Eight Crazy Nights

On the road sea again….

Eight Crazy Nights

OK folks, I may be dialing this one in a bit.  Are you angry?  Is it because this review is short?  Or because I did not take you with me on this lovely sea cruise?  If it is the latter, please remember there is an official GlibCruise coming up in 2024 organized in great part by our very own Shpip! If you go, you can see me and my big green Brussels Sprout head live. I’ll be wearing my casual fez vs. my business fez so you may not recognize me. I’ll have the missus with me too.  I know, I know, all us space freaks look alike.  I’ll tell you which one is the wife. Raycists. Seriously, please come with Shpip, K.K., me and many others.  It could be a libertarian moment, like taking over New Hampshire! Click on the GlibCruise link above to see the Glibertarians Dream Cruise group, you can book directly there. Or go ask questions in the Glibertarians Forum, where K.K. set up a Cruise section labeled “GLIBCRUISE 2024 (that’s TWENTY TWENTY FOUR DAMMIT” under the meetups section.  If you don’t use the forum regularly, click the handy link I just posted in this sentence, enter your Glib login info (same as here), then scroll down to Meetups (about a dozen sections down) and you’ll see Shpip’s post.

On with the film! This film was suggested by a number of you in the Gliberati.  Thanks for that.  I hope it gives great fodder for conversation  Love him or hate him, give your Adam Sandler comments below.  Or talk about gardening tips and soil aeration.  I will be on vacation and as you know, there are no rules on Thursday nights. Night Crew Rules are no rules!

So watch!  Or don’t!  Everything is voluntary! Next week I start to wash the commercialization and politicization of the Christmas from my mouth by brushing my teeth with the wonderful taste of B movies!  I am playing something special for New Years’. Yes!  America 3000! Let’s get back to the dumpster and dive DEEP into some Golan – Globus goodness!

    Happy Chanukkah?

    • Chafed

      (((I))) was wondering too.

  2. DEG

This is an Adam Sandler flick? Sorry, I’m going to pass.

  3. Common Tater

OK, I tried, but this movie is awful.

    • Chafed

That’s what I said about The Waterboy.

  4. DrOtto

I heard Adam Sandler is a Trump supporter.

  5. Derpetologist

I just submitted my NSF proposal. It takes about a month to get a response. I was able to include a picture of my experimental computer. Hopefully that generates some interest. The maximum award is $250,000. We’ll see what happens.

Sandler has a good scam going: make a movie with lots of product placement to keep his expenses low, hire his friends for most of roles, profit from the rubes who will watch any movie he makes.

In a statement to the Wall Street Journal, a rifleman described the circumstances around his recruitment into the Armed Forces of Ukraine.

The gray-haired 47-year-old soldier explained that he was approached by three recruitment officials outside the local barbershop while he was on his way to get a haircut. The officers ordered him to get in a car and drove him to the local draft center, where he was held for two days in a dark room before he succumbed and agreed to join the Ukrainian army.

They’ll take pretty much anybody at this point. Also, it’s against American principles to prop up a government that does this.

    • pistoffnick

      …against American principles…

I’m not sure we have principles anymore.

    • hayeksplosives

I’m currently reading a history of the Crimea, which is of course a history of Russia, Ukraine, Ottoman Empire, England, France (under Napoleon 3).

      Crazy.

And as the advice goes, never stick it in crazy. Not our circus, not our monkeys.

    • Gustave Lytton

it’s against American principles to prop up a government that does this

Zombie Gen Lewis B Hershey scoffs at this.

  7. The Hyperbole

Scam is a bit harsh, he makes stupid movies and doesn’t make any pretense that he is doing anything other than that, some people like them and know what they’re getting when the buy their tickets. Far from politicians that promise shit they aren’t going to deliver just to get in on that sweet sweet monopoly money. Or rent seekers using the violence inherent in the system to fill their Scrooge McDuck vaults.

    • hayeksplosives

      I like The Wedding Singer.

      • Grummun

Same. And 50 First Dates (mostly).

        • Ownbestenemy

I like it..but cannot watch with Mrs OBE; major accident in her youth and memory issues makes that movie uncomfortable.

