I can not drink beer anymore, every time I try it, my nose turns into a faucet and I get a bumping headache. While this makes me sad, I have learned how to enjoy liquor.
While I like rum, my wife likes gin or tequila drinks, so I have expanded my repertoire of cocktails. These are some more of the cocktails I make for myself and my wife. I don’t have a good collection of cocktail glasses, most of our drinking glasses are beer glasses.
2 oz. Don Julio Tequila
4 oz. orange juice
1/2 oz. Grenadine Syrup
Stir the vodka and OJ in the glass with ice, then pour the grenadine down the side of the glass to get the layer on the bottom.
My wife likes Tequila Sunrises and since I’ve started using a fancier grenadine, she like it even more. If you’ve only used Rose’s, you’re missing out. I’m sure homemade is better, but that’s too much work and this one is really, really good.
8 oz fresh lime juice
6 oz granulated sugar
1/2 oz Angostura Bitters
1/2-3/4 tbsp grated nutmeg
Combine all ingredients in a jar. Cap and shake to combine. Rest in fridge for two hours, agitating occasionally. Store in fridge for up to 3-4 weeks.
In the video above, he mixes 1 1/2 oz. of this with 1 1/2 oz. of Wray & Nephew Jamaican Overproof Rum. I used Hamilton Demerara 151 and it was really good. Then I had a thought, what if I mixed it 50-50 with Maggies farm 50% dark rum.
It was amazing. I haven’t made this in awhile, need to rectify that. I made a large glass with 6 oz of each and had 2 of them. In the future, maybe large one and then a normal sized one would work better. The ice in the second one was melting because I didn’t drink it nearly as fast.
#3 Single Serve Eggnog
2 Egg Yolks
2.7 Oz sugar
Little Nutmeg
1/3 cup milk, cream, and half and half
2 tbs and 2 tsp each of rum, bourbon, and cognac
Wisk all ingredients together in a bowl, then cool in the fridge for a couple hours before drinking.Pour over ice and grate fresh nutmeg over top.
I don’t make this one often, it is just a shrunken version of Alton Browns Aged Eggnog. I did learn the first time to let it chill in the fridge, the whipping of the eggs and sugar plus the room temperature alcohol warmed it considerably. A good alternative if you don’t want to make the full batch.
6 Pitted Cherries
2 oz. Tequila
1/2 oz Heering Cherry Liqueur
1 oz Lime Juice
1/2 oz Simple Syrup (1:1)
Muddle the cherries with the lime juice and cherry liqueur, add tequila and ice and shake. Fine strain into a salt rimmed glass.
I use Don Julio and though the recipe calls for reposado, we use a blanco. My wife prefers it without the salt. I garnish it with these cherries.
According to my wife who thinks the margaritas I make with whole limes is the best drink, this one ties it. I agree, it is so smooth and flavorful. I made it with silver rum instead once and it was definitely better with the tequila flavor.
3 large or 6 medium Blackberries
2 oz Gin
1 oz Black Raspberry Liqueur
1 1/2 oz Lemonade
1/2 oz Simple Syrup (1:1)
Muddle blackberries with the blackberry liqueur in a separate container, add all of the other ingredients to a shaking tin. Shake with ice for 8 seconds. Strain into a rocks glass full of ice. Pour blackberries and liqueur over the top and garnish with a whole blackberry.
So Good
Favorite Gin
I use this blackberry liqueur which I found in a liquor store in Pittsburgh that specializes in liquors distilled in Pennsylvania. In the video, he only uses 1/2 oz of it, but I put a full ounce in. Also, my wife never buys lemons, mostly because I don’t like lemon in anything, but she is very happy with the lemonade as a substitute.

I love a good rum punch. It gets so hot down here I do one with 1/3 Pineapple juice, 1/3 Orange Juice, 1/3 rum. And a little grenadine for color that floats to the bottom.

I asked her to get me some limes and am going to make a batch of the punch mix this weekend.
All of that sugar looks great for a single drink, but more than one would be a surefire hangover for me.

You make a batch of the punch and then use it in a 50/50 mix with a good rum.
The original was made with a 151 rum, but I like it with the aged rum.

I make it regularly. It covers the category of “watered-down mead”. So, in reality it is just lower alcohol levels and frequently lower sweetness levels.
I make what many people refer to a “session meads” which range from 6% to 9% ABV. These get kegged and force carbonated. They are typically served chilled and are wonderful summertime drinks.
If I made mead like you do, I would also stick to mead.

The Energy Department announced on Thursday that it will spend almost $2 billion to try to squeeze more electricity out of the nation’s aging and stressed power grid, as President Donald Trump’s administration steps up efforts to avoid blackouts amid skyrocketing energy demand spurred by artificial intelligence.
The money will go toward 31 projects across 26 states that are expected to produce more than 23 gigawatts of additional electricity capacity — enough to power 16 million homes. The projects will use new technologies such as sensors and other devices to measure real-time weather conditions to ensure safe transmission or direct power away from congested or overloaded paths, the department said.
The upgrades could improve power reliability and lower electricity costs for about 100 million Americans, officials said.

One of my shooters had a stroke at Nats. I heard him say “whoa, I got really confused for a second and now I feel like I just woke up.” I originally thought he was having a heat issue (since it was well over 90 every day) but when I was talking to him he denied ever feeling confused or saying what I heard him say. I got medical there, they took him to the hospital and stuck him in the ICU.
That whole week was particularly odd.

How were the stages overall?
I am starting to really appreciate Matt Hopkins as a stage designer. The amount of agonizing by the competitors over how to run mine was great, though after Jacob Heatherington and JJ ran the same stage plan, everyone went that route even though Mason and some other top guys ran it differently.
Except for Stage 2. It did not belong there. It was a particularly forgettable local-club design, no idea how it made it onto the ground.
Stage 1 started with a 37 yard mini-popper, but had a 15 yard stretch with nothing to shoot at, and the resulting sprint through that section made the final 20 yard mini poppers much more difficult than the earlier one. At least for someone in my fitness level.
I love that there is so much talent that the podium here was completely different than the match a month ago.
The other shooter couldn’t reach that far.

Yeah, I really wasn’t expecting that result since he wasn’t slurring his speech, having a drooping face/arm or anything that I’ve been told to look for symptom-wise. I just knew a confused guy was not someone I wanted running around shooting at stuff.

Pull my ear-phones down, check to see if nails are feeding and then try it one more time. My ears rang for a day.
The click I was hearing was actually about 140 dB but the earphones were completely muffling everything. Works incredibly well.
