Its Raining (Burning) Men

Leave it to Burning Man to create a headline where it would never really exist anywhere.

This is my review of Samuel Adams Cherry Bomb:

Okay fine, upon further review it is obvious this could happen anywhere (TW: Swiss, please skip to the end 😉):

WTF is that?

Within moments, the 51-year-old Colorado resident heard whistling and yelling and was suddenly struck by a third skydiver on the left side of her back — the same side as her sole kidney.
[…]

“I was just screaming, ‘That’s my only kidney, that’s my only kidney,’” Herre said. “I was terrified, and then I was in excruciating pain.”

Herre told SFGATE that she was hit near Rampart, Burning Man’s highly equipped hospital for the temporary desert city’s 70,000 residents, and emergency services personnel saw the impact and transported her to the emergency room. It’s not the first time she’d been treated at Burning Man for an injury, as she tore her ACL last year, she said. But this time, Herre was advised that she might need to leave Black Rock City for a more advanced monitoring of her injuries, particularly her kidney.

Though the hospital offered to medevac her by helicopter, Herre opted to have her son drive her to a hospital in Sparks, Nevada. At that hospital, personnel recommended that she be transported to a Level 2 trauma center for further treatment. In an email to SFGATE, Herre said she suffered a lacerated spleen and two broken ribs, and she was hospitalized for several days. Since then, she’s faced additional health complications stemming from the incident, she said

The article asks the obvious question of who is at fault for this woman’s injuries. My first instinct is the skydiver, as standard rules in most sports is the foul is charged to the player initiating contact. He just jumped on some lady at a festival but had she been in relatively good health she would probably be okay. I’ve never been struck by a skydiver though. Either way both of them should’ve been insured for such a event. Indeed, travel insurance for Burning Man does exist, although I would hate to see the actuary tables on that one. I wouldn’t be terribly surprised if life insurance carriers had a “Burning Man clause” of sorts, even if its just for a outdoor concert.

WHO AMONG US has not witnessed a mosh pit gone awry?

Anyways I went ahead and checked the ICD-10 database to see what they might use to bill such an absurd event. The first place I looked seemed more like an injury to the parachutist, or this one here for being bumped by a person an an event, but it seems more general in nature. It will probably end up being a V97.29 which again is a catch all.

For more information on demographics and mortality from Burning Man, please see this substack.

I saw this one at a Circle K while waiting for my oldest to finish his band practice. At first I was delighted that somebody tried making something that isn’t IPA. Then I drank it…after I got home of course, lest I become an F10.10 or even an F10.20. I am old enough to remember when Sam Adams put out a product called Cherry Kriek every summer. I rather liked that one in my youth, until I noticed I attracted the attention of other men drinking wheat beer at large gatherings. Is that what this is like? No. Its like Cherry Kriek if they forgot to water it down to 4.5% level and leaves you with a dull ache in your sinuses the following morning. More likely they just dumped in more yeast and sugar on accident and found a sellable product to 40 something year old men with moderate personality openness and high school age children. But hey! At least its not an IPA. Samuel Adams Cherry Bomb: 2.3/5 9% ABV

But hey! At least its not an IPA.

At least it has that going for it.

I think when I want a cherry beer, I’ll stick with Three Philosophers.

    • R C Dean

Its been a long time, but New Glarus made a phenomenal kriek-style beer. They still make a cherry beer, but it looks different now. I’ll absolutely give it and the framboise a go next time I see them. Unfortunately, they are not available outside of WI.

      • DEG

I have a vague memory of trying some New Glarus beer. My memory is that it was OK.

Well worn trope at BM: Read the back of your ticket. [Wherein it states you assume all risk of injury or death…]

    • Threedoor

Where is the fun in taking responsibility for yourself?

    • mexican sharpshooter

Pffft, where’s the fun in that!?

  3. The Late P Brooks

I’ve never been struck by a skydiver though.

In the movies they show paratroopers training by jumping off a platform. I Have seen a few parachutists land, and they seem to be going at a pretty good clip.

Like being jumped on from a second floor window? I’ll pass.

    • dbleagle

The stated* rate of descent by a standard round military parachute is 16 feet/second. The chutes that are used in freefall can be stalled so the rate of descent for a few seconds can be 1-2 ft/sec. Who knows what happened here? The BM risk waiver is probably pretty good, and the impacted woman had hurt herself at a previous BM, so BM probably won’t pay. Maybe they can comp her a ticket for next year to gain public good will. She can always try for an injury hat rick.

*That rate of descent is for a set weight person, and a known temp/altitude/humidity so I would take it with a large grain of salt. From my personal experience I had jumps where I swear I was coming down like a lawn dart. I only broke my vertebra on one jump, so I have that going for me.

      • mexican sharpshooter

Yeesh. Listen I never jumping out of a plane unless its crashing anyways.

    • Sean

If the jumper had executed a hook turn prior to landing, he could have been traveling *very* fast. Which would also explain how they ran into the person on the ground. A normal speed straight in approach, there should not have been any impact

People falling from the sky? Why would you look up?

If that Cornell gal was a 6 instead of a 4, that brings new meaning to the 6,7 thing.

    • PieInTheSky

are you talking absolute scale or based on university? she would be a 6 in Texas or Arizona but a 4 in NY, that sort of thing.

      • DEG

        I think a NY 4 would by a TX or AZ 2.

      • mexican sharpshooter

Coed at AZ colleges are much better looking than that.

      • dbleagle

        DEG gets it.

