Sometimes it is hard to decide what to post. At a time like that, I dig down deep in the bag of suggestions, and come up with something. This time, I came up with one of CPRM’s suggestions from last year: Space Truckers.
We have a relatively all-star cast with Dennis Hopper, Debi Mazar, Stephen Dorff, and even George Wendt making an appearance! We have a strong script, and should have had a blockbuster hit. Wa Happened?
Well, it bombed with critics and the film distributors panicked. It never got an actual release in the theaters for the US, and that absolutely killed any chance of box office success. It went straight to cable and to an early grave. Too bad. Did it deserve this fate? You decide for yourself!
So what is it about? For a PowerPoint-worthy explanation, we turn to go_titans at IMDB:
- This is a good B-Grade film, and there are many reasons to watch it.
- First, and the reason I watched it: Debi Mazar is gorgeous and gets plenty of quality screen time.
- Second: the story line is interesting and imaginative.
- Third: the special effects are more than decent when one considers the mid-range success this film’s creators would have been aiming for.
- Fourth: the acting from the main pair (Charles Dance & Dennis Hopper) was spot on – considering this film was meant to be a space adventure/comedy.
- Fifth: the design of ships and cargo carriers was very good.
- Sixth: almost all of the dialogue was well written.
- Seventh: the film should provide many laughs all the way through.
Trivia! We’ve seen Debi Mazar before in the Rodney Dangerfield film Meet Wally Sparks. (GlibFlick 05/04/23) Sadly that film is not streaming for free at this time, I only have a trailer.

So watch! Or don’t! Everything is voluntary! Next week I will pick another movie out of a hat, as it is still summer in Texas, and it is 105 degrees every day. Makes it harder to plan.

Oh good, this site has been acting flaky.
I just pushed it through. We’ve been having to force every post to actually post. WP is asshoe.
I thought we won against WP. Sighโฆ
Fuck WordPress
I say we move to Drupal. FOSS/GPL. Let’s face it, it can’t be any worse.
AI knows us too well. We know AI understands the post needs to consent to being posted. We’re big on it. But AI’s in the tweeny, Lefty stage of “enthusiastic” consent, which is you posting manually, like you really really really mean it. Cuz like, agency and stuff.
Bitch’ll learn soon.
Watching the intro and remembering how much better miniatures were than CGI.
Case in point: the CGI zero gravity blood and tooth. Oy vey…
I was gonna bitch about my dumb tv and I got bot blocked.
I fucking give up.
What happened?
Ok. Explain your issue. Because I am outside with no problem.
I am on Verizon Fios for a week now and have not yet come to grips with how to use it.
No worries.
IOW I had a nice bitchy complaint all typed up and it got et up.
That was me yesterday Rhy
Use it to download massive amounts of porn, of course.
I remember this was popular on VHS. I have Blu-Ray rip on my hard drives. I think I’ve seen this at least four times by now.
I wonder if Space X is going to start selling advertising space like NASCAR.
I Am having a hell of a time posting.
I’ve gotten a bunch of weird shit.
I paid my dues.
Please donโt send Steve Smith to shake me down!
My dues are paid tomorrow. Daddy needs a paycheck.
Charles Dance!
Reminds me, I *really* need to rewatch Last Action Hero.
“The film was also involved in a defamation suit between Dennis Hopper and Rip Torn where Hopper publicly stated Torn pulled a knife on him on the set of Easy Rider back in the 1960s. Hopper’s representatives tried to settle the defamation suit by floating the offer of a supporting role in Space Truckers, which Torn’s representatives refused.”
Take ‘er easy there, Rip. Who cares 25 years later? Wasn’t everyone pulling knives back when?
I think Steven Tyler is being sued for something over 50 years ago.
Also to be fair, Russell Brand is being sued for alleged rapes in like 2001. Statutes of limitations are important, other than dead bodies. Just for evidence and fair, speedy trial alone. And the obvious money angle for accusers.
The two of ’em shoulda just taken out back. (See also: The other day’s ‘duels’ conversation.)
Jeeeeeeez. Cannot post.
Wanted to send this. I am here.