    Sandler movies have their moments

    https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=OZeHq7J9aHM

And I unironically love Happy Gilmore. Looking at Rotten Tomatoes, that’s the only “fresh” comedy he’s done.

    • Ownbestenemy

My best friend and I spent ages 18-22 speaking in just Sandler quotes to the unwittingly and possibly disgusted bystanders of our insanity.

I can do: Wedding Singer, Happy Gilmore and Big Daddy
It wasn’t until his more recent stuff have I enjoyed his SNL style comedy worthy of laughter.

      • Brochettaward

Wedding Singer is one I forgot about. Another good movie.

I’m not into anything else he’s made.

        • Ownbestenemy

Drew Berrymore’s redemption arc back into Hollywood.

        • Ownbestenemy

Wedding Singer hit cause it just enough removed from the late 80s and poked just the right amount of fun at the culture. Something we used to be able to do.

      • Ownbestenemy

Oh I will add that Billy Madison as a teen was glorious and as an adult even funnier.

    • Brochettaward

Happy Gilmore is a classic. Big Daddy is also a quality movie. Comedy with heart.

He’s done some good acting in other people’s movies.

The stuff he churns out now is garbage, but somehow Netflix deems it worth the investment. He still has name value. In his defense, what was the last good comedy you saw?

      • Ownbestenemy

Christmas Vacation. We just left cousins after movie night.

Modern day? Mindless comedy, Get Hard. Actual smart comedy? Uh…

        • Brochettaward

I think there was more good humor in Nazi Germany the night before the Russians rolled in than there is today in Wokemerica.

          • Ownbestenemy

TV shows have covered at least some good ground. Community, Mythic Quest, and Silicon Valley to name a few. Movies are lost.

  9. Brochettaward

15 comments. What the fuck is wrong you with YOU PEOPLE? Get your shit together.

I’m out here Firsting and weaving. Firsting and weaving. You can see the energy I bring to the table unlike you schmucks.

I remember back in 1997 when my brother and I showed our dad South Park. I can still remember the words “This is so stupid, but also the funniest bullshit I have ever seen”. Every comedy that is satire in nature should reach for that badge.

    • Zwak says the real is not governable, but self-governing.

Sunny. That has got to be one of the funniest things to come out in the last 20 years. They have been skating the last few seasons, but when it hits, god is it funny.

The Mick, Sirens, and a few other 1-2 season shows were funny but I guess execs felt otherwise or I am not part of the mass market

      • slumbrew

“Because of the implication” makes me laugh every time.

    • rhywun

Ha that is the exact same reaction I had the first time I saw it. One of the few times I was actually speechless at something I was watching.

      • Ownbestenemy

It had such an impact on my life that I meticulously recreated the South Park crew in Illustrator for a comic pane style presentation on the 13th Amendment featuring Cartman as the narrator.

My civics teach snickered…didn’t approve but nonetheless I drew that which was better than the B grade I received

  11. Gustave Lytton

Adam Sandler instead of Christmas in Connecticut? For shame.

    • The Hyperbole

I don’t have Adidas, it’ll have to be Redwings, And Christmas music sucks, I’ll be listening to John Hiatt.

      • Lackadaisical

        ‘Christmas music sucks’

I know you like to be contrarian, but you can take it too far sometimes.

        • The Hyperbole

It’s a simple statement of fact. If X-mas music is so great why do you people only subject yourselves to it 4-6 weeks out of the year.

  12. Sean

Ugh. “Feels like” temps are in the teens this morning.

    • UnCivilServant

Actual Temperature here is 18 Degrees. Wind chill is somewhere between 0 and 10.

    • Gender Traitor

39 here in SW OH at the moment (“feels like 36,”) and forecast high of 51. Predicted to get up to 59 Christmas Eve and 57 on Christmas…with rain. 😕

    • Lackadaisical

Going to be 70 and sunny here.

Not festive like I’m used to, but at least it won’t suck.

  13. Tres Cool

    suh’ fam
    yo whats goody

    TALL YULETIME CANS!

    • Gender Traitor

Good morning, homey, Sean, Beau, and U!

