Saturday Morning Post-Travel Links

Prime and I had a lovely trip to Cleveland. Other than the game we went there to see. Well, SHE had a fine time at the game. Me… well… Anyway, it had it all, perfect weather, flyovers by a cargo plane (Cleveland doesn’t rate fighter jets), black female singers contorting the national anthem beyond the bounds of good taste and respect, and an abortive drunken fight breaking out in the stands a few rows in front of us. Nephilium egged them on, increasing the enjoyment. “I HEARD HIM CALL YOU A FAGGOT! BE A MAN AND DO SOMETHING!” So her first NFL game was memorable and she’s up for doing it again. So I got that goin’ for me. Which is nice.

Besides travel, there’s birthdays. And today’s include a guy who thought small; a guy who thought blue and blew were the same thing; proof that a straight guy can create a homoerotic icon; an artist whose best work was shut down by the Feds; probably the last NFL player to be named Yelberton; a guy, who despite his name, couldn’t actually play bop; probably the next one to go; a guy whose best acting was the role of Harold Cooper; a piece of shit grifter from my home town; a piece of shit grifter from someplace else; a piece of shit grifter who… well… you know; and somebody who was famous for reasons I can’t quite fathom.

I can barely fathom Links.

We’re fucked. Thanks, Donny.

Nah, we’re fucked either way.

It’s like they’re going out of their way to fuck us.

Can you imagine saving for years for that romantic vacation in France, and then…?

The Religion of Peace®.

The economic ignorance is astounding. And when it’s time for a bail-out, you know who’s on the hook- all the rest of us.

So basically a nutcase and freeloader. Meh, punch him again.

The one here had terrific meals and events. Thank Buddha that this got shut down!

Isn’t it ironic?

He really was the only good thing about Trump II.

This is where I usually fly in and out of. It’s hyper-convenient, fast security theater, and plenty of seats at the gates.

Keith Moon’s drumming was always understated, subtle, and tasteful. Here’s a perfect example.

They do know their voters. And their voters hate The Rich. But at least the SEIU parties down in Sint Maarten are gonna be lit.

    • Tres Cool

Much better song off that album than “After the Fire”.

      • Sensei

Oh yeah. Not a fan of that one, but partly because it was so overplayed.

      • Sensei

        Written by Falco.

      • DrOtto

It took me years to figure out there were 2 versions of that song I had been hearing, the original by Falco and the cover by After the Fire.

        “Alles klar, Herr Kaleun ?”

  3. Nephilium

The flyover was a C130J that we both mistook for an A-10. I felt somewhat vindicated when a quick search said that they were frequently mistaken for each other.

    • Grumbletarian

Huh. I’ve never seen an A-10 with four propeller engines. or any propeller engines for that matter. But I grew up around planes more than most kids.

    • R C Dean

I can’t imagine how you could mistake a cargo plane for an A10, which is technically a fighter. I saw more than my fair share of A10s in Tucson (where they had a wing of them stationed, in case the Mexicans decided an armored thrust toward Phoenix was a good idea, I guess). They are very distinctive in the air and about 1/4 the size of an C130.

      Firey sure, but mostly peaceful.

Definitely prefer the smaller airports. I’ll take the airport in Manchester, NH any day over fucking Logan. Austin-Bergstrom is okay, bigger than MHT but not yet godawful.

    • rhywun

I flew a tiny prop-plane into Manchester once. That was… interesting. Could practically look into people’s backyards the whole way.

      • Grumbletarian

Ha! Depending on the runway you used, you would have flown almost over my parents’ house; they live a couple miles south of the airport.

    • DrOtto

I disagree on Austin-Bergstrom, they are not run professionally. Only airport I’ve been to where they’ve had flight delays because they’ve run out of fuel. Then there’s the restaurants in the terminals that list food prices, then surcharge for taking a card, but also won’t take cash. That is a problem all over Austin though.

      • DrOtto

Also, the catalytic converter theft in the parking lots.

      • ZWAK, doktor of BRAIN SCIENCE!

Austin is as problem all over Austin.

Been there a few times, before they renamed it. And yeah, about as pleasant as an airport gets.

    • R C Dean

I find the whole “family forgives the murderer” thing just bizarre. Its a product of the sort of squishy cafeteria Christianity that sucks the spine out of people. Even for Christians, there should be no forgiveness without repentance, and the scumbags they ostentatiously forgive are never repentant.

      • ZWAK, doktor of BRAIN SCIENCE!

a kid I grew up with died in a drug deal gone bad, killed by another kid I grew up with. the dead kids parents did everything they could to make sure the murderer was treated fairly and compassionately by the courts, up to and including bringing him care packages in jail.

of course, the mothers first husband wrote the book “I’m OK, Your OK.”

      • SarumanTheWoefullyIgnorant

Yeah, not me. I had a second cousin (once removed) in West Virginia who in a drunken rage killed the wrong man. His brother, who was an ornery sort himself who had threatened people with a loaded shotgun, said, ‘I can forgive a lot of things. But I can’t forgive that.”

The one here had terrific meals and events.

I seriously doubt that’s all it was doing. I have no idea why China should be running a comprehensive program of infiltrating and subverting US institutions (mainly education as far as I can tell), but say “no, those cultural outreach centers will have no involvement in this”.

Did the events involve distribution of little red books? If the “Cultural Centers” are sponsored by the Chinese government, they’re a propaganda front, regardless of how good the cooking is.

    • R C Dean

You can drop the “If”. They are absolutely, overtly, ChiCom government ops.

I listened to the Megyn Kelly podcast about the Russell Brand trial. Not only are all the accusers anonymous (which is a presumption of guilt), sounds like the judge has it in for him.

    • PieInTheSky

Brand is a piece of shit. That is not and should not be illegal. The particulars of his accusations seem to me more spurious than usual. Allegedly.

T’is a fine autum day by the old lake. The sun is shining the wind is quiet and things are fine. Although i have to admit i bought a wine without propertly reading the label that i would not have bought had i read properly. But overall it was not a bad wine. The tbone steak was subpar though it cost more than a pretty penny and i salted it 24 hours in advance. Such is life.

A fast-moving grass fire that killed at least four soldiers at a western Canadian ‌military base on Saturday was sparked by an exercise using live grenades, a senior defense official said on Thursday.

High winds then propelled the blaze across the army base in Wainwright, overwhelming dozens of soldiers. The incident was one of the worst peacetime tragedies for Canada’s military.

Four people dead in training is “one of the worst peacetime tragedies” in Canada? Given the amount of Osprey crashes in the US during training the mind boggles at the might of Canada’s military.

“A new Trump administration rule allows hunters to bait bears on federal lands in Alaska with bacon, doughnuts, meat scraps or other human foods typically used to help kill the trophy animals at close range.

Opponents say the practice will cause bears to be more aggressive around humans, and allege that the rule change is a political gift to largely rightwing trophy hunters. The rule replaces a 2024 Biden administration rule that banned the practice, and environmental groups criticized the move as “indefensible and inexcusable”…..

The move comes after Alaska and federal officials in recent years started allowing sport hunters to hunt big game with controversial practices, like shooting bears from helicopters, shooting swimming caribou from motor boats, killing wolf pups in their dens and using artificial lights to draw bears out of the dens to kill them. The bear baiting is not highly unusual as about a dozen states allow similar practices, but more do not.”