Nice! ๐๐
Again – sick luxury.
It’s the little details that make it – the bottle of Bulleit on the table, the dive (?) watch on the edge…
Itโs a 100 M . Not a dive watch.
And yes that is a whiskey bottle.
Good eye – I was also wanting details on the watch
Itโs the Jack Mason solar quartz. With a Leatherman Tread band.
It looks like Elaine’s gonna make out with Doc Brown. Bottle needs more drinkin’. Your tub is lonely. The watch is judgmental.
Soโฆ
There were three girls there that you couldnโt see. Nothing and nobody was lonely.
My new place has a cute little patio but I doubt it could fit that television let alone the hot tub or the gigantic pool you displayed earlier.
Nice. You need something like this and some chairs.
Yep mine is recessed from the 3 or 4 neighbors for a nice bit of privacy but when I lean out I can see they all have the requisite patio furniture – chairs, umbrella tables, and such. I’ve been here less than a week so there’s time to catch up. Plus it has been heavy rain a lot of the time.
You can make that pretty cosy.
I’ve never had my own little outdoors before. Not quite sure what to do with it. I have been told that cooking out there is verboten but a little R&R might be nice. There are no balconies on the 3 or so floors above me so some protection for my pale skin is going to be crucial.
I have a gas grill on my terrace. Squirrels ate the hoses three times already. So I gave up. Maybe I should get put some seating there?
No wildlife yet except some crickets.
I love not facing the street and a bunch of mentally ill drug addicts. Though to be fair the streets are not crawling with that here, unlike where I was.

Yeah, a chair with an umbrella thing? Especially a slightly lean-backy chair + small table of appropriate height.
*big thumbs up*
Tater:
They sell these to deal with squirrels

Thanks, I should look into those. I would need three (it has a side burner) and most of them seem to short.
What should I get to keep squirrels from eating my comments?
Noice!
Fancy!
I don’t see any alien wimminz.
The guy playing Saggs is a bummer right from the jump.
THis does look better than I recall.

That’s just weird. Wilson was great?

Everyone gave up trying to post?
Got a haircut today. Asked for high fade, got a high and tight. Goddamit.
That is way too fussy for me. I just buzz all over. But I haven’t paid for a haircut in decades so there is that.
SE Asian ladies. $14 haircut. I’ve gone back to having it done after cutting my own for several years.
I’ll get mine cut Sunday in the privacy of the privy by my alter ego.
Cheapest barber around but I get what I pay for
In NYC the good barbers were historically Italians – now it seems they’re all Uzbeks or similar Stanis.
Me, I just buzz very short for comfort. I don’t give a shit what I look like – more important is less sweating.
2 weeks between a bad haircut and the next bad one
I think my last haircut was in 2010. About a month before I etsd.
The last time I shaved was to collect my ETS award the drill after I left. That was over twenty years ago. Time flies.
Fully shaved. I do trim the facial hair so my wife doesn’t kick me out.
I run an electric razor across my face every morning. Creature of habit.
Charles Dance: “If I had an anus, I’d probably soil myself.”
Heh. That was funny.
I have to say those special effects were great. I felt the agony of not getting a theater release.
The kung fu robot was very good.
Started prepping for my interview on Monday. I would be rather surprised if I didn’t get it, to start. But hopefully the job is a) easier(?) than the last one b) they take more than ten days to train me on it c) everything works out. That bird ain’t in hand yet, but I’m treating this as a proper weekend.
I’ll hopefully get $20/$21 for it. That would be rather nice, but escrow processing also did, and that didn’t work (for reasons I don’t think really involved me). It was a profitable July at least, and August looks like it’s perking up.
The 6yo is ‘graduating’ up a level in karate tomorrow. That will be quite an enjoyable spectacle. Oooh! Speaking of, lunar eclipse tonight. It’s started, technically. 12:12 at peak time, so I’ll be checking in on it every once in a while.
I really hope the best for you my boy. And I hope this is the job that sticks.
*fist bump explosion fingers*
Let’s say it goes well: I’d likely feel confident about getting my own place in about 3mo, but I wouldn’t do anything for six. That would be fairly transformative. I guess I briefly had a place in Kokomo when with the Tribune, but that didn’t go well. (Many reasons, a woman being one of them.) But that was three years ago and much has changed. (Tho not with her. She’s still very nuts.)
My actually in my own place in America? Wowza. Still, finding actual people in something resembling a ‘social network’ will remain its own challenge. Living in ’50s Mayberry makes more sense for our species than modernity.
*fingers crossed to all*
I am not a
n animalrobot!I would watch Charles Dance in almost anything. Especially if he is a bad guy.
Favorite line: (from a different movie) You were not put on this earth to ‘get it’.
Thanks for the Link and the reminder.
You are very welcome. This is our home, we do occasionally have to keep it up.
Speaking of Lovecraft and Barbara Crampton, we ever do From Beyond?
Also the Deep Ones keep eating my comments.
Iโm still waiting to see The Last Lovecraft: Relic of Cthulhu to be featuredโฆ
Don’t think I’ve ever seen that one.

