past.
But if AI keeps developing it can take all the good bureacrat jobs and what happens to the poor government employees?
We’ll all be in the breadlines together one day to be served by robots. Both the selfless civil servants and the parasitic profiteers of the private sector.
And then into our incubators where the AI will harvest us for energy to keep itself alive.
I’m stuck in this weird spot where I trust nothing being said about AI from all sides, but can still see the writing on the wall. It is revolutionary tech no matter how close we are. There is actually a kind of perverse incentive for these AI companies to whip up a degree of hysteria. Who is being honest and who is a propagandist trying to promote the cause? It all kind of blends together to me and becomes noise.
I don’t have a timeline on development. I’m not tech savvy enough to say how fast it will happen. I feel as if much of the present news coming out is more hype and that companies that have gone all in have kind of regretted their decisions to some extent because the quality isn’t there yet.
That gives people a false sense of confidence though. The shit has only been a reality for how long? Things are moving fast and we can just look at the leaps and bounds that have been made with past tech and see where the avenues for rapid growth are and say it probably will live up to the hype in the long term.

Now, I think a lot of reporters hear this and say, he won’t do it, that’s a lot of bluster. But I don’t think that’s the right way to react. We should be saying, it’s unfathomably sociopathic that he’s even considering it, and an American president shouldn’t be talking this way. What do you think?

There’s this weird need for people who consider themselves right wing in some respect to pretend this is the same as attacks against women. First, I don’t think a teenage girl sleeping with an older man is inherently a victim. Women are predisposed to being attracted to older men. I can say that while also holding that older men who go for 15 year olds are pieces of shit. Both things can be true, but society prefers to only acknowledge one side of that.
But teenage boys are built different than teenage girls. And any adult man pretending that they’ve have been traumatized sleeping with that are just engaging in infantile pearl clutching. It’s internalized victimhood mentality that results from left wing ideology becoming dominant. We have to speak in terms of the left even when combating the leftie lunacy because it’s all we really know.
The fact that what she did was immoral and completely unethical as a professional doesn’t change the fact that if the boy ends up traumatized, it probably is more the result of the people around them pretending that they are some giant victim for this. The place where people feel the need to mock a book about black characters written by a black immigrant being able to just have an all-black cast because that’s the story.
It’s actually what reasonable people should have been calling for the entire time. Black people exist in disproportionate numbers in entertainment. If they feel like there’s a lack of good stories for them, go make their own shit and stop trying to coopt everything else.

Growing up black people and women had plenty of prominent roles in shit that was actually good. I don’t have a breakdown, but it wasn’t exactly that controversial. I’m guessing the portion of actors who are black has always been above the general pop numbers. Will Smith was the top draw at the box office for a decent run there.
