Thursday Morning Links

The Padres swept the Cubs. The Yankees swept the Red Sox. The Phillies and Braves will finish their series tonight. And our long national local nightmare in Houston is over. The NHL season is underway, and it feels like it’s a month too early, but I’ll take it. UEFA Nations League will be back today, without Ronaldo, who walked away from his team because he’s a giant baby. And that’s it for sports.

Cutting the fat. Good. Keep going.

Sometimes you gotta say “no comment.” Being a federal judge when those cases will come before you is one of those times.

Bring back the gallows. Or the firing squad. Or something other than this ridiculous cocktail of drugs.

This works a lot better than perjury traps. Especially when you don’t research your facts when trying to trap someone who’s very clearly done shit that’s a lot worse.

Is this pandering taken to the extreme? Or just complete retardation? You decide.

Canada…such a silly place. At least they didn’t kill an old person without their consent this time.

Then why’d you let them out on bail? Wish they’d have followed up with that question.

More on the UK being completely insane. Words are exactly as bad as violence there, apparently.

This is an interesting piece. Not sure I agree with the final conclusion about AI, but I do agree that the bubble is there and it’s huge.

This is weird as shit. The “she needs to be made whole” got a chuckle.

Here’s a lovely ditty. As were so many of his tracks. Like this one. Enjoy them both.

And enjoy this lovely Thursday, dear friends.

Sean, re Slow Horses – the politics are ridiculously left wing, as in all of Britain’s threats are coming from “the far right” but the saving grace is that it shows government as corrupt and incompetent.

That aside it’s worthwhile; some great acting, especially Gary Oldman. There is also very little plot armor – beloved secondary characters can and do get killed off, which raise the stakes nicely.

      • Sean

        Noted. Thanks.

And of course, since “UK”, there will be multiple situations where you will think “this wouldn’t be an issue if the protagonist had a gun as well”.

If I may suggest the guillotine? Not only is it foolproof with a minimum of maintenance and humane (as far as methods of execution go), it is also well-suited for the kind of high-volume work that we need at this juncture.

    • (((Jarflax

We pretend we care about the pain the recipient suffers, but all the new execution technologies increase that pain to avoid visible damage. It is yet another stupid optics focused idea. Massive damage inflicted instantly to the brainstem, whether from bullet, blow or blade, is the least pain. There’s no comparison.

More on the UK being completely insane.

Students in at least one college of Cambridge University will be forced to take mandatory ‘inclusivity training’ from the start of the new term next week, The Spectator has learned.

The 90-minute sessions are being delivered by Stop Hate UK. This group has published a video demanding that university students must always display ‘positive attitudes’ and ‘use respectful and kind language that will not cause harm or offence.’

Its training syllabus for ‘educational settings’ tells students that their right to free speech should be ‘restricted by other duties, responsibilities, and legislative and contractual obligations’ and teaches them how ‘opinions, attitudes and prejudice are influenced and shaped by unconscious bias, media bias, fake news, etc.’

The violence of recent days around high schools, in the lost territories of France, is far from trivial. Far-left elected officials support and excuse it. We must therefore see it for what it is: a dress rehearsal, a small-scale preview of the chaos that Mélenchon and LFI are preparing for France.

Mélenchon knows history. He knows that every revolution needs agitators, useful idiots, and thugs to instill terror in the country until it finally gives in.

Robespierre had his sans-culottes, Lenin his Red Guards. Mélenchon has his bands of riffraff. The era changes, but the method, it, does not.

We will not let France be handed over to this alliance of the far left and the riffraff. We will fight them relentlessly, for France has not had its last word.

Last October, a man named Wayne Broadhurst was stabbed to death by an Afghan migrant in a quiet street in Uxbridge while walking his dog.

It was precisely the sort of random, senseless killing of an innocent member of the public that would once have prompted weeks of discussion and national soul-searching. It emerged that the migrant had lied about his age, but had – inevitably – been given asylum and free accommodation.

Yet the murder wasn’t prominently featured in many newspapers; nor was it mentioned in the Commons that week. To date, Broadhurst has only been mentioned once in parliament, by shadow home secretary Chris Philp commenting on the government’s silence.

Part of the problem is the media itself. The BBC often covers these stories only very belatedly, or as a minor local item. This matters because the BBC website is by a wide margin the country’s most-read online news source so its sluggishness has an outsize impact on awareness.

However, there is also a sense of profound weariness among the public when confronted with obvious indicators of national decline. If they’ve heard of these things at all, many perceive reacting to them as either ‘low status’ or not worth the effort.

    https://x.com/spectator/status/2105570925420679315

      • PieInTheSky

        True.

  22. PieInTheSky

Haha this reminds me of when Singapore had this thing called the Social Development Unit which my American sociology professor told me was “basically government-sponsored eugenics.”

Back in the 80s, Lee Kuan Yew observed that female university graduates were not getting married, and that smart people weren’t breeding enough which he treated as a national emergency.

This led to the birth of the Social Development Unit in 1984 – government-sponsored parties, dinners, trips and even “love boat” cruises so that clever people could meet each other and, ideally, produce more clever babies. Locals immediately nicknamed it Single, Desperate and Ugly

There were other politically incorrect fertility policies of the era: the Graduate Mothers’ Scheme (kids of degree moms got priority school places), and higher tax breaks for those who were more educated with more kids. Meanwhile, cash grants were given to the lower educated and lower income parents who got sterilized after one or two kids.

“An antiquated New York law that shields rapists who target intoxicated victims is under renewed scrutiny in light of the “Cornell 7” case — but Assembly Democrats have long opposed a proposal to close the legal loophole, with one even referring to it as the “ruining drunk sex bill,” The Post has learned.

The “voluntary intoxication loophole” refers to how current state law doesn’t cover rape victims who chose to drink or get high themselves, even if it means they were too incapacitated to consent later.

“Getting drunk should not be an invitation to getting raped but in the current law, it pretty much is,” state Assemblyman Jeffery Dinowitz — who has backed a bill that would change the law since 2019 — told The Post.”