I will make sure those are on the list
Sweet: We are going to pick up our Golden Retriever puppy tomorrow. I finally got a day off.
Bittersweet: My nephew died in his sleep last night. He was 1.5 years old and was born with heart issues. He had been under the surgeon’s knife twice already. My sister, her husband, my mother, and my step-dad are all devestated.
I only met him once at Easter. I didn’t get to teach him to shoot guns, chase loose women, run a chainsaw, butcher a chicken, make bacon, or ride a motorcycle. RIP Baby Ashton.
Woah. Deepest condolences.
RIP Baby Ashton.
Sorry ๐
My condolences for your nephew.
That’s so sad.
My condolences.
Rest in peace.
Speaking of space-time anomalies, I am posting from PDT.
The eclipse is fun. A bright chip of it, and some rosy glow to the rest of the moon. I’ll check it out again in an hour. I suspect the red might be brighter.
Once people way way way way long ago in pre-civilization huts, figured the timing of… Wait. I’m guessing much better homes than ‘huts’ would be necessary to have the time, resources to research astronomy. Like wealthy Egyptian, nice, to have the time to figure out how to anticipate eclipses/etc. Anyhoo: Easy to see how that led to religions and power, etc. I’d love to be in the conversation when they talked about how to market that.
*searches* “In fact, surviving records from ancient Egypt contain remarkably little explicit mention of solar or lunar eclipses at all.”
Okay, fine. Greek huts. *angry-scrunch face*
The Antikythera mechanism could predict lunar eclipses:
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Antikythera_mechanism
Some time ago I downloaded an excellent YouTube video of an analysis and reconstruction of the AM. I can’t find it now. The amount of AI slop about everything on YouTube is disappointing.
I too saw the eclipse but poorly. I woke up at 1am, past the peak, and went outside fo a peek. I figure 40% occultation when the clouds weren’t doing 100% occultation. Then I spent an hour pretending I was going to go back to sleep. I spent a few lazy hours and decided to see if anyone else was up. The last time I tried this was a Sunday morning and I had the whole site to myself.
BTW I’ve had no issues with WordPress other than the annoyance of proving I’m a not a robot when accessing the site with the cookies cleared. This is with Comcast at my office and a wireless hotspot at my cabin, both computers running Linux/Firefox with uBlock Origin installed. Of course I seldom comment so I may be avoiding all of the abuse.
I once wrote an article on how I download video from the Internet:
https://www.glibertarians.com/2025/01/how-to-download-video-from-the-internet/
I still use those techniques but for YouTube videos I find the free 4K Video Download Plus program much more convenient:
https://www.4kdownload.com/products/videodownloader-42
It usually works. Sometimes YouTube tightens its anti-downloading technology and it stops working. Downloading the latest version of 4KVDP usually fixes the problem. Sometimes it takes a day or two for a new version to come out.
I use that one too – best I have found. And yeah, you have to keep it up to date.
Any recommendations for Blu-ray Disc rippers? I use an older (pre-subscription) version of Ac Video Ripper Pro (MVRP) on my older iMac for DVDs, but it would be nice to be able to rip Blu-ray Discs…
I’ve been using MakeMKV to do that. It’s worked in both windows and Linux, haven’t tried it on the Mac. I would need a usb extension cord to connect my external Bluray drive to the MacMini to try it.
A few weeks ago I upgraded my AT&T cell phone. (I have AT&T and Verizon phones because you never know which carrier works where in Vermont.) One app I’ve had installed for years is Opensignal:
https://www.opensignal.com/apps#section-os-app
Which I use occasionally for speed tests. This morning when I turned on the AT&T cell phone I got an notification it used 2GB of data. In the process of trying to turn off that notification I discovered the Opensignal app used 776MB of data. I ran a few speed tests when I got the phone but I don’t think I ran 776MB worth. Searching for an answer as to why produces nothing but Opensignal propaganda. I’m going to delete the app.
Well that’s it from me this fine morning. I wish my loquaciousness was more aligned with the rest of the commentariat. Have a good Friday and a great weekend!

Good morning, Sean, Richard, U, Roat, Ted’S., and homey!

How are you today, U?
I’m awake.
I made it to the office.
This tireness had better not mean I’m coming down with something.
๐ I hope not!
How are things with you?
OK, but I’m a bit frustrated. The selection of Atkins frozen meals at my grocery has shrunk to the point that there’s only really one I like, so I started picking up some salads for my lunches at work. Now the headlines keep screaming that all lettuce everywhere is liable to kill you. ๐

State of the art…
I’m so sorry.
Sorry is yesterday morning’s post.
Good Morning to each and everyone, individually and collectively.
Over the past unremembered number of years, my travel radius has continued to shrink. I used to be on the road, a young, carefree Fourscore, driving hither and yon. More recently a drive to Walmart (30 miles) is about as far as I dare to go before the body begins its conversation, telling me its time to get back home.
