I first spotted her on the bus home as it dragged and bumped along a blighted stretch of New England. She had the Innsmouth look about her, easy to spot if your route took you through the shabby little port town, with its sagging roofs and rotting pier. I had looked up from my book of ancient history, the battle and glories of Rome, when she got on, but she was wearing a hooded cloak and it wasn’t until she threw it back I saw her deformities–the eyes, the faint line of gills on her neck, a fishy whiff of low tide… She was from Innsmouth, there was no doubt.
“She is one?” my travelling companion Jonathan asked quietly, leaning in so close I could feel his hot breath in my ear. He had gotten on the decrepit bus from the valley and we became fast friends once we realized we had both attended colleges along the route. He was going all the way up to Maine, home he said, a dreary-sounding place called Stonington. I have never been to Maine; too close to Canada, I told him. He had laughed at my old, old joke. When he asked about the sights on the way, I told him about the curiosity that was Innsmouth and the abominations that arose there, attempting to dispel the myths that had grown around the place in popular entertainments.
“Yes,” I said, “she is one of them.”
“Why are they allowed to leave the reservation?” Jonathan asked, appalled to be in such close quarters with a bastard spawn of The Deep Ones.
“They can venture out to work in a limited number of jobs to bring outside money in. Innsmouth is very poor since the government submarine torpedoed the reef decades ago.”
At mention of Innsmouth, she turned to stare at us, bulging eyes milky from vestigial nictitating membranes. She gurgled to herself and turned away. This wouldn’t have been the first time people had noticed her strangeness and mongrel blood.
“They need the money to keep up the town and buy the foodstuffs they cannot take from the sea,” I said in a very low voice, “as recompense for the humans they had killed over the years to feed The Deep Ones, all their alien gold was seized.”
“The smell,” Jonathan said, “it is too much for me.” By silent mutual consent, we moved to the seats in the very back of the nearly empty bus. She turned to glare at us again and Jonathan shivered after he took his seat.
“Do they all look as hideous as her?”
“No,” I said, “many are much, much worse, some unable to leave the house because even the feeble sun of winter can cause their skin to bubble and burst. Others have to live in the sea but for brief forays on land. Some not even that.”
“Why do we even suffer them to live?”
“They did something for the country during the war–no one knows exactly what–and they were allowed their own enclave.”
“Disgusting.”
“They are an entire field of research at my college,” I said, unconsciously brushing the Miskatonic University library staff pin on my lapel. “We even have records of a dissection of a dead Deep One dredged up from the ruin of the reef after demolition.”
In the sluggish time of the bus, we finally reached Innsmouth. The decayed town looked ripe for a plague to tear through it, but–in a sense–one already had. The stooped woman got off the bus when it stopped, a webbed hand on the door to steady herself.
“Look,” Jonathan said, pointing at a small creature waiting at the dark stop. “What is it?”
“A child, a child of Innsmouth,” I told him.
He shuddered and gagged briefly. “They let them breed?” he asked as the two hybrids shuffled away.
“Some have intercouse,” I said, “but most lay thousands of eggs to be fertilized by a male.”
Jonathan tore open a window at that and vomited, the small dark things of Innsmouth scurrying forth to lap it up as the bus lurched back to its route.

Regardless, the ‘dynComments’ cookie defaults to 0 (off), so I strongly suspect you’re having cookies cleared (maybe a default Mull setting?).
Since the comment-count-refresh does a back-off when there are no new comments (only checking every 5 1/3rd minutes when no new comments are found), I think that making that on by default would be reasonable.
It won’t help with other settings if your cookings are getting dropped, but it’ll help with this one issue at least…

Thanks for my ‘full reveal’ of my damage, yesterday. Not the easiest thing to write, but I hope it was as lighthearted as possible, and am happy that’s how it naturally came out. Was going for ‘reality,’ but with piss jugs and escape quests instead of anything sappy. An oddity I’m not sure how to address: I’m not sure if looking 99% okay, and ‘being’ (uh?) 90%(?) physically okay is part of that blessing. It really is, and I know it cuz everything could be much worse. (It’s really fairly good, considering.) But it’s tricky ‘looking’ okay but actually really not ‘being’ okay. I don’t know if it would be better /easier to have a ‘special card’ to hand out to employers to sort of let ’em know not all my failings are because I’m dumb or lazy. (Meh. I could also be dead. So, I will take the massive victory I’ve earned.) Not sure how to even think about that, cuz I’m not in the business of casually letting folk know I’m kinda fucked.
Woke up after tons of rest but felt a bit wonky, so I slept some more. Cubs going for the sweet of LA at Wrigley, and Ohtani cranks a leadoff homer off Imanaga. Yay. Well. You care out districts based on race alone no matter how unnatural. You have to lump people together regardless of any other criteria to hit a certain threshold of a certain minority in a district. A big horizontal district stretching across an entire state that includes rural and urban areas and everything in between to try and hit it.
The entire premise of doing this is that all black people have their own set of interests based on skin color that can only be represented by other people with their skin color. Which is itself repugnant, but the flipside of it is that other groups may see things the same way and will usually not choose someone of that skin color for that very same reason.
It’s all grounded in repugnant identity politics that need to die a quick, yet painful death.
