A father and son are expected to face federal kidnapping charges after they zip-tied two U.S. Forest Service employees and held them at gunpoint inside a trailer in Northern California near Mt. Shasta.
Forest Service Chief Tom Schultz said the two workers were conducting routine field operations in the Shasta-Trinity National Forest when they were taken Thursday. They were released early Friday morning after being held for more than 12 hours near Gunboot Lake.
“I want to say how profoundly grateful and relieved that we are, that our two employees were released safely. Their well-being continues to be our highest priority,” Schultz said.
The 49-year-old suspect and his adult son surrendered around 2:30 a.m. Friday and walked out of the trailer carrying an assault rifle and knives. He also told authorities he had grenades.

300 blackout is cool but is it necessiary?
I have a 300BO upper that I pop onto one of my lowers for still-hunting deer. That’s the only thing I use it for. If it were legal to hunt deer in VA with a 556, I wouldn’t own one.
Oddly, that is one area that California shines, you can use 5.56/.223 for deer there.
This is gonna be my 2nd in 7.62×39.

A good day today. My bee partner showed up, we did an inspection and pulled a good bit of honey out. It’s a week earlier that last year’s first look and much more productive. The bees were very mild on the first three hives, the 4th one, the last one, the bees came looking for me, not so much for my partner. Any way I got stung about 8-10 times, mostly on the knees but a couple on the elbow.
My jeans were a little tighter on the knees, fortunately I killed them before they could unload the mega venom and the stings were mild. Itch a little now. A lot of years I go the whole season without getting stung, this was the most for a long, long time. The hives look healthy, lots of bees, we’ve had rain so the wild flowers are plentiful. We could use some of the stuff from TX but maybe not in that quantity.

And they have the sour Skittles I’m gonna need, and … hrm. They don’t have my lovely 350 calorie breakfast ‘shakes.’ I may make that a two-parter. My Michigan run was lovely for me, and Walmart’s ~25 minutes each way. She’d get off at 2 anyway, Cubs at 2:20, so I’d have to go earlier.
