Business (writing an article about GaN technology)- it’s not like I’d pick that as a vacation spot. On the bright side, I’m meeting up with two old friends I likewise haven’t seen in many years. Much beer will be consumed.
What’s interesting to me is that I haven’t been to Seattle in many years and I hear that it’s gotten brutally bad. I also hear that this is a massive exaggeration and things are just fine. This is why I don’t trust anything I read.
But let’s trust today’s birthdays, which include a dude who was totally chill; Bernie Sanders with talent; a guy you can blame for shitty margarine; an absolute icon in American arts and letters; the true Mrs. Frank Costanza; some Italian chick; a guy who looks like every commenter on this site; and a guy who told me it would be great for me to come into work today, yeah.
And someone else told me it would be great to do Links.
I’m sure of two things: our gas prices will go up more and it will be blamed on the Jews.

We noticed a decline from 2014 to 2018. Noticeable once the sunset and the critters emerge.
I last visited Seattle about 10 years ago. I was surprised by the number of closed retailers. It was a shell of what I had seen five years before that.
It’s fragile. There have been some feeble attempts to shore up the tourist areas since the World Cup came, but the lack of foot traffic in the former retail and business district is problematic.
It’s probably been 20+ years since I’ve been there, is the landmark strip joint still there; “50 Beautiful Girls and One Ugly One”?
I suspect that like most major cities, there are parts that are just fine, and parts that are brutally bad. I suspect that you will find the same pattern in Seattle as you would in Minneapolis or LA – the brutally bad parts getting worse, are expanding, and have taken in what you would have thought were core downtown areas that ordinarily the normies would have defended.
Philadelphia still respects self defense.

Normality bias is a bitch. People don’t really process rising crime rates until they, or a loved one, get mugged. Of course this also means that the unlucky people in low crime cities tend to over estimate how bad it has gotten.
I guess it depends on which kind of “bad”. In NYC the bad – as in crimey – areas have been bad for decades, are very well-known, and easy to avoid. And most forms of crime is still down something like 90% from the bad old days despite the left’s best efforts to increase it. But anywhere a normie might go for business or pleasure is just fine.
From what I hear about the likes of Seattle or San Francisco though, in addition to the long-known bad areas, I suspect areas of mentally-ill vagrants are spreading and not so easy to avoid.
The subway has definitely returned to the late 90s early 00s. I won’t take it at odd hours anymore.

I used to cook and the rest of the family treated me like a short order cook, so one day after several warnings to my wife, who was a big part of the problem (“ooh, that sounds good, but make mine with chicken”), I did just that, I quit cooking. Now my wife mostly “fixes” food. In my retirement, I’ll probably begin cooking again. I wasn’t bad at it, just wasn’t going to make 4 different meals per night.
The wife and I have vastly simplified things. She is an excellent cook, and I am decent. But we only make 2-3 real dinners a week, and the rest of the time one of us makes a protein and it is do as you wish with it.
My wife routenily tells the kids she’s not a short order cook.

The crowd’s focus immediately fell on Carson Hocevar and Ryan Blaney, who had crashed late in the race in a controversial incident, and anticipation — both along pit road and in the grandstands — was that their post-race discussion might not include Danish and tea.
It didn’t. The two drivers engaged in one of the biggest fights in recent NASCAR history near Hocevar’s No. 77 Spire Motorsports Chevrolet along pit road after the race. Blaney charged Hocevar and pushed him, and Hocevar immediately responded with a fist to Blaney’s face. It got worse from there as Blaney repeatedly tried to push through officials and team members to get closer to Hocevar.
Blaney perhaps was as angry as he’s ever been in a NASCAR post-race scenario. As he was moved away from the incident area, he repeatedly pointed and shouted at Hocevar.
Thousands in the backstretch crowd had a perfect view of the incident, and many stood and cheered. After Blaney was escorted from the scene by team members, Hocevar turned and acknowledged the cheers of the crowd.
Neither driver appeared to be injured.
Hocevar stood between his car and the pit wall for several minutes, talking to team members and delaying addressing the crash and fight with reporters.
“I understand why he’s upset,” Hocevar said. “That’s probably his championship. So I understand 100 percent. And I’d probably be mad at me, too. Whether it was his mistake, my mistake, my fault or not, I’d be pretty pissed if I was him.

2004 concert with a group of friends and we walked everywhere. Vibe of the city was like the 90s. Pretty clean. Some bums but most down by the Union Gospel mission, and on their corners.
Wife and I went in 2011 and it had changed. East lake mall was dead and the square was burried in bums and open air drug sales.
We had to go in 2020 right after the riots and it had made another bad shift. The mood was dead, the people we talked to said the riots didn’t get to their area while standing less than 100’ from boarded up windows and looted stores. It was weird.
