Based on responses last time, it looks like people are more interested in some theory than some terminology, so let’s get going with some basic ratios that will let you make your own drinks, be they mixed drinks or cocktails.

Cocktails 102 – Classic forgotten cocktails

We went over the definition of a cocktail last week, next step is to simplify it down to three things that you want in balance: Sweet, Bitter, Strong.  Sweet and bitter refer to three of the items we discussed last week (Sugar, Water, Bitters).  Strong simply refers to a spirit of ~40% ABV (80 proof).  So you’ve got your bottles of bitters, your flavored simple syrups you made, and several bottles of liquor that you like.  Where do you go next?