    • rhywun

I don’t think I noticed any gals that you guys would rate above 4 in the three years I lived in Ithaca.

      • PieInTheSky

        you don’t know our scale.

      • DEG

There was a woman from Ithaca that would occasionally come out to Boston Swing dances in the Before The Rona Panic times. I rated her well above a 4. I suspect based on her build Q would agree with me.

      • rhywun

        From Ithaca or from Cornell?

        Nobody is “from” Ithaca.

        /kidding but only a little

Zohran Mamdani explains his definition of socialism to Theo Von: “Socialism to me means you’ll have whatever you need to live a dignified life and that it is the government’s job to deliver on that. When people say dignity we’re talking about the things that allow you to take a breath. Housing, childcare, public transit. No one should be priced out of these things. These are non-negotiables, you need these to live”

    https://x.com/MarcoFoster_/status/2105804689220489445

So nice so reasonable what monster would oppose socialism

    • Chipping Pioneer

I need neither childcare nor housing to live.

      • Chipping Pioneer

I meant public transit, not housing. Whatever.

      • Fourscore

Twin City metro is free housing and public transit for some “unemployed” individuals, especially in winter.

    • rhywun

If you want the nicest house/car/clothes in the best neighborhood you’re going to have to work hard for that. But if you lose your job and get ill you won’t be thrown on the street and bankrupted by healthcare costs. That’s socialism and it’s almost all common sense.

Common sense. Now pay up – or else.

      • Chipping Pioneer

There are multiple ways in which you could obtain health care if you lost your job that don’t involve state violence.

    • creech

Yeah, lots of dignity in taking the labor and property of others at gunpoint. Them white plantation owners were just trying to maintain their dignified life style until them Damn Yankee Black Republicans came along.

    • Brochettaward

Even if the government handled those things, the mission creep would expand it out to everything. We’ve already seen it. Once the basic idea that government does things well/better than the private sector takes hold, they try to apply it to everything. Mouthbreathers out there think that public grocery stores need to be a thing these days and they haven’t even gotten the things they want.

A wealth of historical evidence that the government can’t do those things is thrown out the window. And we haven’t even gotten to the whether they really should part that the commie fucks take for granted.

I’m in the minority in that socialism/communism doesn’t even sound good on paper to me. I want to throw something at someone every time I hear that stupid line.

    • Nephilium

So… government workers should live in squalor until they can support the common person? I can get behind that.

        Milk crate furniture for all!

      • Tres Cool

When ex Ms. Cool and moved into our 1st apartment, the TV (19″ Montgomery ward hand-me-down from a cousin) sat on a milk crate.
I had the backseat of my 1976 old cutlass for a couch. The box spring/mattress sat on the floor. All our kitchen items (dishes etc) were given by family or friends.
It took a few years to assemble a proper apartment.

My office was next to this woman’s when I was with the Peru Tribune. She’s been following the same talking points as SiL’s Bestie, again with “Whimy & Rage!!” at all times. This one, however, is kinda witchy and plays into it. She invited me into her place once and I, perhaps not wisely, declined to. (I was with psycho-Ex at the time, when we were still flooded with early hormones. In hindsight, I wish I had another opportunity with witchy woman:

“Hex the patriarchy! “Girls will be Girls “… to the Women of the World who have experienced rape, abuse, sexual assault and misogyny We Will Unite ” We are all Jane Doe!”… . BURN IT DOWN!!! Rage Against the Patriarchy. Feel free to share your rage!”

Biggest thing I hate about “The Patriarchy” bullshit: Uh. In the historical sense, The Patriarchal masters also enslaved men who had no other choice, and those men were far, far more likely to violently die through/by the whims of their overlords. “That’s the way things were. Sucked.”
“Hush now, Ev. You speaketh too much. You’re blinded by the patriarchal power you’ve grown up in! I HEX THEE!”

    • R C Dean

In hindsight, I wish I had another opportunity with witchy woman

What happened to “don’t stick it in crazy”?

I mean, do you want to be accused of rape?

      • Evan from Evansville

I ‘learned’ that but don’t follow it. To be slightly fair, an older woman ‘taking advantage’ of a brain-damaged rookie may not attract Likes as much in their favor as they’d prefer. (To be more fair, I wouldn’t be good at playing up that angle if something *did* occur. (Kinda a fun pat on my back, I don’t think anyone would believe my ‘disability’ unless I showed them the pics.))

She was fun, I s’pose. Truthfully, I’ve now seen her adult daughter and, uh. Hmm. I’d prefer THAT sort of witchcraft. 🥳
To me more fair? Don’t stick it in crazy? Uh. At this point, I don’t think I really care. I’ve been on a (bad) date in four years? My 39yo, single, no-kids bio-brain is screaming at me to impregnate just about any female a step above ‘squirrel’ on the Hot Chart.

      • Threedoor

Don’t stick it in squirrels either.

      • Nephilium

        Threedoor:

        How about her?

      • Threedoor

        She’d steal your nuts.

      • Evan from Evansville

        Don’t squirrel my fun away.

Squirrel Girl has a “Not to be confused with Sophia “Chat” Sanduval,” which sounds like that ‘anonymous’ Sophia talking about the Cornell Jane Hoe. (“Train Hoe” is too many. I prefer Jane over Train Doe.)

(Also: Would have my nuts stolen by her. Metaphorically, that is.)

  8. J. Frank Parnell

The article asks the obvious question of who is at fault for this woman’s injuries.

    Trump, obviously.

  9. The Late P Brooks