After work today, I’m going to summon up all my courage foolhardiness and venture into The Big Grocery on the way home from my office because the one near my house didn’t have the right brand of chai latte mix last night, and it’s a three-day weekend, dammit! 😒

      • UnCivilServant

I have to visit a few to make sure I have a sufficient stock of caffiene myself – the one I use most (being only two miles from the house) tends to understock Diet Dew, and thus is almost always sold out.

        • Gender Traitor

Good luck! You sure don’t want to do without the Dew!

  14. UnCivilServant

And, of course I went and spilled breakfast down my shirt.

    *sigh*

    • Gender Traitor

I’m sorry. 🙁 With any luck, there’s probably hardly anyone in the office today.

      • UnCivilServant

I’m the only one here – but that’s always the case before 7:30.

I’ve gotten reasonably cleaned up, so I should be okay.

    • Lackadaisical

This is why you shouldn’t get sloppy drunk in the morning. Beer for breakfast sounds good, but it is no way to start your work day. 😉

      • UnCivilServant

I hardly drink, let alone get drunk, and have never been sloppy drunk.

Also, I don’t drink at the office, that can get me fired.

Lastly, beer sucks, why would I subject myself to that?

        • Lackadaisical

I just enjoy torturing you/giving you chances to ‘ackshually’ us on your real life. 🙂

Hope your day ends better than it started.

  15. R.J.

The nice thing is STEVE SMITH can’t come get me for a low comment count while I am on a boat.

Wait, what’s that big wave behind the cruise ship?

    NO! NOOOOOO! SEA SMITH! AAAAAHH!

    • UnCivilServant

We’re going to need another RJ.

Someone go unbox a new one.

      • Ownbestenemy

Made me think…I wonder what an AI chatbot trained on libertarian theory, our articles and comments would respond like…

        • UnCivilServant

          A paranoid schitzophrenic, probably.

Those newfangled AIs can be unstable. You want something oldschool, look for vacuum tubes, but with a paradox buffer circuit added so no one can talk it to death.

          • Ownbestenemy

Well now I am going to question if any of us are actually real.

  16. Ownbestenemy

Past three days MSM is running articles on how Kavanaugh and Gorsuch are the most likely justices that will side with Colorado. Battlespace prep?

Both Newsweek so take that for what it is.

    Kavanaugh
I guess because a case before him while on the bench he swung against Trump’s organization? Okay again, two separate cases…

    Gorsuch

The case was about a naturalized American citizen, Abdul Karim Hassan, who wanted to run for the presidency, but was prevented from being placed on the ballot by the Constitution’s natural-born citizen requirement.

Okay..so? Not the same context or pretense to the Trump kerfuffle and not even sure why lawyers even referenced it in Colorado.

    • Lackadaisical

‘Those four justices were all appointed by Democratic governors.’

Didn’t someone say all 7 were democratic appointees?

‘The Colorado Supreme Court ruled Tuesday that Trump is disqualified from holding the presidency under the Constitution’s so-called insurrection clause. But the issue divided the seven justices — all of whom were appointed by Democratic governors. · “President Trump did not merely incite the insurrection,” the court wrote in the 4-to-3 ruling.’ -CBS news (https://www.cbsnews.com/news/trump-colorado-supreme-court-ruling-what-happens-next/)

‘He is also literally Hitler’ the Court continued. [obviously my own commentary]

      • UnCivilServant

I’m just waiting for one of the supreme court rebukes to end with “And the lower court judge who issued the ruling should be permanantly disbarred for failure to understand the precepts of law”

        • Ownbestenemy

The dissents were quite close to saying that.

          • Lackadaisical

IF they were Federal court judges the Supremes could actually do that, and I believe it would be warranted. Because they are state court judges, unfortunately they’re not subject to SCOTUS rebuke.

            • Lackadaisical

To be clear, I don’t think the Supreme court should be able to punish them in anyway. But wow are they dumb and deserve to be kicked off the bench by whatever legal means are available to the people of Colorado.

              • Ownbestenemy

I see Jared Polis is remarkably silent on the issue. As the premier Libertarian (it was hard not to laugh while typing that out) that Reason claims he is, this should have invoked some type of response or comment or something.

    • Lackadaisical

      RE; Gorsuch:

‘Crucially, the historic decision referenced a previous ruling by Gorsuch, before he became a SCOTUS justice, which found that “a state’s legitimate interest in protecting the integrity and practical functioning of the political process permits it to exclude from the ballot candidates who are constitutionally prohibited from assuming office.”

Ah, yes, are Journalism majors a single step ahead of education majors for having the lowest IQ’s? I just can’t even.

      • Ownbestenemy

Yeah I get they wanted those words in there its just those words have no meaning in the 14th Amendment context.

  17. Lackadaisical

TLDR: Anyone, even someone in a state of sin, can ask for a blessing from a priest, media is getting it twisted (hard to believe)

The message from my Priest on the Pope’s ill worded(?) or misinterpreted missal on same sex blessings:

“On Monday, December 17, 2023 a document entitled Fiducia Supplicans was issued by the Vatican. Immediately news alerts and headlines went out reporting things like “Pope Oks same-sex blessings.” I believe the reporting of this document has caused confusion and concern in many quarters. When I first got the news alert, I immediately went to the Vatican webpage and read the document. Very quickly I realized that what was being reported and what was actually in the document were not the same thing. I certainly would encourage everyone to read the actual document in order to realize the two concrete points being made which are neither contradictory nor a novelty:
The Sacrament of Marriage is reaffirmed between a man and a woman. The document reiterates that marriage is an “exclusive, stable, and indissoluble union between a man and a woman, naturally open to the generation of children and what contradicts it are inadmissible. This conviction is grounded in the perennial Catholic doctrine of marriage; it is only in this context that sexual relations find their natural, proper, and fully human meaning. The Church’s doctrine on this point remains firm” (# 4). I don’t know how this could be made any clearer. For those hoping that the Church would permit same-sex marriage, they are going to be greatly disappointed.
Everyone is eligible to receive blessings in their ordinary daily lives. One need not be in the state of grace to receive a blessing or ask for a blessing. This should be obvious as it is not uncommon for Catholics, who are conscious of moral sin in their lives, often come forward at communion time to receive a blessing. The document specifically speaks of spontaneous and non-ritual blessings outside of church and not connected to any form of civil ceremonies for couples married outside of the church as well as for those in same sex unions. “[T]here is no intention to legitimize anything, but rather to open one’s life to God, to ask for his help to live better, and also to invoke the Holy Spirit so that the values of the Gospel may be lived with greater faithfulness” (# 40). May all people “feel that they are still blessed, notwithstanding their serious mistakes, that their heavenly Father continues to will their good and to hope that they will ultimately open themselves to the good” (# 27).
Lastly, I would point out that the word “blessing” has multiple meanings and I think this has added to the confusion. “Blessing” can mean a request of God to bestow grace or protection (e.g. asking God to bless a home or a child going off to college), but it can also be a synonym for approval (e.g. the bishop gave us his blessing for the design of the new building). While a headline such as “Pope oks same-sex blessings” is technically true, many might naturally understand that as saying the pope approves same-sex unions verses saying that the pope is allowing for asking for God’s grace on those who are in a state of serious sin, outside sacramental marriage. It is factually incorrect to say that this document condones same-sex unions. Sadly, some are publicly claiming that this declaration reverses previous prohibitions against sexual relationships outside of marriage or that the blessing same-sex unions is now fine (as long as one does not confuse such unions with a marriage). In fact, such an interpretation is the exact opposite of Fiducia Supplicans’ instruction. The Church does not have the power to declare something which is objectively sinful in Scripture as no longer a sin. Anyone who claims that the Vatican’s document authorizes blessings of same-sex unions has not read it, does not understand what it is saying or, even worse, is intentionally misinterpreting it whether that person is a priest or even a bishop. The bottom line is that, like Jesus, we can and should reach out to those who feel alienated from God and His Church, but at the same time we must remain faithful to the truth of the Gospel which has been entrusted to the Church by Christ Himself. Feel free to bring any questions or concerns you may have to Fr. Andrew, Fr. Jacob, or me. I also would encourage you to also read the document for yourself.”
